Receptionists need improvement! In my opinion, from my…read moreexperience, the Marion IL branch of Central Animal hospital had little to no regard to my dog's welfare. I arrived 5 minutes before my dog's scheduled appointment. I left my 18.5 year old dog relaxing in my air conditioned car to find out if they were on schedule. They said yes. I brought my 18.5 year old dog into their not very well air conditioned, slippery floor lobby. Waited 10 min past my appointment time as I watched my dog getting more stressed and having more difficulty managing their lobby floor. I then asked "I thought we were on schedule, how much longer am I to wait?" The receptionist said yes you are on schedule but we are behind on appointments. I ask "well how long do we have to wait?" The receptionist left the lobby for a couple minutes to find out then came back to apologize, saying they just had a euthanasia, and some other stuff and are behind AND they could NOT tell me how long I was to wait. I get it that stuff comes up and schedules get pushed back HOWEVER, they should know-ish how long my 18.5 year old dog would need to wait before and after the receptionist went in back to consult with whomever. They should be pro-active on rescheduling or setting wait time expectations. It seems they think it is ok to let 18.5 year old patients wait indefinitely, getting stressed in their waiting room. Very disappointing on the total lack of proactiveness and concern that was shown to me and my dog.

After trying to save money by going to some of the more inexpensive clinics in the region, I learned not to risk my pet's life to save money. Though on the pricey side, Pet Wellness Center is, in my book, the best veterinary clinic in Marion, and possibly in the region. Dr. Smith and his staff are warm and personable. The office manager, Kathy, succeeds in giving the place its welcoming atmosphere--her cute, friendly personality shines through as she drops whatever she's doing to greet the pets and chat with the owners. The vet techs (especially Melissa), and the rest of the support staff are patient, and eager to answer any questions. The office is immaculately clean, very modern-looking, and they sell a variety of foods, grooming tools, and leashes. Yes, you'll spend more than you would at Wal-mart or PetCo, but I think it's important to support this country's small businesses. I should mention that they also offer boarding for cats and dogs, and at a very low nightly rate. The area where the dogs are walked is kept well-manicured and clean. I live in Chicago now, but I'm planning to take my dog with me all the way to Marion in a couple of months, just to get his shots and groomed here.

What followed was a $2,000+ masterclass in medical incompetence, poor surgical technique, and total disorganization across 4 visits resulting in zero answers. -The Initial Drop-the-Ball: We brought her in for a swollen, irritated, hairless mass. They diagnosed a "breaking down tumor," told us to give her Benadryl, and performed a fine-needle aspirate (FNA)--releasing her without a cone or a protective dressing. They promised to call the next day with the dry slide results. They never called. -The Necrotic Fallout: 48 hours later, with still zero communication from the clinic, the spot rapidly deteriorated into a necrotic, rotting abscess with tissue sloughing off. We rushed her back for an emergency surgery to remove it, during which they pushed a $400 histopathology report to figure out what was happening. (Funny enough, they still hadn't looked at the original FNA results until we were standing there). -Abysmal Surgical Quality: The lumpectomy cost roughly 150% more than the area average, and the execution was shocking. They closed a massive 5-inch incision on a large breed dog with only 6 stitches. Unsurprisingly, the wound repeatedly broke open and leaked. The closure was so poorly done that her stitch-removal appointment had to be delayed an additional week because the wound was still gaping open--yet they still tried to bill us for a $40 tube of antibiotic ointment to clean up their own shoddy work. -The "Clown Show" Finale: At her rescheduled stitch-removal appointment, we checked in only to be left sitting in an exam room for over 45 minutes before a tech finally walked in, completely unaware we were even there. When we asked for the $400 histopathology report, the staff took another 10+ minutes just trying to figure out how to print or email it to us. Bottom line: $2,000+ spent, a miserable weeks-long healing ordeal for our dog due to grossly inadequate surgical spacing, and zero definitive answers. Save your time, your money, your sanity, and--most importantly--avoid this place with your fur babies at all costs.

Couldn't find a better clinic or nicer, more knowledgeable vets! My daughter's dog (great…read morePyrenees) got a broken leg while she was in the area going to school. We didn't know where to go but ended up at the main Herrin office. Dr. Rhine and his son were WONDERFUL! When we arrived, two techs came out and carried the dog into an exam room. They made sure she was as comfortable as possible and called Dr. Rhine because it was really before they were even supposed to be open. Dr. Rhine came right away and explained all the options, showed us the X-Rays, and did surgery that same day. He and his son went out of their way to help make sure the surgery was done right, and Dr. Rhine's 45 years of experience was so comforting. When he explained something, you could really tell he knew what he was talking about. On day one after the surgery, the dog had no swelling at all and could put some weight on her leg. The tech who took care of post-op was so kind and helpful. I know the dog was in good hands even over night. When she was ready to be released, we got detailed instructions and have been able to call and have our questions answered since. The clinic even got her in without an appointment for a re-bandage when she chewed the dressings off :) They have kept us informed every step of the way. I don't think you could find more compassionate care anywhere, even at our home vet. I highly recommend Dr. Rhine, his son, and this facility. We didn't use the boarding facility, but it looks very clean, modern, and nice, just like the clinic and surgery unit itself. With such a great vet and clinic right across the parking lot, it is hard for me to believe anyone has had a bad experience there, but if they did, it must have been a fluke, because we had nothing but good experiences. I wish the dog hadn't broken her leg, but it was really such a blessing to find Dr. Rhine and have his expertise. I don't know what we would have done without him!

The two people that come to mind immediately are the Vet Tec, Brooke, and Dr. Collin Rhine. Their compassion over the years was spectacular and when we had to put our dog, Rocky, down, they were so supportive. Brooke took a liking to Rocky very early on and would always light up when we brought him in. She cried with my wife when we had to put him down, and to me that's a reflection of who she is, kind and compassionate. Dr. Collin always gave us hope when we needed hope but honesty when it was time to say goodbye. We had no doubt he did everything he could to help our little guy out, by far the best veterinarian our Rocky had the privilege of seeing in his nearly 18 years of life. If you're looking for place to take your animals where they truly care about them, go to Central Hospital For Animals - Herrin.

A pre-op exam was done by Dr. Cressey, who found her fit and healthy. Surgery was performed 5 days later on a Tuesday. Alice initially appeared to recover normally, but by the following Sunday she refused food and became lethargic. As Striegel was closed, we took Alice to Lakeside Veterinary Hospital in Carbondale IL., where they determined that she was dehydrated and that her stitches had opened. Bloodwork indicated a low white blood cell count. The wound was cleaned, she was given fluids and anti-nausea meds. She was prescribed an antibiotic to be given only if she ate. We were advised to return to Striegel for follow-up. She would not eat and so we returned to Striegel the next day, Monday. Dr. Cressey examined her at length and said the extraction site was fine despite the missing stitches. Although blood test results were borderline, Dr. Cressey diagnosed pancreatitis based on abdominal sensitivity. We were told that simple anxiety could sometimes trigger such symptoms in a dog. Alice was again given fluids along with pain meds and an appetite stimulant. We we're instructed to feed her as best we could but not to administer the antibiotic unless she ate. We were not provided with an emergency telephone number or any recourse to after-hours immediate care. In the middle of the night, Alice's breathing became labored and she began to cry. We did our best to apply pain medication. At two-thirty on that Tuesday morning, as we drove toward the only 24-hour clinic we could find, two hours away near St. Louis, Alice died in my wife's arms. Three weeks later, I can still hear my wife crying as I write this. A necropsy was performed at the U of I Veterinary school but results were inconclusive. Striegel called to inform us that the invoice for that necropsy was ready a week before the report was returned. Like other doctors, veterinarians swear an oath upon graduation: primum non nocere, first do no harm. Striegel did irrevocable harm to our Alice, deep and lasting harm to me and my wife. They did not provide the thorough, responsible care and follow-up we were promised and dutifully paid for. Alice was our best friend and constant companion. If you care for your pet as much as we did for her, you would be well advised to look elsewhere for a good veterinarian.
