Enjoyed the Mortified Live event here this past Saturday and was really impressed with the venue…read more The place was spacious enough on two levels, but still had a cozy and intimate environment perfect for this show. And unlike the SF Mortified event I attended last month where most seats were reserved, this one seemed to offer ample seating first come first served, as well as a lovely outdoor courtyard with even more seating. Sound and lighting were ideal. The guest band, Hot and Dangerous, were hilarious and used lots of unconventional instruments along with catchy and comical lyrics, in between journal readings. They did amazing on stage, even though I missed the house band I saw at the previous show. There were bars on both levels, and just a small line at the downstairs bar before the event started. An hour in, there was no line or waiting at all. I tried one of their cocktail specials, the new parish punch, and absolutely loved it, strong and fruity with just a hint of spice, seems like they make good drinks here. Also, we arrived when the doors opened, an hour before showtime, and there was plenty of parking available just a block away.

The people (way way too cool, way too sexy, but I still felt like I fit in somehow?) The vibe (everyone knew the lyrics to the songs, I knew a few, but still) The music (2 rooms, each with their own style, we loved both) The drinks (I went basic here just had rum and coke) I loved how there was an outdoor room so you can dance and look up at the stars. In the main room, there were dancers on stage, exceptional lighting, it was an immersive experience.

A very generous neighbor of mine invited my husband and me to the Alameda Elks Lodge Annual Crab…read moreFeed, which was held yesterday evening. I'm giving the lodge a four star for my dining experience and an enjoyable evening. My husband has been here more than a few times to play games of pool with our friendly neighbor and one of his friends. I have been here before for another event almost three years ago. The interior is beautiful, but the walls are thin. One can actually hear people talking in the next room. Our meeting place was the Mahogany Room for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. I did not want to stuff myself with the appetizers and not have enough room in my stomach for the main entree - crab. Nor did I want any libation before the meal. After the cocktail hour, we were escorted to the Rathskeller (basement of the lodge) where the dinner was held. The gentlemen on the waitstaff were lined up in an orderly manner, serving us whatever we desired - be it the bowtie/penne pasta, dinner rolls/garlic bread, coffee, dessert. Presentation of the crab, the wines (red and white), Caesar salad and the antipasti plates was excellent...casual, yet classy. Dessert was a serving of raspberry sorbet. The only minor drawback was the bowtie/penne pasta served on the same plate as the salad plate. Even though I did not win any of the door prizes after making a donation of $20 for 20 raffle tickets, they had some nice ones, such as the $100 gift card from Scott's Seafood, $100 gift card for Yoshi's dinner and show, $50 gift cards from La Penca Azul, C'era Una Volta, 1400 Bar and Grill, Jim's Coffee Shop, Pier 29. From what I heard, the lodge raised about $1,500 in raffle ticket sales. I also have to give kudos to the waitstaff, many of whom were very tolerable and patient with this woman who sat at the next table behind my husband. She was in the wine (whine) mode. "I want penne pasta. I don't want this dinner roll with butter. I want some garlic bread. Don't you guys have any garlic bread?" On and on she went...egads...she had a sense of entitlement. Yes, there were two bottles of wine at each table, but her incessant whining almost had me do a "face palm" on her. Ooh, I wanted to offer her a piece of cheese, which would have complemented a glass of wine very well. (Now, quit your whining, lady...lol.)

First group to walk through the doors at 11 am on a Saturday. Tired and happy from the beautiful hike we had planned to spend the entire day here. Greeted by a friendly blonde female bartender who had no problem trying my crazy ideas.... I guess 2 parts fireball whiskey and 1 part pineapple juice isn't common? Unfortunately, for me since I was entirely interested in the food option, the cook does a lot of local community work and wasn't going to be in until Monday. Anyways, place has a bunch of games from casual board games to dominos even all the way to the game I could not convince my group to play. TWISTER! Continuing to asks the lady questions I learned they do karoake nights frequently, have live music and dance nights occasionally and those dance nights are sometimes themed. The place has an amazing outside patio that transcends into a small concert area with a stage and lights. Overall it is a cool lil spot. I can't give a fully thought out score because too much was missing from what I think I can experience. I want to go back but distance will make it difficult.

A 12 min drive towards La Honda from Alice is Apple Jack's where its manager, Ruger, enlisted his Chef friend, Charlie, to offer a small, but yummy menu for primarily meat lovers. He cooks on the back grill and rest prepped in cozy kitchen. You pay either cash or Venmo directly to Chef. I ordered the hamburger with cheese, blue cheese salad, and "adult" mac & cheese cause it's spicy not spiked with alcohol as I thought. $30 for everything. The portions are ample to split between hubby and me then wash down with a cold cider from the tap. I ate with my eyes. The salad ingredients were fresh and generous with the dressing heavy handed. The chef prepared burger the perfect med-rare so not bloody. The burger and mac& cheese were not greasy. So my aging stomach gratefully didn't require anti-acid remedy. There is local homemade turkey stew for non beef eaters, which I would like to try when weather is colder. I'm also intrigued by the steak bits over mash. There is outdoor seating. It's good for a large group or want to listen to tranquility of forest & creek (with the occasional zoom of a car driving by) instead of chatter of locals catching up on the day, cracking of pool balls, or inquisitive visitors want to learn more about life in La Honda. One of the two dog ambassadors, Lucy (I think), will come by to let you pet her or feed her a treat from the jar on the counter while she sniffs around for food that "accidentally" fall from your plate to eat. The women's restroom was clean and bright better than most dive bars. Apple Jack's watering hole ambience is not for everyone.
