This is one of our go to spots for good pizza near by our place. Whether it's a party we host or just a lazy dinner cause we don't feel like cooking, Mario's never disappoints. Their pizza is delish and love the crust. My partner loves their marinara sauce! I've been wanting to try more of their specialty pizza, like their Bianco or spicy buffalo chicken. We also grabbed garlic knots and their onion rings on the side, too. The garlic knots were pretty good but it was lacking more garlic to our liking. As well as the onions they're delish! I've never been to any Mario's location but let me tell you, the Hanes Mall Blvd location did not disappoint! I got the Tuesday Calzone special and my add in choice was the crumbled sausage. The sausage pieces were big, juicy and slightly spicy, the cheese combo of mozzarella and ricotta was out of this world. The crispy, baked to perfection dough was LOADED. There was no hollow space, it was full of deliciousness. I took half home and it reheated in my toaster oven really well and was just as tasty. It came with a side of marinara and it was heated. I'm always surprised when a restaurant gives you marinara right out of the refrigerator. Ick! My sister got the steak and cheese and she said it was also delicious. I have never been to a Marios (discovered it is a local chain). There is a place in the resturaunt landscape for places like Mario's, strip malls is just about right. This one is in a bustling stretch of stores along what passes for a busy road in nice little Winston-Salem. The ordering was the first note of concern. The young man working the register (who should usually be the QB of the shift, was more likely a rookie long snapper). The poor lilttle fellow had challeneges communicating, and definetly difficulty relating back what was being said to him. My wife got an italian sub, onion rings, and a drink. The managers special is a sub, a side and a drink. What actually happened was two seperate transaction and us spending $3 more than what should have happened. I ordered a chef salad (this is important later, hang in there) with Ceasar dressing. I also got a slice of "NY style" pizza. The slice was huge, which should be a good thing, but actually in this case, not its best feature. My wife said the sub was "edible", nothing memorable about a lunch meat sandwich on a generic roll. That is not the best praise for a $9 sub. My pizza was NY in the same way that I am Charles Barkley "style", I am tall, brown, bald and have a bit of a belly. The slice was bland, cheese got gummy and the wrong kind of stretchy by the time I finished the slice. The crust texture got worse with each bite was well. I reached into the bag for the salad figuring that would redeem the meal. To my dismay...a plastic container full of romaine, croutons, and parmesan slivers. In MD we call that a Ceasar salad. So chef became ceasar because of the dressing...long snapper stikes again. This place clearly strikes a chord with the local population they serve. That is good for them, I wish the chain and this location success. They will have to do so without our participation. I don't mind a $30 lunch for two, used to it, that's about normal these days. However that price point, the average food, and the mistakes/ordering chaos make it hard for me to think I would ever allow myself risk this place again. We were in town for Army vs. Wake, this was easily the most disappointing meal of the weekend trip. read more

The appetizers we had jalapeño poppers and fried mushrooms were tasty and the ranch dressing dip was tasty as well. The 10 inch pizza is enough for two people. So glad Mario's is right near my work! Their pizza is AMAZING! They have the thin crispy NY style crust... The kind you can fold in half and eat like a real New Yorker. When I saw this saying "authentic NY style pizza," I had my reservations. First off, lots of people claim to have this in the South but it doesn't measure up. Second, I live in NYC, have a spouse & in-laws who are Italian and have had plenty of authentic Italian food. While I'm not the pizza connoisseur my spouse is, I have been able to taste the difference in foods prepared by Southerners vs. NY Italians despite growing up in this area of NC. Anyhow, decided I'd try it for the Yelp review and while I always have reservations when anyone claims something is "authentic" for an area their restaurant is not located it, this place wasn't bad at all. They had garlic knots on the menu (a delicacy I've only seen in NYC & Long Island) and the cannoli was consistent with what I've had in my region. My slice was also good & standard with the size of a NY slice, though a tad pricier than what I've had in parts of Manhattan (nearly $3.00 for a slice of cheese). Overall, if you miss NY style pizza & cuisine, I've found this place wasn't a bad substitute. In closing, let me state for any local residents that the definitive BEST NY style pizza is & always will be in NY. End of story. read more

The slice is gigantic and has the crispy crust and great cheese and sauce flavor of a true NY slice. The salad was ok, iceberg lettuce with some onion and peppers.
