I had a great shave from Jason. It was fantastic. I 1st meet Jason when I was in Italy getting a shave from a master barber. He was there on a apprentice learning from the best. On my vacation to Chicage I decited to let Jason give me a shave and I was so happy I did. And he is a nice guy as well.!!! read more

My husband recently underwent a total knee replacement, a process that kept him in the hospital for a week before he moved to the rehabilitation facility across the street from Mario's for an additional week. Upon his discharge, he was looking quite shaggy and certainly required a bit of tender loving care to regain his groomed good looks. I arranged an appointment for him with Jason, and my eighty-five-year-old husband remarked that it was one of the finest haircuts he has ever received. He also experienced his first professional straight razor shave, which he thoroughly enjoyed. It was, in every respect, a job well done. read more

Mario's is the best barber shop on the north side. I say this after shopping around for a year. Easy-going and gifted barbers. Ask Jason for a straight razor shave while you're there. read more

I've been a consistent regular at Mario's, despite moving to the suburbs, for the last 10 years. Mario, Mike, and Jason are top notch professionals that provide the best haircut, hot lather shave, and service I've gotten since relocating to the Midwest. I cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

Moved to the area recently, and after a few bad haircuts elsewhere, I think I found my new shop! Jason was great, he took me as a walk-in, and cleaned up the mess the last shop left nicely. They are cash only and there was a hiccup with the atm, but Jason let me leave and come back to pay with no fuss which felt trustworthy/ high character. I'll be back in a month or two. read more

I have been going to Mario's since I was 10 years old and will continue going here for my haircuts as long as I continue living in the city. Old school barber shop that has an atmosphere that can't be replicated anywhere else. Mario, Mike, Jason, and Jack are a great group of guys who give excellent haircuts, straight razor shaves, and conversations. Always excited to come here for some laughs, watch some tv, have a drink and a good time. read more

First time here, I had no idea this place was in the neighborhood even though I've lived here 18 years. Will definitely come back, good cut and nice people. read more

Nice guys, terrible haircut. Stopped by last week to get a haircut. They seem like great guys, and the location is clean and has a fun vibe. But the haircut Mario gave me is completely inexcusable. Missed all sorts of spots (badly), the lines were jagged, and my face and neck were covered in patches of hair he missed. I had to go somewhere different to get it fixed today. I hate saying this: I'm sure Mario was good at one point, but he prolly needs to give his chair to a younger guy. Or get his eyes checked. Go somewhere else. read more

All of these guys do a top-notch job at cutting hair. Super fun place to hang out--always got a movie playing and you can hangout and have a pop or a brewski while you wait. This is the spot. read more

I had a great buzzcut, for a reasonable price. My guy (the Texan) was excellent at lining up my beard as well. 10/10 would recommend.

called to ask if they had time for a walk in ( as they're sign advertising walk-ins welcome ) guy said no bluntly like they're swamped with customers I drove by and one guy was in a chair that's all . guess they must be making a killing in only cutting by appointments cause from what these reviews say seems like they can't cutt hair good hair so i dodged a bullet lol . read more

Great guys clean shop but horrible cut I am sorry to say this but I had to go to another barber the next day to fix my hair. There were uneven cut all around with long and short hairs sticking out everywhere paid $40 for cut but cost me another $30 the next to get it fixed. read more

I asked for a simple bald fade. I kid you not that I went in looking better than I came coming out. Not only was I robbed of $40 I also lost my pride and dignity. I am lucky that I have a beautiful girlfriend because If I was single I wouldn't be able to pick up women with this look. Not only would they be frightened but they would probably call 9-1-1 for their safety. Coming from Miami where every single barber is decent I did not expect this atrocity. This store needs help. So does my hair. I not only was robbed of $40 but now have to spend another $65 to get a haircut fixed so that I look somewhat presentable and people are not calling the police on me. 0/10 would not recommend. read more

Great haircut. Mario, Jason, and Mike are all great guys. Overall 5/5 experience and would highly recommend.

Mario's is the best. Mario, Jason and Mike are talented barbers, friendly guys and great neighbors. This place is as old school as it gets... and as good as it gets. So glad I found it when I moved to Lincoln Park. read more

30 years of haircuts and not going anywhere else! Glad Big M is back, and his small family style ran business is unmatchable in the city. Always friendly, always talkative and a great place to grab a haircut while chatting. This place will always remind me of old school barber shops, good cuts, good talks, good people, good prices. Keep it up Mario & his crew! I'll be back for another 30+ years! read more

Love this place. Old school felling and incredibly cool atmosphere at the place. The staff is knowledgable and doa. great job cutting hair. Might've found a spot to come back to over and over again. read more

Mario's barbershop is the best I've been to since living in Chicago 5+ years. I am so happy I finally found these professionals who know how to work with my different hair. I don't need anything special and they understand how to do a men's haircut the right way. read more

Great barbershop. I recommend this to all guys. Not overpriced like those prissy salons. A true man's place to get a cut, have a beer and talk... Oh, and to get a good cut. With a great atmosphere and nice people, this is how businesses should be run. read more

Great haircut, a reasonable price for the city, service was good. Just don't care for the Playboys

I've been a long time fan of going to salons to get my hair cut. I just assumed that if it was women that I was trying to impress, then it should be a woman that cuts my hair. The only problem is that I started feeling like a woman when I walked into a salon. For the longest time I would only let one person cut my hair. Occasionally I would cheat on her if her chair was full and it was an emergency, but not too often. Since I moved to the city, I grew my hair out pretty long while passively trying to figure out what I was going to do about getting it cut. Luckily, one of my friends suggested this place. He made me an appointment, which I hear is a must, and talked it up quite a bit. I was expecting a lot, and I would have to say, Mario delivered. Decent place, good location, beer, good conversation, straight blade shave, what more does a guy need to take care of his head once a month? I will certainly be a return customer. . read more

I've been going here for 15 years. Great barbershop vibe. Simple. No pretenses. Great haircut every time.

This is a great neighborhood barber shop - tailor made for dudes. Chilly PBR in the fridge (help yourself!), Sopranos or college ball on the big screen, neighborhood denizens popping in to bust some balls, and plenty of gratuitous cussing. The haircut? Oh yeah...you can get one of those, too. Pleasant, comfortable atmosphere, nice attention to detail with the scissors, and a close neck shave to send you off looking your dapper best. Definitely recommend Mario's. read more

Great local barber......If you like gel and shop on Armitage you probably won't like this place....If you want an old school experience like you dad come here and watch the TV and have a drink in a great place with a great guy running it. Precision haircuts, affable barbers, and an awesome vibe. My son and I went to Mario's Place religiously for ten years, but since moving away from Chicago we must settle for seeing Mario, Mike and Jason only when we make it back to the city. If you live in Chicago, you owe it to yourself to get your hair cut at Mario's. They're such great guys, they can even be nice to Cubs fans. read more

Everything I look for in a barber shop. *Great prices *old school neighborhood barber feel *friendly people *cold beer *good conversation *quality haircut/shave Lloyd cut my hair and did good. I just needed a trim around the ears etc. so nothing special but was still good. We talked chicago sports and about new orleans the entire time (lloyd goes to new orleans twice a year and I just moved back to chicago from new orleans after 10 years there). This is not a wannabe throwback barber shop, this IS an authentic throwback barbershop! read more

I have been here twice. The first time because the wait at my usual place was long, I gave up and happened to drive by it on my way to work and figured it was worth a shot. The younger guy, the owner's son, who I think is named Mike, cut my hair and did a great job. So much so that even though I live between Lakeview and North Center, the next time I needed a hair cut, I went out of my way to go here. Walked in and was taken care of right away, this time by Lloyd. Lloyd asked me what I wanted, and I specifically said, "number 3 on the sides, clean up the top, but leave it long." He asked how I wear it, if I like it spikey, etc., I said "No, I usually wear it either slicked straight back, or slicked forward and up in the front." He said, "Okay" and got started. He took about an inch off the top of my hair, and then at the end, when he put product in it, spiked it up. It was very strange, because he asked a lot of follow up questions, seemingly to figure out exactly what I wanted, and then went ahead and ignored everything I said. The only reasons this is not a 1 star review: -I was so impressed by my first visit -Despite not being at all what I wanted, the haircut actually looks good. The lines are clean, and it was well done. -It's hard to find a good, old fashioned barber shop like this: reasonably priced, use a straight razor (and use it well, unlike Rudy's, Floyd's, and the other new wave hipster barbers) I will probably go back, but call ahead and request Mike if I have a particular style in mind. That being said, if you're not sure what you want done to your hair, Lloyd gives a fantastic haircut, just don't expect him to follow your directions. read more

I've been getting my hair cut at Mario's for about 4 years now and it's always a bright spot in my month. Everything you want in a real honest neighborhood barber shop. Very solid, I've been to State Street Barbers (avoid) and others and Mario's is the best cut and value in Lincoln Park in my opinionl.. 5-stars if you have Mario himself cut your hair. 6-stars if you do that and have a free PBR. read more

When I first moved to Chicago I had a hard time finding a decent place to get my hair cut that was not a salon. I was under the impression that barbershops would not be hard to find in the city of Chicago. Man, was I dead wrong! It seems as though the barber is a dying profession and stylists have taken over. I event went to State Street Barber Shop only to find out the place was a salon disguised as a barbershop. What a crock! Mario's is a great place to get a haircut. You walk in and they offer you a beer while you wait and you can either watch the plasma TV or flip through the multitude of magazines. Now that's luxury! Ive always had great experiences there and have been going there for over two years. I would definitely recommend the Mario's Barber Shop experience for anyone in the Chicago area. It would also be in your best interest to make an appointment before going since they do get busy. read more

Fantastic service, great atmosphere and the conversation with staff is always enjoyable. I'd highly recommend.

I got a haircut here once and never again. I pretty much wanted to avoid a buzz cut and he gave a me a haircut so short that it basically looked like a buzz. Then he said "Oh that is what you wanted" when I described how I wanted my hair to stick up when he realized he messed up. He also didn't care about the sensitivity and it was more painful than most when he was cutting my hair. Then the worst part? I thought this place took credit cards and then he ended up saying "Cash only." Maybe my barber was just an idiot as there is a lot more but I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

Decent place, but its hard to get in without an appointment. Three real nice barbers and a cheery atmosphere. The barber named, Bob seems to get his balls busted by the other two throughout day. You can tell it agitates him, making him fidgety and nervous. If he happens to be cutting your hair at the time, there will be an interesting outcome. read more

I have seen 3 of the 4 barbers here and have gotten consistent, excellent cuts from all of them. I had been going to a very busy shop in Lakeview for a number of years but started feeling that they were resting on their laurels and getting sloppy with their cuts. It was too much of an assembly line and they weren't taking their time to make sure they got it right. I have had the opposite experience at Mario's. I also like that I can make an appointment here (they do take walk ins of course too) which was not an option at the other place. Prices are on par with other spots. Great place to have in the neighborhood. Highly recommended. They recently stopped taking credit cards which, as a small business owner myself, I completely understand. Make sure to bring cash. read more
