History
Established in 2020.
Constructed circa 1860 for Spanish merchant Jose Maria Anguera, Margaret Place has a storied past. Throughout much of its history, the residence served as a rental property, functioning as a boarding or rooming house for much of the 20th century, with hundreds of tenants passing through its doors.
Originally located at 17 Prytania Street, the property was renamed 1133 Margaret Place in 1900, honoring Irish immigrant Margaret Haughery (1813–1882). Haughery’s legacy of compassion, especially her devotion to orphans in New Orleans, is commemorated by her statue in Margaret Place Park, directly across from the residence.
The property was fully restored by young architect Trenton Gauthier, AIA from 2015 to 2020 with an emphasis on quality in depth, delivered through a layering of high-tech building amenities, fully contemporary interiors, and painstakingly restored historic architecture.
Meet the Business Owner: Trenton G.
I'm a young, native architect who has been privileged to stay at the world's best hotels and punk enough to look past the glitz and see ways that they could be improved. I wanted to create Margaret Place as a way of turning my home into a hub of community and activity and as a living laboratory for advancing hospitality and high-end residential architecture. What excites me most is sharing amazing experiences with guests, hosting unforgettable events, and supporting my staff of creatives and the city's coolest neighborhood.
