Well first off I went in for a exam for a personal eye issue and the lady at the desk checked me in had said have a seat it's on the right and when I got to the waiting area it was on the left anyway I sat down because I was like surely this is where I sit I waited another 38 minutes just to hear the receptionist back there say okay doctor this is your last patient and that was not me that's when I stood up and I said have you called my name at all I've been sitting here for 38 minutes needless to say they made me another appointment way off and it's a really important appointment and I needed it ASAP so I'm going to go elsewhere this is the second time and the first time was about 5 or 6 years ago ridiculous some things never change I guess read more

The puppy mill of eye places. Used to be better. Techs are nice and work efficiently, but now they just dilate you eyes without even asking, and then they can't/wont do an actual lens exam to check your eyeglass prescription (at least last year the techs noticed they did not do that, and asked if I wanted to come back for the vision exam, but this year just said I was "fine" after I read lines on the eye chart). I had trouble with reading lines on one of the exams, and when the doc came in I asked him why I was not able to read anything but the highest line when I had to read through this eye cup with a small aperture - he just said I was "fine except oh you have a small cataract, but its fine." And then he left. He was in for all of 3 minutes. And this is after I had to reschedule, and the earliest appointment was 3 months out "because the doctor only comes in once a month." Maybe if they worked more than once a month you could actually get the doctor to talk to you instead of the doctors blasting through the appointment in 3 minutes flat and not listening to anything you ask, or explaining anything they do. I guess a real vision exam is too much trouble for them - they've just winnowed it down to the least they can do to not get sued for negligence, I guess. I don't think I'll be back. read more

I have been going to them for over 20 years. The service is not bad, until you get to the phase of actually buying glasses. I guess these places no longer have actual opticians, just people that put your glasses in a case and send you on your way. They offer absolutely no help in selecting a frame that actually fits you. Not a single measurement has ever been taken. Once they arrive, and you go in to pick them up, there's still no attempt to fit you or adjust them. The last pair I got from them fit so poorly that I had to take them back and ask for assistance in fitting and adjusting them. The lady waiting on me begrudgingly made a half hearted attempt at it and gave up, sending me on my way. This is not the kind of service I have received anywhere else in the entire country in the past. It seems as if these "opticians" have absolutely no training and are just there to get you out of the door. The level of service and attention to detail rivals that of the kid at McDonald's that can't manage to get the meat on the bread when making your sandwich. read more

My first visit here was not a good experience. The price for my visit changed 3 times before I was seen. The price increased each time. Then only after I showed them my insurance benefits rates (which they had on record) it changed for a fourth time. I saw 2 technician before seeing the doctor and no one seemed aware of each other. For example, I was asked to sign and resign the same consent for multiple times. I had to tell each person that I was not wearing contacts. My eye exam and contact lens fitting took over 2 hours. At one point the doctor advanced equipment so close to my eye that I had to pull my head back and ask if he was planning on contacting my eye. He sort of dodged the question at first until I asked him directly "Are you or are you not going to poke me in the eye with that thing." If you have to poke someone in the eye for a medical reason you've got to give them a warning at least. Holy cow! There were several people there that apologized for all the mistakes. But they only got the billing right in the end because I pulled out my insurance benefits information. Otherwise, I definitely would have been overcharged. I can't imagine trusting these folks with something as complex as an eye surgery when they cannot get their basic operational logistics sorted out. I took my mother for the first time to the Mt. Vernon office because she has to see a cataract specialist. We usually go to the Centralia office and they are all so nice. The receptionist in Mt. Vernon received my mom by telling her that she owed $3.90 and she needed to pay it because it was sent to collections. I asked about it and to make the story short, it was a bill from 2017. She explained (after asking someone on the phone) it was NOT sent to collections and that Marion Eye Center does not send statements for less than $10. (We paid). She also said that she didn't know why other offices did not tell us about it. The 2 girls were extremely rude. Then the tech that was meassuring my mother's eyes did not stop chewing gum with her mouth open and you could see the green gum between her teeth plus, for some odd reason, she was extremely loud and kind of rude. I saw a highlighted handwritten note on my mom's chart "$3.90 - bad debt" (seriously? For $3.90 that u never told us about?). The girls that help with getting glasses dont have anything to do so they just stare at you chewing gum and look you upside down. Extremely rude and unprofessional. We had the appointment at 2:50pm and we waited a whole hour to see a doctor. Dr. Faisal was extremely nice, his assistant was also nice, the people in the scheduling department were nice. I wish somebody will train the first two girls we saw because the first impression was AWFUL. read more

The idea that (due to work) my wife had to reschedule two appointments they have permanently banned her. Although when my daughter ordered glasses from them one they charged both my daughter and me but also rescheduled the arrival of the glasses 6 times. So glasses that were only to take 2 weeks took just over 2 months. If you can avoid this place I would do it. Rules for thee but not for me I guess. read more

The eye care is fine. However, during this pandemic, I am disappointed in the lack of hand sanitizing and hand washing. After all, these people are putting their hands in your eyes, day in and day out. I hardly see any hand sanitizer being used let alone anybody washing their hands. It's not really right, I'm afraid of catching COVID. read more

$3500 for Lasik - In case you're coming to the reviews just for prices Staff outnumber the doctor 25:1. Multiple staff members coming in and out of the room during exams to ask the doctor questions or chit chat with another nurse. The doctor and the nurse with short maroon hair would jerk my head around into positions for the eye scanners even after I said I've been wearing glasses since I was a kid, I got it. I waited THREE HOURS and when I finally saw the doctor I told him about the wait and that I hoped we would be done quickly so I could get to work at 5, my original appt was 12:30 and it was almost 4 at this point, he rolled his eyes and asked the nurse what time I got here. When she confirmed my 12:30 arrival time, he then condescendingly explained that they had a process. There is NO REASON a consultation should take 3x as long as the surgery itself. Have some respect for your clients' time. I had a similar experience with the Marion Eye Center at the SIU Heath Center where they were stacking patients into unreasonable time frames with only one doctor. Your system is failing. Fix it. Healthcare shouldn't be like this. read more

I was seen to order contact lenses about 5 months ago and could not afford to order lenses through Marion Eye Center. I paid for the exam in full. After calling twice requesting a copy of my prescription, I felt judged and criticized immediately for wanting to take my prescription elsewhere. During this time I had gotten a new job but my benefits hadn't kicked in. When the benefits kicked in I called to order from them because I finally had money to pay w/insurance benefits to supplement costs. Today I called and was spoken to like I was a disobedient child. I was ridiculed about not ordering contacts on time and was forced to tell them I simply couldn't afford to buy contacts in a timely matter from them. They will now not release my script to contact script to me claiming it is a law. I'm not sure if the legalities are true...but I truly felt like a lesser person after speaking to contact staff. When I was in the last time, I remember being treated poorly by the women in contacts as well. They were gossiping about another co worker at this time and I chose to ignore it. The optometrist told me I did not have to come for a follow up appointment. Specifically told me after I asked...that is not required. I don't Know if this will help anyone else...just wanted to share my experience so others that have gone through similar experiences know they aren't alone. Disrespectful staff that lack appropriate life skills to work in any environment....let alone an environment that requires direct contact with the public. read more

This place is horrible. After numerous visits they told me I needed surgery. I went along with it and the surgery was 30 minutes longer than projected. He let one of his assistants operate on my eye. My vision is 2 times worse and they will not do anything to help me. They just wanted the money. They are rude ,inconsiderate ,and just greedy. Marion Eye Center warranty is terrible! They say they warranty glasses for a year DON'T BELIEVE THEM! I took a pair of safety glasses that I only worn a few times that the lens got a crack in them. Dropped them off at the Marion Eye Center in Harrisburg. Where I bought them at. Was told no problem they were less than a year old. But got a call from them couple hours later saying that they don't warranty safety lens only regular lens. Last pair of glasses I'll buy from them! read more

Husband had cataract surgery both eyes. Each time we were overcharged for the copay. Also had other charges that were reviewed by business office and removed. I went recently for what turned out to be a cyst on my inner eyelid. When I arrived for the cyst removal they tried to charge me another copay. I had already paid $50 and my insurance showed online my copay to be $10. When I arrived they took me back and started the tests for cataract surgery. Be aware, ask questions and watch what your insurance is paying and what you may owe. I am not returning and will find another in-network eye doctor. read more

Make sure you read the reviews before visiting the establishment. They had me patch the wrong eye for my daughter 2 years ago. I only found out after taking her to an opthalmologist in St. Louis for an unrelated issue. The opthalmologist said she needed a different prescription. When I took it in, they told me that was the prescription but it was ordered wrong. My daughter was wearing the wrong glasses for 2 months. Since it was two years ago, I gave them another chance. I ordered my daughters glasses and was told it would be 2 to 4 weeks. I called to check on them and now, after ordered I was told it would be 3 months very rudely. The lady said it wasn't her fault and to take it up with someone else. If I was told that I would not have ordered as my daughter needs her new prescription. I would have went elsewhere. read more

I made an appointment for my 85 yo mother at Marion Eye Center in Carbondale and was told she had a film over her new lens that needed to be removed. The doc felt it was more thick on one side causing light to reflect affecting her vision even more. He referred her to Dr Umana at Marion Eye Center in Harrisburg to remove it. At that appointment Dr Umana did not see ANY film over the lens but decided she should have skin removed from her lid as it was affecting her field of vision. (How two docs can find such totally different diagnoses was disturbing.). But, even more so, Dr Umana wanted her to stop her blood thinner, Xarelto, for 10 days prior to the procedure. Since she had a hx of clots stopping the med was risky. Upon further investigation, and after talking to her own personal physician, the rule for stopping this class of thinner and this type of surgery was for a maximum of 48 hours. When I brought this info to his Uman's office he was unwilling to change his protocol or even offer to look it up. When my mom's physician talked to his office to ask them to stop the med for only 48 hours, per medical protocol, the response was negative. So, my mom was unable to have the surgery because of the egotistical, stubborn Amana who refused to listen to anyone other than himself. 10 days for Coumadin I could agree with but not these new generation thinners. This, coupled with two totally different findings, would prohibit me from giving this business other than 1 star! read more

I came a few years ago because my other eye dr stopped taking my insurance. This place disgusts me and I refused to ever go back. They took me back to the farthest dark room to do my eye exam. When we were done, they didn't give me a chance to put my contacts back in, they took off out of the room and I had to stumble my way out. Thankfully, my mom saw me walking around blindly and came to get me. When we got to the checkout counter, the lady made fun of me having bad eyes loudly so the whole office could hear. Very unprofessional for an Eye Center at that. Did I mention I still couldn't see anything. When we went to walk out the door. I heard a lady say, oh wait, come here and sign this. So I had my mom sign for me as I cried walking out the door. I will never go back. I will spend my life telling everyone what a horrible place this is. read more

I went to get lasik. Took forever to get seen. Appointment was at 9:30 and doctor didnt see me till 11:30. Staff was rude and disorganized. Didnt even have my valium script ready. Didnt wait for valium to kick in before bringing me back to get the surgery. The valium actually made me hyper aware. The numbing drops didnt work. Kept saying owww to let them know I could feel everything and it hurt BAD. Doctor was rough and bossy when positioning my head but I disnt think much of it until after the whole ordeal They said it's just gentle pressure nothing to worry about. It was a BURNING PAINFUL sensation. I let them put the eye openers on me. Then they started putting the eye suction cup thing on me it hurt so bad I yelled. I was told to be quiet. they didnt stop. They positioned the lazer I panicked and threw my arms up to shove it away. I DID NOT want to know what it felt like to get a laser on an unnumb eyeball. Doc got so po-ed and left immediately. the nurses had to help me out of the room. They then told my mom it was my fault for being nervous and kept saying that I was numb. I had my eyes numbed previously i know what numb eyes feel like this was not numb eyes. I kept telling them and crying about my eyes hurting but they said it was just because I was nervous. Now my eyes are blood red, blurry, and burning. I cried for an hour out of pain on the way home. read more

I had no issues with the Marion Eye Center in Carbondale, but I've since moved to marion, and the Marion location has the rudest staff of any business I've ever had the misfortune of visiting. I arrived 15 minutes prior to my appointment, was told that no one was available to give me information on lasix at that time, which was the entire reason i made the appointment. I waited 45 minutes, at which point I asked if I should just reschedule. I was told that I needed to see this doctor for a referral to the doctor who would perform the lasix. After an hour and a half in the waiting room I finally see the doctor who tells me i was misinformed and he couldn't do a lasix consult after 5 and asked me to reschedule. Not a single person offered an apology. I'm certain I can find a business with better time management and more empathetic staff who will be happy to have the $4000 I will spend on lasix. read more

I have been going to MEC for many years, always been pleased. My house burned down a couple years ago & my glasses melted, they got me in immediately & had me some new glasses ready by the next morning. I brought my 13 year old daughter in today for her 1st eye exam because she was getting headaches at school, I mentioned to her that we were going out of town this weekend so she would have to wait to get them until we got back because it usually takes 5-7 days to get the glasses, the sweet girl working in the glasses and contacts department called the guy that makes the lenses and asked him to put a rush on it, and they were ready in an hour!! My daughter is so happy she doesn't have to wait a week and will be able to see better for our trip. So very, very pleased with the staff and doctors!!
