It's convenient if you have business on campus or at the medical center, and if you bring a car. Otherwise, the closest food outside of breakfast is a decent walk away, or you can pay for delivery. They also seem to hire a lot of students to work the front desk, which is great for work experience, but can make customer service spotty - I asked a few basic questions when I checked in, and while I sort of got answers, it was pretty clear that the students working the desk didn't have the knowledge a regular staff member would have had. Overall this was a good stay though, without any serious complaints.

Our room was a suite with a large kitchen area with almost a full refrigerator and freezer, stove, sink, dishes, etc. The beds were decent and the room was clean. They offer a nice complimentary continental breakfast with all the usual suspects (make your own waffles, cereal, eggs, bacon, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, very nice muffins, and more). If you want to be near the university, this is a great option.

The staff was so attentive - they were quick to respond whenever we had questions, even during the evening hours when we arrived to the cabin late Friday evening. They checked in and made sure we were comfortable and were communicative before, during, and after our stay. We wish we could've lived in the cabin we rented for the weekend! There were so many thoughtful details throughout the house itself and it had literally everything we needed. We will definitely be renting through them again! Thank you for an amazing weekend.

That winter, Utah had historic snowfalls. I began contacting SML as early as March to express concern about the snow. I was assured that if it did not melt by May, SML had equipment where they could and remove the snow in time for the ground to dry. Come May, SML did not remove snow, but gladly took full payment for both the Hollow and the house, for our other rentals, and those of our guests. Then, 23 days before our wedding, the other owner, emailed us to abruptly cancel our venue at the Hollow. There was no phone call, no apology, just an explanation that they were concerned about their lawn recovering this summer, and that the stream was louder than usual. They had no alternative venue, and suggested we book the Sundance Resort for our venue - a thoughtless recommendation to make 3 weeks before our wedding as all of our vendors (catering, rental etc.) were well past their cancellation policies and Sundance Resort also had been completely booked as of the year before. SML then suggested they could get permission to host our wedding at the house that we were already renting. When SML confirmed, it also came with "stipulations" of an additional $4,000 "fee" plus $3,000 security deposit - un-coincidentally the exact the sum we had paid for the Hollow. With zero options, this felt like extortion, and we accepted. This now required us to re-plan an entire wedding in a couple of weeks, and forfeit substantial investments that were made in anticipation of having the venue at the Hollow. During the process of replanning the wedding, SML owners were unresponsive at best. It took days for them to respond to emails (often requiring 2 and 3 emails plus phone calls and texts to get a response), and phone calls would go unreturned. This contributed to an already extremely stressful situation that any bride would describe as a complete nightmare. In the end, the lawn at the Hollow was green and healthy the week of our wedding and SML appeared to be setting up another event. We were respectful the entire weekend left the house spotless, yet the owner was belligerent, rude, and unprofessional. The way events were also handled from the cancellation of our wedding to checking-out are beyond the bounds of human decency, let alone professionalism. This is a family run business, who runs their business without concern for their impact on others and makes unethical grabs at additional profits after they take every effort to upend a wedding. They truly took what was supposed to be the best day of our lives and ruined much of the joy in the occasion. If you are considering SML for an important event, I can recommend more strongly to look elsewhere.

This was my first excursion to a bed and breakfast and it was pretty amazing!…read more We drove up from Phoenix to Salt Lake for the weekend and stayed here with Doug & Karen and a few other guests. The house itself or Hus as they call it from the original Scandinavian design of it, was super warm and inviting. It was incredibly clean throughout and our room was great sized and very comfortable. The bathroom was big and it had a great shower as well. I was curious about how they could possibly supply hot water to everyone as I think they have 4 or 5 guest suites and Doug showed me how they have two hot water tanks for the just the three rooms upstairs and more for the rooms downstairs. They really seemed to think everything through here. Lots of open space in the house and at no time did we feel like guests, we felt like we were staying with friends and that was very unique to me having never done this before. Let's see, they had snacks and beverages out at some points during the day or evening and I apologize, I cannot remember which. Breakfast was OUTSTANDING! We had everything, all of the foods were there. Eggs, sausage and apple rings, pastries, fruits, juices. Everything was fantastic! I do wish we had taken more time there as it was so nice. Already thinking about going back next summer for a few days. Thanks Karen! Thanks Doug! If I can figure out how I'll put a few pictures up that I took as well.

The rooms are decorated for different locations, we stayed in Catherine, which has it's own private balcony. The rooms are all beautifully decorated, with the bathrooms even coordinating with the theme. Many of the rooms have quilts made by Karen and Doug's oldest daughter. The beds and pillows were comfy and we felt right at home during our stay. Engen Hus is immaculate. I enjoyed all the natural light and attention to detail. The owner's, Karen and Doug, are kind and helpful. Breakfast was a wonderful meal, with so much food. We especially liked the fresh fruit and homemade coffee cake. We will definitely return for another stay!
