I was reading some old reviews from 2016 which are not longer accurate. I recommend reading current reviews that reflect the work of the new owner. The time and attention that has been invested in organizing the well cared for plants is significant. I am seeing new varieties, even the little 6-packs are well cared for. I have had really good experience here with shrubs, perennials and a few small-ish evergreen trees. They have all done really well since I planted them. I find garden centers that have truly healthy plants are what I want. I would like to see more truly native plant options though- they have had some, but could easily incorporate more. (not cultivars, true natives) They have a healthy variety of offerings so increasing the native % would make it a fabulous spot. read more

For a small nursery, they have a great selection and very reasonable prices on trees. It helps to know what you want going in, but I was really surprised at some of the finds. Plus, their growing selection of native plants is just fantastic. read more

I bought a 6 foot tree stand. When I got home I realized it was missing a piece. I returned and explained to the associate outside. He said I think we are out of 6 foot stands get an 8 foot stand as an exchange. I got it and took it to the register. She said that will be $2.11. I said is that for the inconvenience charge? She laughed nervously and I paid for the inconvenience. Shop local they say. Pay more for less. Lesson learned. read more

Although I was initially excited to go here, since we moved into a house in town with a nice big back yard and garden, this place was a big disappointment. We went to pick up an Xmas tree here the week before the holiday. That part was simple enough. We chose one, found someone who worked there, they wrapped the tree, and I was able to get a kid from the lot to haul the tree out to our car with me to tie it down to our roof rack. However, when we went in search of tree decorations, a tree base, lights, etc., the process quickly went off the rails! The store shelves were nearly bare, what was available was damaged or in rough shape, all tree items were grossly overpriced, and no employee was anywhere to be found. In a series of separate interactions with one employee (we approached this woman independently, the only employee either of us could find in our divide-and-conquer strategy), we were each berated by her and told how we were shopping incorrectly. (?!) Certainly, we all understand the stresses of the holiday season. I've suffered through working in retail over the Holidays. No fun. That said, in separate interactions with this woman, I was told "Well, I can't leave my spot, so you're just gonna hafta go find it yourself!" (The tree bases weren't in either place she described; I searched the small lot for 10 minutes!) and then my wife arrived at the checkout with expensive lights in damaged packaging, she was repeatedly given a hard up-sell, pressured to join their rewards program. Despite politely declining twice, this same woman kept insisting that my wife provide all her contact information in order to complete the sale. When, on the third hard-sell push, my wife finally stated clearly "No, thank you," this woman replied "Fine! Your loss!" and promptly walked away. Bizarre and completely unnecessary behavior. read more

I think mgc is the best around ; products, especially plant material, is oustanding. It's called opportunity cost. Why drive somewhere else? They have excellent quality material, plus, most of it Is special , unusual, beautiful varieties that are selected from great growers that are appropriate to what will work here . The staff is great ; able to give expert advice and will go above and beyond. They usually special order you what you are looking for , or suggest anything you might need that will work in your space. House plants and floral arrangements too, all kinds of other supplies! The poor ratings of this place are unwarranted, and some Facebook postings last year were downright shameful. This place has beautiful, hearty plantings that last and last, while you will find that mixing in plantings like rose bushes from other bargain basement spots is usually "you get what you pay for". The staff onsite is always chock full of excellent recommendations. Use your common sense folks - If you ask a temporary worker (probably an 18-year old high school student trying to earn some bucks for the holidays) 3 days before Christmas how many strings of remaining lights on the thinning shelves you can cascade together .... or which Christmas tree type is heartiest - don't be surprised if you get a blank stare. But the more experienced folks walking the store (especially during the Spring when everyone is trying to buy the right plant for a particular amount of sun....) -- the workers I encounter will spend a half hour reviewing every detail on the stuff they sell .... when it flowers, how to care for it over the winter, which fertilizer to use - they are always informative and easy to find when I am there. We get our flowers, shrubs, mulch, wreaths, Christmas tree, etc from them every year - for many years. Always top notch and worth paying g a bit more for. They give free food at the holidays for folks shopping for Christmas trees - and they STILL get complaints from the Scrooge's out there on Facebook, etc - anywhere these whiners can get an audience. "They ran out of (free) food a half hour earlier than advertised" (PS. They give free food for hours, from breakfast thru lunch, before you strolled in for free burgers for you and your 4 kids) ... "my (free) hot chocolate wasn't hot enough". Good grief - there are some who will complain about anything - and use multiple online venues to trash on any business who doesn't 100% cater to every elitist whim they put out there. Sickening! Bottom line - This place is great - they have earned my business ... give them a chance and you won't be disappointed. read more

I called from out of town to have a bouquet delivered same day. Just received a picture of it and it's beautiful. I asked them to use whatever was fresh and it turned out lovely. I ordered full cord of kiln dried firewood, and after stacking and measuring, discovered I was short 1/8th cord (16 cu ft) I called, talked to guy who said he thinks I got enough, because he delivered cords to many other customers who received 1 less "scoop" into the truck, and he says none of them complained. When I ordered the wood, I specifically asked if their "cord" is true 4'x4'x8' and they said yes. I was shorted 4'x4'x1'. So they've admitted shorting all their customers (1 less scoop) and refuse to make it right when confronted. Only positive is that the quality of wood is good, but I paid a premium for it. Look elsewhere for firewood! read more

Marbleahead Garden has great quality products. Sometimes it is worth it to pay a little extra so your plants last and your vegetables thrive. Terrible customer service! Bought a rose bush clearly marked $3,99 (it wasn't the only one and even had the name of the rose on the tag) and it rang up for $30. When I questioned the manager dismissively told me it was wrong and refused to honor the marked price. Didn't even offer to return for money back. They would be far better served by doing the right thing and not trying to make customers feel dumb for their mistakes! read more

This is the first review I have ever, EVER written on any website. But I was so shocked by the low degree of customer service while at the MHD Garden Center today that I had to put it out there... I spoke to 3 people total. The only courteous one seemed to be the youngest, least experienced person there. Not only are they not helpful in educating the customer, but what is much, much worse is that they aren't friendly at all. They don't even look at you when speaking to you. While checking out, the man at the register was doing something else and I had to prompt every question about delivery, becoming part of the buy program, etc. The whole point about local businesses is having a personal touch. And this is not the case at all at the Marblehead Garden Center. It's a real shame. I want to support local businesses, but this experience inspires me to go to Home Depot. read more

The Marblehead Garden Center has a diverse selection of beautiful plants. That being said. the place is totally and consistently disorganized, one can barely maneuver a cart, the plants are often dead or diseased, and the staff is sullen. This is the case every single year that I've attempted to go for the past 6 years. It's proves to be a miserable experience, despite the beauty of the plants. I really wish that they could develop a better system of organization and inventory management, because it is one of the few places in the north shore with a decent selection. read more

This is a great place. Not sure why there are negative review. I end up down there frequently for everything from Christmas presents to shrubs. They have a wide selection, are reliable, staff is very helpful, and their prices are appropriate. At the beginning of the summer, particularly on weekend, the high school/college students at the registers too often wait on someone who just walks up to the window rather than people waiting in line. But this is not exactly a big problem. The owner and staff are very helpful and work with you in, for example, overcoming a landscaping issue. We almost never shop here, because the service is sullen at best, the place is disorganized, and the product quality is both mediocre and overpriced. However, we were given a gift card to use, and we decided to get some flowers to bring to a local organization we support. I won't go into the details, but our experience underscored our previous impression of this business -- poor and low quality selection, terrible customer service, and ridiculously overpriced. Bought an expensive tree that was unsuccessful from the get go. I called and asked to return it and they refused. They said that the owner/manager would call me back. He never did. I called again and again they offered that someone would come and look at it. He did, he blamed me for the unsuccessful growth and refused to take it back or refund me. Wish that I had bought it at Home Depot where they would have refunded all of my money - no questions asked. I will never return to the Marblehead Garden Center. read more
