Dear Friends, If…read moreyou want to make an educator happy try using the words free and learning opportunity in the same sentence. The Augusta Canal Discovery Center did just that on their annual Canal Day. I enjoyed it so much that I've returned three times since my Canal Day visit. The center celebrated their second canal day in April by creating a family friendly community event to show off the things that the center offers along with some fantastic performances. Canal Day offered free admission to their interactive exhibits where guest young and old could learn about the importance of the canal. I hadn't realized the significance of the canal until I started exploring. Augusta as we know it would be very different place if Henry Cummings had seen fit to use his intellect somewhere else in North America. After exploring the center, I snagged a discounted ticket on the Petersburg boat. Our facilitator was FANTASTIC!!! Even the littles were entertained with her knowledge and commentary. They also had fantastic performances that day. I didn't include a clip of the performers because I was so engrossed in their excerpt from their play, I completely forgot to record. I'm a sucker for kids showing off their talents. One of my former students performed and my smile was probably the biggest in the crowd. I'll always be in the front row cheering them on. Parents just know that once our kiddo, forever our kiddo. We love getting to see them blossom. I hope that Canal day continues to be an annual event. Until then, check them out. They offer several activities that include the following: Regular Admission: $6(adults), $4(senior/student ) or free with boat tour ticket. Civil War Tour: Call for more information Friday Music Cruise: $27( adults), $25 (senior/student/military). Saturday Music Tribute Tours: $27( adults), $25 (senior/student/military). Canal to Cloth Immersion Tour: $29 (adults), ($27senior/student/military). Group Suggestions for Tours: Have one person book your spots or agree to all book at the same time. The tours have a specific number of seats so you want to be sure everyone gets a spot in your group. Solo Suggestions: Prepare to make new friends and learn. The stigma of solo adventures is lessening and you'd be surprised how your friend circle grows by just getting out there. I would have met my friends Karin and Nikki without going on my solo adventures. Please share your story, reel or photo with me when you venture out to visit them. Wishing you much fun! Sincerely CSRA #augustacanal#canaltocloth#Augustacanaldiscoverycenter#exploringthecsra #augustageorgia #georgia #csra #yelpaugusta

This one doesn't go all the way to the mountains, but you could easily spend a day on it on foot, and biking and boating are options as well. The infrastructure was good, and multiple open bathrooms and water fountains were available. The paths were generally quite wide (as former towpaths) and had plenty of space for bikes and pedestrians to share, with a couple of interesting exceptions. I didn't do any tours, but I expect the history is worth pursuing.

From a customer service perspective, there was a lot of complexity to getting the stuff I needed done, but given that I brought all the appropriate documents, I got the help I needed. I had to take a number, but it was not a long wait, and once I made it to a counter, I was permitted to handle everything I needed in terms of getting a license and a license plate without going back in line, which took several steps and various corrections to paperwork I had worked on. I was a bit leery of whether I would be able to get it done in one go, but I was able to get all my fees paid and walked out with a license printed on the spot (none of that temporary drivers license BS) and a license plate that I will eventually trade in for a special one with a sea turtle on it. This is not a fancy location (unlike North Augusta's local government building), but as government services go, they did a pretty good job.

The 4th Infantry (Ivy) Division memorial on Greene Street fits neatly into Augusta's habit of…read moreplacing its military history right in the center of civic life. It's a modest granite marker, upright and clean‑lined, carrying the division's ivy leaf emblem and a brief dedication to the men who served in the unit. What makes it interesting is how it anchors a very specific chapter of twentieth‑century military history in a city that sent soldiers to every major conflict: the 4th Division fought in the Meuse‑Argonne in World War I, landed at Utah Beach on D‑Day, pushed through the Hürtgen Forest, and later served in Vietnam and Iraq, so the marker becomes a kind of shorthand for a century of deployments. Set in the Greene Street median among other service memorials, it reads less like a standalone monument and more like one voice in a long conversation about duty, sacrifice, and the way Augusta has chosen to remember its veterans across generations. It carries the restrained, almost classical tone that many mid‑twentieth‑century war monuments adopted. The front inscription is direct and inclusive, honoring the men of Richmond County "of every creed and color" who answered the call in 1917 and 1918. That phrasing reflects the era's civic language but also hints at Augusta's layered social history, acknowledging a diverse local population long before the civil rights era reshaped public memorials. The reverse side quotes Kipling's 1914 line "What stands if freedom fall?", a sentiment that ties the local losses to the broader moral framing of the Great War. The marker was erected in 1940 by the Richmond County Association, which means it came more than two decades after the Armistice, during a period when communities across the South were formalizing their commemorative landscapes. The monument is in reasonably good condition - a quick power wash would do wonders. [Review 213 of 2026 - 914 in Georgia - 25402 overall]

When I started reading this marker, I learned about a Georgian who went on to lead for the Union side in the Civil War. Unusual. Titled "Gen. Montgomery C. Meigs, U.S.A.", the marker reads, "One of two native Georgians who served as generals in the U.S. Army during the Civil War, Montgomery C. Meigs was born here on May 3, 1816, grandson of a University of Georgia president. After graduating from West Point, he oversaw construction of some of Washington D.C.'s greatest engineering feats, including the U.S. Capitol dome. Meigs became Quartermaster General of the U.S. Army in 1861, coordinating the massive supply effort throughout the Civil War, and continuing in that position until he retired in 1882. His organizational genius created an efficient war machine that helped defeat the Confederacy. In 1864, Meigs ordered that Arlington, the confiscated plantation of Robert E. Lee's wife, be used for military burials, creating the nation's premier national cemetery. Meigs was buried there when he died Jan. 2, 1892." It is marker number 121-17 and it was erected in 2012 by the Georgia Historical Society, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the Georgia Battlefields Association, and Historic Augusta, Inc. for the Civil War 150 Commemoration. The monument was commissioned by the Ladies Memorial Association of Augusta in 1875. It was designed by the architectural firm of VanGruder and Young of Philadelphia, built by the Markwalter firm of Augusta, carved by Antonio Fontana, and dedicated on October 31, 1878. Around the base of the monument are the life-size statues of four Southern generals in the War Between the States: Thomas R. R. Cobb, Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and William Henry Talbot. A Confederate private is depicted at the top of the shaft. The model for this statue was Private Berry Benson of Augusta. An inscription at the base reads, "In honor of the men of Richmond County who died in the cause of the Confederate States." On one side, it reads "In Memoriam, "No nation rose so white and fair: None fell so pure of crime."" The monument is definitely impressive and it is in excellent condition. There are no markings. There is metered street parking. There were some rallies a few years back to have it removed, but nothing recent. I suppose it will go away at some point.
