I think more often than not people get complacent in their careers, including the medical or mental health field, which I would chalk up to human nature. However, she never made me feel like my kid was number or just another patient. She was someone going through something and Jess was going to figure it out. We had to stop seeing Jess due to some circumstances out of my control. Which only lead us to a merry go round of therapists and it wasn't until then, that I was able to fully appreciate her, not only for her emotional investment in my child but also for her instincts, which were proven to be spot on. While on that mental health merry go round, I learned that not every therapist has the capability to convey a genuine sense of commitment and concern for their client/patient , however Jess did. Taking on someone else's emotional pain, trauma, anxieties and fears has to be one of the hardest jobs I could imagine, especially when it comes to children...so I can understand having and internal shut off valve and not fault anyone needing to enact that protective mechanism. But as a parent who's child hurts....I sure as shit want someone who sees my kid, as I see them. Once again I saw Jess early in her career. They thought we wanted individual therapy even though we booked a couples counseling appointment. If you are queer and want to work with this practice, I recommend vetting their qualifications to treat "LGBT" people. Since it's listed a lot on their website, it's worth inquiring. It also looks like a fair amount of reviews for this practice are written by non-clients. I suspect that their rating from clients is lower than it appears to be.
