You're unlikely to stumble across this place by accident, unless maybe you're staying at the huge Estrel hotel further up the street. The location is -- well, rather unusual -- next to a steel scrapyard overlooking the canal, on the other side an industrial area criss-crossed by the iconic blue and/or pink pipes on stilts you can see all over Berlin.
But it's only 10 minutes walk from SBahn Sonnenallee and definitely worth a journey if you enjoy eating outside in a pleasant walled garden, with the food cooked outside on the charcoal grill. Neptune meets mermaid wall art might not suit all tastes but it adds to the slightly surreal "where are we?" experience.
In fact this is very much the classic Turkish fish & kebab restaurant, good value without being an Imbiss / fast food place. Service is friendly and efficient and the menu (in Turkish, German and English) offers all the choices you'd expect - we enjoyed the Wolfbarsch (Seabass), Lamb in Yoghourt kebab and ribs, most mains generally between €12-16 . Portions are very generous indeed and the salads fresh. Starters are particularly worth exploring, juicy melon and feta cheese, or the "Special" which is a mix of (hot) peppers, yoghourt in a spicy sauce. They are also large so you might wish to share.
Upstairs there is a whole bar / restaurant inside but we have always gravitated to this place early evening when the sun is still shining as it's so pleasant to sit outside. Appears to be open Easter till Autumn rather than the whole year round, so best to ring first to see if they are open. Have paid with a card but one time this wasn't working, no cash point nearby so come prepared!
I stuck to dunkles Hefeweizen (dark wheat beer), but my partner was happy with the (fairly limited) wine list. Needless to say Raki goes well with this cuisine.
Fazit: definitely worth the trek unless you're afraid to leave the hipster surroundings of Kreuzkölln behind... read more
