I love falafel. It's not so easy to get good falafel, and among many places stateside I have found a stubborn resistance to putting the hurt on it. Not so at Maoz. This conveniently-located (just a stone's throw from Centraal Station) eatery boasts many options (all vegan, too!), but there really is no contest--the falafel is awesome. It's hot and fresh and perfectly seasoned. It comes in a warm and pillowy pita. You get access to an incredibly inviting salad bar with which to top your masterpiece. There are sauces galore. (Try the ones that are labeled hot chili if you like a pleasant bit of tongue-tingling goodness.) Prices are reasonable, and though the place was hopping, it was easy to find seating, which is available inside and out and is clean and comfortable. I went for an early dinner (I have no idea how long I have been awake), but this would be a perfect lunch spot. They also have freshly-squeezed orange juice. If you are a vegetarian or enjoy eating veggie, then Maoz is a great place to grab a quick bite to eat. The concept of Maoz is simple in Netherland: It is either mushroom or falafel in mini or large pita with lettuce and mayo (If you opt for mayo). I recommend you skipping the mayo and chose your own variety of topping and sauces that are provided at the bar. The condiments are pickled cabbage, cucumber, onion and few other things and variety of sauces such as wasabi sauce, yogurt sauce, garlic sauce and handful of others (that is why you need to skip the mayo). The sandwich by itself is simple but if you pick the right sauce and topping to your liking, it is tasty. This is a great food for quick bite to eat without getting to heavy while you are exploring the city. It is fairly cheap also: $5.25 for mini and $6.96 for full pita. Word of caution: When eating in eatery like this in Europe, you have to be careful in regard to health standard. While the sandwich itself is good, I hated the fact that the my food was being prepared and the person who was preparing it, was not wearing a glove but I ate it anyway. Came in late at night after having a horrible experience at a nearby restaurant. I wasn't expecting much since it is a chain and it was almost 1AM (they close at 2.) But... I was hungry (starving actually) after travelling 5000 miles and I wanted to eat something, anything, at this point. I was very nicely surprised. I ordered falafel and fries. The falafel was great. I mean stellar. They were tender and soft inside but also nice and crunchy on the outside. The flavor was great and the pita they came in was even good. Warm and fluffy. There are some basic toppings inside but there is bar where you can add other items. Some of them are freaking insanely delicious. Not only do the items look fresh but the taste it as well. There are also a lot of sauces to choose from. I will say I had a lot of fries in this trip and the ones here are pretty much in a tie for 1st place. My only compliant is that we don't have a Maoz in Las Vegas. read more

Every time I come to Amsterdam, I come here to get my Maoz Falafel. Amsterdam is the birthplace of Maoz, and I was lucky enough to stumble by chance on this Quick Service Maoz Falafel back in 2006. I've been to Amsterdam three times, and each time I always come back. The delicious crunchiness of the crispy, golden-brown falafel accompanied by unlimited salad-bar with different delightful sauces like Tsitziki and garlic mayo really accompany well with the crunchy brown balls of pure vegetarian nirvana. I'm normally a meat-eater, but I'd probably turn vegetarian if I could have Maoz every day. It's just that DELICIOUS. Who ever knew that garbanzo beans would just be that tasty? Maoz makes their falafel freshly + deep fried as you wait, unlike many establishments in America where their falafel are made earlier in the day and they just heat it up in the microwave. They are about 5 Euros--which is quite pricey for the American budget, but it was well worth it. The first time I had falafel was at Maoz back in 2006, and when I got my falafel sandwich and took my first bite, I thought I was in heaven. The mixture of textures--from the salad, the crunchy falafel, and the sauce was an interesting and pleasurable experience--that made me want to devour more and more of the sandwich. My experience made me love this place so much, that every time I went to Amsterdam (I went twice in 2006 and once in 2009), I ate falafel here! In 2006, I was pretty sad to know that Maoz wasn't readily available in the United States, but recently (and fortunately!) they have opened establishments in New York and San Francisco--so I've been able to get my Maoz fix back in the USA. Every time I go to a Maoz here in the U.S., I always reminisce back when I had my first Maoz falafel sandwich, and think to myself--it was all because of this little Quick Service stand that got me hooked. We had ordered 3 falafel meals and 2 salad boxes for the family. Although the meal was good but the man behind the register was not at all welcoming. We were standing in the queue and had ordered the food, while we were collecting our fries- the man started shouting please take your falafel sandwich "its ready" and our hands were full with fries and could not accommodate other things. He was very rude and unhygienic. Go to other Mao's branches- if you want to try this but do not try this one because of this guy's unpleasant behavior. The concept is good but the food is average and there is a health concern in my mind when I ate here: -The place is in the open with one bench as communal dining, pigeons go in as you sit there -The guy handling the food used his bare hands to handle raw food (prepare your pita) -The food is just left out in the open with no cover Other than that, this place serves vegetables in bins and falafels that go in a pita. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Judging by the atmosphere and the other reviews, it would appear as though Maoz is likely a respectable establishment during the day, with what look like fresh ingredients and good vegetarian products across the board. Having said that, they market their fries prominently, and I was pleased with what was rapid service and a friendly face at such an hour. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Again, €2,50 is a bargain even compared to the kebabs close by that will run you nearly twice that, and it's worth noting that my portion of fries wasn't insignificant. This wasn't enough to fill me up, and I did ended up getting a kebab later, but there was some good value here. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Good value, but a poor product. The fries? often limp in nature, greasy in taste, and inconsistently covered in a spicy mayo that would have been better utilized served on the side. It's not overly difficult to dish up decent fries, but it was clear that this was the bottom of the barrel to be served up before closing time. Yes, that's partially my own fault, but it's not an excuse for mediocrity. No Stars Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Whatever it is, it's delicious. Falafel was average. I got it in salad. It was decent; some good flavors, but too oily. I ordered an orange juice, which was very refreshing, as orange juice is. I finished it quickly, then asked for tap water. They refused to give me tap water... That annoyed me. The food is decently salty, so it kind of got difficult during the end. If I were to rate just the food, this place would get 4 stars, but the slowness of the people working there and the tininess of the place this loads of people all trying to eat at the same time does not make for the best eating experience. That being said, I am a fan of the place. The falafel is pretty good and like other falafel places there is a "free" salad bar with a bunch of different things to pile on to your sandwich or salad. Although I got the last falafel in the bowl on the counter it was still hot and tasted quite fresh. That is the good part about it being crowded, you know the food is freshly made. Maoz is a chain that serves falafel and fries and is pretty much a sure bet for healthy, and yummy food in Amsterdam. The falafel can be ordered with "white" or "brown" (whole wheat) bread, and comes with the "salad bar" which is a trip. You pile stuff on your falafel and then as you eat, go dump more sauces (garlic is amazing) and stuff on the falafel. They also sell french fries here that are better than those next door (the place has giant lines, but Maoz does not). So, you can get a vegetarian treat, and some classic Amsterdam french fries with mayo or curry sauce. Right on the main drag as you walk south from the train station. read more

Never heard of Maoz? Ten years from now everyone will know it. A healthy middle-eastern/vegetarian quick-service chain that is the best food value we found in Amsterdam. The falafel was great, first of all. You can get it in a pita OR in a to-go salad container... and then you hit the salad bar for toppings. This was the largest, freshest and overall BEST salad/toppings bar I've ever seen. Spiced carrots. Several sauces. Pickled this-and-that. Fantastic. And the best part is that you can load up as much of this fresh & healthy goodness as you want... all for around 5 Euro. Maoz has a winning formula. I stayed at the Flying Pig around the corner from here and ended up coming back to this place every day of my visit for an entire week, it was so good! Priced relatively inexpensive for the area, the falafel is cooked to order and piping hot fresh. The taste is out of this world! The toppings bar is somewhat small but everything is really fresh and the selection is good. I found it a little strange that they charge extra for hummus (practically a necessity with falafel) but have a tahini sauce or something similar for free. The only thing keeping this place from 5 stars is that it's such a tiny location that it can be hard to eat comfortably when it's busy, which is pretty much always as it's in a pretty bustling area on Dam central. There's only seating for about 8-9 people but there is a tiny area near the register where you can also stand and eat. It was always pretty cramped every time I went but I wasn't going to let such a small inconvenience keep me from coming back for more tasty falafel! read more

The falafel here is better than what I ate when I lived in Jerusalem. The main selling point is the unlimited toppings and the fries. I really love the cilantro sauce and garlic sauce on my falafel, and my favorite sauce for the fries is spicy mayo, since that's the same stuff they put on spicy tuna sushi. The food was ok but not worth getting yelled at over fries. The customer service was atrocious (I never use this word but damn those guys are in the wrong business). How horrendous was the service? Well the cashier, a 30-something year old with thinning hair and a giant bald spot was so rude. He looked miserable like he really hated his job. I would get annoyed too if I worked in a area with heavy traffic full of tourists and families. Anyways, he was being asked a million questions from a family in front of us and was multitasking as well. To fair, he was being overworked and probably had a moment, but still, you don't take it out on customers. We ordered fries too with our 2 pitas but he didn't hear us (apparently he never heard the order) after we only said that we wanted no mayo or ketchup repeatedly. When we asked him about the fries, he yells at us saying "you only paid 9.95 and you got no fries." When we said we did order fries, he got confrontational and started arguing with us. We left not wanting him to kill our vibe. Advice: SKIP THIS OVERCROWDED PLACE AND THE RUDE SERVICE THAT CAN POTENTIALLY RUIN YOUR DAY/TRIP. Mediocre falafel for lunch on my way to the train station back in January 2013. Maoz is a chain so at least you know what you are getting.

The Falafel itself is not the best, but still good. The interesting part, which was new to me, was the open salad bar. When you order a falafel (5 euros for normal size), they will give you a pita filled with falafel balls, then you can choose other salads and sauces to fill the rest. You can re-fill it with salad again. Different options, flavors, sauces are available. Every thing is vegetarian. The place is not totally clean, but still okay, as it is literally a fast food. You can go there, and 10 min later you'll be done with your meal. I even consider it as a tourist attraction, as you usually don't see open salad bars for sandwiches.
