Stanford basketball has a fantastic program and is really the only bright spot that emerged from the decision to join the ACC. Where else can you get fantastic seats for a low price to watch Duke, NC, Louisville and all the other storied ACC teams? Stanford MBB has an exciting team with great talent and always puts on a great show at home, and many upsets (and near upset) of top-25 teams. Unfortunately the University is still penny wise pound foolish when it comes to upgrading the fan experience. Long lines to enter the arena for big games, mediocre concessions (which still require ordering on outdated keypads or self-scanning) and perhaps a worse food selection than the pathetic 7/11 on Lytton street. It would not take much money or effort to upgrade the concessions but Stanford does not care. And the student section is empty for most games which is a pathetic commentary on the current student body (was packed in my day). read more

It's a lovely little arena, especially when my Irish ladies are beating a pretty good Cardinal team. I expected it to be bigger, but it feels bigger than it is. Acoustically, it's very loud, which only increases the home-court advantage. The design is pretty wild. When you enter the outer doors from outside, you think you're stepping inside, but you're not. There are large exterior holes cut into the walls, with slanted roofs leading down *into* the building. There are huge gutters under those slanted roofs, so you wouldn't get wet if it were raining, but you're not technically "inside" until you enter the seating bowl itself, which has these special airtight doors for that very reason. (Normally, the vomitoria [tunnels] that lead into arenas and stadia are open on both ends, but in this case, they need doors on the outside to make the inside of the seating bowl itself truly inside.) This should be a four-star review, but absurdly rich Stanford had to be cheap and not install individual seats throughout the arena. Even arenas with sections of bleachers usually have individual seats on the sides of the court, but we were sitting almost at mid-court, and we had to deal with awful benches. I would have preferred flat bleachers, but Stanford installed those awful separated plastic seats familiar from its football stadium. (They're literally the exact same models as at Stanford Stadium.) They're an awful hybrid of bleachers and seats. Call them the worst of both worlds--enough seating room for only the smallest of butts, but instead of a flat bleacher that allows you to sit wherever you want, these have small metal or plastic separators, which means your tush hurts after the game unless you're small enough to fit right in the middle of the tiny seat. It's also needlessly far from its designated parking structure--the structure isn't actually that far from the arena, but there's no crosswalk in a logical place; you have to walk way past Maples before you're allowed to cross the street. And the traffic directors on game days are a joke. They just wave you along without regard for which of many different events you're attending. If I had done what they had told me, we would have parked almost a mile from Maples, and one of my guests had mobility issues. read more

Bought season tickets to Stanford basketball this year. Had been here a couple times many years ago, but not recently. It's designed well for sight lines for basketball compared to something like SAP center. The seating is a mishmash of options. Seats close to the floor on the ends have backs and cushions, but thin. Seats starting in row A are actually pretty comfortable. Upper deck is curved plastic butt holders on top of bleachers, with no backs. Concessions are pretty weak and will be absolutely overwhelmed when the big draw visitors come and fill the stadium. There is convenient free parking. read more

Over the years, I've come here to watch the Cardinal women's volleyball matches. I think this stadium is fantastic! Pretty much all of the seats here give you a good view of the court and the players. If you happen to get that last seat in one of the four corners, at least you can watch the huge TV display screens. They sell food/snacks here, too. As well as Stanford apparel/schwag. A Stanford band plays during breaks to get the crowd going and energized. read more

Came here recently to watch the USC men's basketball game. The gym definitely needs some upgrades, it's an older building and feels like it lacks proper air flow. The entire building felt very stuffy and hot, which made it very uncomfortable to sit through an entire game. They offer a few concession stands selling things like hotdogs, nachos, fries, hot chocolate, beer and more. Nothing fancy or tasty, typical college campus snacks for a game. Prices were on the higher side, which caught me off guard for a college game. They have a parking structure that is a nice and easy 8 min walk to the gym. Pro-tip: unless it's an amazing game, I advise to leave the game early so you don't get stuck in the garage queue leaving...it took us 30 mins to exit. read more

Came to see the USA Women's Basketball Team take on the Stanford women. If you're not a student or Stanford alum, getting good tickets is going to be hard. What isn't hard - the parking! At least at the event I attended, there was plenty of close parking. Free too! Again, might not always be the case. The ticketless system where they will ONLY let you use Apple Wallet - that was a complete fail. I have never used Apple Wallet before and it didn't seem like most people had. Trying to scan the ticket from your cell into these kiosk devices... I didn't see anyone do it successfully. The ladies working the door were just waving people through as no one could figure out how to scan the ticket into the tablet. They need to use an easier system (Axs tickets app seems to work much better). Seats are relatively comfortable. There are plenty of concession choices (no beer though!) and lots of vendors going through the stands with sno cones, waters, snacks... you name it. There aren't a lot of ushers and they seem to disappear right after the start of the game. So this translates to people coming in late and trying to find their seats during the game, interrupting your view and just in general making for a chaotic environment. I realize this isn't a professional arena where they will make you wait for a break in play before letting people enter the stands... but it's just common courtesy. I guess I thought the brainiacs at Stanford would know that? They don't. Not a terrible small venue to see a game. Some minor irritations, which would, of course, be made more bearable with a beer or two... read more

This was one of the worst stadiums I've ever been to. Very disorganized and I had a very frustrating experience there. We parked in the Maples lot but were told we needed to go to the other side of the building to purchase tickets. So I left my family and went there. I realized the tickets were marked up 300% than the online price (but the online purchases require a 45% service fee) but the online store was down already. I bought the tickets and was ready to go through the security line so that I can give my family their tickets at the other side. But the security staff said my bag was too big. I showed her that it was the same exact size but she claimed it wasn't and she wouldn't let me go give the tickets to my family. So I had to walk all the way around the building again and I find out they made my kids pour out their water and dump their snacks. (My child said Stanford's tap water was really nasty so she didn't drink anything the entire game btw.) So I had to go put all our stuff away in the car then walk back to the extra long line for the third time. Another person asked me where I got the tickets. I told him the other side of the building. He was disappointed and said, "I wish they would've told us or posted a sign or something so I didn't have to wait this whole time." There were a lot of issues with the way they run things here and they really need to reevaluate their rules and consider better signages. read more

What the heck goes on at this place? As an avid college bball fan, we go to a lot of games at other venues, but the list of items you can't bring in this place takes the cake. My poor kids spent hours on a couple signs they denied entry. They didn't allow my wallet in. They reluctantly allowed my daughter in with a pennant, but confiscated the stick. They wouldn't allow my T1D daughter to bring in water, and gave us trouble about her medical supply bag. I can't imagine what's happened at this venue to require such strict rules. It was also interesting to see such a sizable team of 70 something male ushers continuously asking fans to not put their feet on or even touch with their knees the seats in front of them. It was such a bizarre experience. read more

came to see volleyball and basketball games here. a bit small compared to some of the other colleges in the division but its loud and full of cheering fans. big screen in the middle to keep you entertained and informed of the score and stats. tickets are decent priced and good view from everywhere. seats are a bit cramped though. the food is decent, typical hot dog nachos pizza at typical prices. dollar water when you use apple pay. plenty of bathrooms and ushers to help you find your way. parking lot is kind of small so come early to find a spot otherwise you might have to find another parking lot farther away. it is free though so thats nice. although the campus is super nice to have a scenic walk. read more

Flashback alert! After spending years of my youth attending Stanford Women's Gymnastics meets, my recent return to Maples was a bit of de ja vu. The faces may have changed, but the gym meet structure and venue looked exactly the same. The venue is quite large as they also have basketball games in here, but you can still see pretty well from all areas. Plus, the big screen helps, and they can play the cliché gymnastics montages. Seating: After years of sitting in the smaller Burnham Pavilion with no backs on the seats as we watched flips and flops (a flip flop is actually a term for a gym skill), the comfortable seats nearer to the center court in Maple are a nice change. But, don't worry, there are still uncomfortable bleachers also! Parking: If you don't know where to park, you will get lost. And even on the weekend, you won't necessarily get a spot. All in all, it's a decent venue. Not the smallest, nor the largest. At least there are some comfy seats and you feel like it's an interactive experience. And you're close enough that they can throw t-shirts at you! read more

Not a bad place, but I was surprised how tight seatng is here. They benches are so close and the couple of times I came, I sat next to people that don't have any problems with invading one's personal space. Unfortunately, the times I came were also the times the women basketball team lost. I have a feeling I should stick to across the bay for my other favorite NCAA team. read more

We bought tickets to see the Stanford vs. UCLA meet, the very last for Miss Val. It was a sold out event, since Katelyn Ohashi became internet famous. First, the traffic was jam packed due to the layout of Stanford. It took about 30 minutes to get to the open parking lot. Thankfully, the parking lot is free on weekends. On the walk to the stadium, we witnessed a driver hit a cyclist on a roundabout. The campus police got to it quickly. Once we got in, the seating was very confusing. The lower section is reserved for students, which some people didn't know about and got kicked out of. Some people lingered in the walkway, blocking the view, but the usher moved them away quickly. The seats were squished so you'd feel the knees of the people behind you, and it was stuffy. I had a seat open for my husband, who was getting food, but a really rude woman sat there, even after I said someone was sitting there. I ended up finding better seats. Ha, to her! I did enjoy the meet, since UCLA is one of my favorite teams. However, I am on the fence of whether or not to visit Maples Stadium again. I don't think it's really meant to fit 6,000 people comfortably. If I did, I would come here an hour early, or take Lyft and walk. read more

My best memories of college are in this arena, but its gotten even better. They recent renovation has eliminated the burnt popcorn smell, lowered the roof to make the small arena even more claustrophobic for opposing players, and added some class to the venerable home of the Cardinal. What better way to spend a Thursday or Saturday evening than watching the Stanford men's basketball team defend home court. The best basketball in the Bay Area takes place in Maples. The only thing I don't like about the arena is that I don't have season tickets and that some of the fans are really fair-weather. Oh yeah, and the women's basketball team plays here and they're pretty damn good too. read more

Great sports venue. I come here a few times a year to watch womens volleyball and basketball with my kids or friends. Great place to bring kids and have them watch some of the best athletes in the nation compete....im always in awe! I buy my tickets online and save them on my phone. Great paperless option. They sell Cardinal gear inside. Parking has gotten better and i recently parked across the street. All the seats are good. However the best seats are taken by season tix holders. i just wish they would open up (sell) some of those seats from season ticket holders who dont show up for games. There is a way to sell them back and open up those seats to others. Overall i love coming here and supporting women's college sports. read more

Maples is an alright venue itself. Not the worst but definitely not the best. I've been following the women's basketball program since 2006 so I've been here quite a few times. PROS: the teams are stellar. Amazing talent. family-friendly experience Bathrooms close to seating. Scoreboards are really nice & modern. Cons: The parking- eh. For a bigger venue, obviously you're going to need a parking structure but it's just not as convenient as Leavey stadium (Santa Clara). You have to cross 2 crosswalks and traffic in the garage can take a while. You should know they have a STRICT BAG POLICY. No larger than 4.5" x 6.5" I understand why it's put in place but the actual dimensions are ridiculous, especially for women's purses. The food. very pricy. The soft pretzels were really dry and the kettle korn for $7 was not very good or worth it. Prefer Santa Clara or USF as a venue but will continue to come for the great teams! read more

My first experience watching a sporting event here was a great one as I saw the #1 ranked women's volleyball team stay unbeaten by beating USC after dropping the first set to them and then taking the next three. The pavilion is a great venue to watch college sports as it's the right size to have everyone close enough to enjoy the games and large enough to get loud and really get in to that exciting college competition spirit or atmosphere. read more

A friend of Matt's, who is currently employed @ Stanford University, has a bunch of tickets for the 4 of us to go see Cardinals' Basketball, who'll be hosting the Oregon Ducks. Matt loves college baskeball, but unable to followed the sport in recent years, because of his busy schedule. Matt's first ever college basketball game as a spectator live, and to one of the elite university campus in the country. Stanford is known to have a powerful sporting program as well. The Fantastic 4 was shocked how beautiful and breath-taking the campus is. But Maples Pavillion, where the Cardinals play hoops, is little runned down, which ruins the image of the campus. It is kind of a bad combo. Well, it's only a campus facility, not other high-profile arenas where professional teams play across the country .i.e. Oracle Arena, San Jose Arena, Staples Center... Although the aging basketball facilities, fans and alumnis were very lively, in doing their best to rock the house down. In conclusion, Stanford did win the game over Oregon, who is one of top 25 college teams in the nation. The Fantastic 4's first ever college basketball game was no disappointment. Daddy hopes his kids do well in their educational studies, and hopefully go to a University like where Chelsea Clinton built. It is still too early for the kids to decide on their future, but Matt hopes it's the best. read more

This review is only for Maples Pavilion. Mr, an Alum @ Stanford took me to see a Sunday basketball game. I was excited, I love sports: Football (NFL & College - Go LSU!), Basketball (Lakers) & Hockey (Detroit). I don't know why but everytime Mr & I would attend a basketball game, we are approached to participate in some marketing game. My answer is always no, thank you, I'm just here to watch the game. We found out later that Maples Pavilion is a dry stadium, bummer. My SJSU at least served beer. The staff were great though, however the concessions stand are being manned by high school kids. It's bad enough that there's no alcohol (I'm a social alky), they butchered my caramel machiatto. Try drinking coffee with garlic fries. :( Oh well, at least Stanford won the game. It used to be so much cooler before the remodel. What was all that money for anyway? They didn't do anything. Now there are fences and guards and special blocked off seats for the high muckymuck donors so you can't even get close to the floor like you used to. Stanford has gone corporate in everything now. We used to have season tickets for basketball but dropped them due to the crazy prices and poor teams. And what's with the redcoat ushers anyway? Came here to watch the currently number 18 ranked Stanford vs the number 1 Penn State Wrestling match. When the number one team in the nation come to town and you are a fan of the sport it is a must for one to show up. Everyone showed up as fans broke the record for most fans during a wrestling match at the Pavilion. It was a great experience as my buddies got their chance to be on tv the PAC 12 Network, I got a souvenir that the mascot throws into the crowd, and got to see some great wrestling. United for wrestling, both Penn State and Stanford, and wrestling fans got a chance to see some highly ranked athletes compete. 12 of the 20 wrestlers were ranked in the top 20 in the nation. Penn State led by California native Morgan MacIntosh ranked number 1 in the 197 weight class, while Stanford is led by freshmen and number 4 ranked at 141 weight class Joey McKeena. The highlight match of the night was at weight class 141 ranked number 4 Joey McKeena of Stanford vs ranked number 5 Jimmy Gulibon of Penn State. The matches went as expected meaning the higher ranked wrestler won. Penn State dominated the matches, and Stanford looks good being a young team. I would look for both team to have some All-Americans at the end of the season. read more

I rather enjoyed our roadie to Palo Alto to catch UCLA at Stanford -- well, the experience anyway, and not the result of the game! Maples Pavilion is definitely a great place to see a game. It would've been nice had the student section filled out with actual students, but that's what happens when you catch a game during a session break. Unlike Haas up in Berkeley, the upper-level seating is a lot less cramped. The highest rows are also not obstructed-view, which is also a plus. I'm going from feel here -- not bothering to look up the actual capacity -- but Maples definitely feels more intimate and closer to the floor than Haas. Only con was mentioned by other reviewers -- like Haas, upper level seating doesn't have seatbacks. So after Caltraining it from SF, sitting in a backless seat, and Caltraining it back, my crappy back was definitely sore. But the basketball-viewing experience was superb! read more

I came here today to see Stanford women's bball beat #1 UConn and end their 90-game winning streak...wooo GO CARD! :D The arena is a lot of fun - because it is so small and has such a low ceiling, the fans are really loud. Really, really loud...I have somewhat sensitive ears but the noise in here was on par with plenty of concerts and I would have enjoyed the game a wee bit more if I didn't have my fingers in my ears half the time :P Still a lot of fun though! And the fact that it is so small means there's really not a bad seat in the house. read more

Go with the lower level seats!!! They have actual chairs... I expected the uppers to be benches, no worries, I can deal. But they are curved to differentiate between each seat, and I don't think my behind is too big (size 8, on a skinny day) And I had trouble not spilling over into my neighbors personal space.
