Still a two star review…read more... The San Marcos Farmers Market is on Friday night now. I think it was on Tuesday night before.... It's on North City Drive and that part of the street is closed. It's completely pedestrian friendly, so one star for that. There's live music, plenty of food stands, jewelry stands, handmade things, local arts, etc. As my partner and I strolled the entire thing in less than 15 minutes, we both agree...this isn't a farmer's market. A farmer's market has stands and stands of fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, even locally produced jams, honey, etc. This had TWO stands and what they offered was very limited. Now, if the city of San Marcos called this anything but a Farmer's Market, this would easily be a 5 star review. Music, food trucks, family friendly, local vendors, Wynston ice cream right there...it's a great way to end the week/start the weekend. But to call it a Farmer's Market? No way...it's quite a stretch. Two stars.

The checkout is simple and fast and self-checkout is available. So, what I've found is that many of the products are from Europe - which means higher standards and less junk within your ingredients. The chocolate I've bought here is SO much better than our chocolate. Probably because they're from Germany or Italy. Yummy! Also, if you need items for your charcuterie board this is the place to fill up! There's a ton of wonderful cheeses from around the globe, various crackers etc to choose from as well as a good assortment of fruits. And they're priced unbelievably well! Check it out.

It's organized well and very clean and keeps shelves stocked well. I also love that this is one of the few places that has self-check out (only open before 7 pm) I learned that they close it at 7 pm because there's a high rate of theft- so sad! Also have to say that Aldi is stepping up its game when it comes to variety and the quality. Their meat section now offers a decent selection and their produce is always fresh. I do also like the wider selection of cheeses and spreads.

While I was waiting I realized the fruit he wanted was not the one I had asked for so I kindly asked for the order to be corrected (before they had started on my order) and the lady seemed upset and dealt with it with an attitude. As I was looking in my cup after some of the ice cream had melted down I saw 2 hairs inside the ice cream. I assume it was blended in the ice cream. They were not wearing hair nets when preparing the orders but they should at least be cautious and wear them when preparing the ice cream batches. Very gross not going back.

On the side they are selling Christmas trees these days as well. I used to stop by here to pickup berries now and then but on this trip found that they were carrying Old Town bread and spotted the jalapeño and cheese bread so I grabbed a loaf. Great little farmers stand on the border of Encinitas and Carlsbad.

I lived on and tended to 3/4 acres and hardly bought any produce the entire time I was there...I composted and grew squash, oranges (fertilized with fish if you can believe it), figs, lemons, and 6 raised beds...and a ton of herbs in my greenhouse window; I highly recommend mint, scallions, cilantro, and basil for every kitchen...it's easy, economical...and nothing beats that fresh flavor and not having to go grocery shopping to prepare dinner! I also taught my cousin's kids to garden. They are big fans of my three favorite flowers to start kids on gardening: snapdragons (they love to squeeze the sides so that the mouth opens and closes), cosmos (these are drought resistant and self-seeding), and forget-me-nots (who wouldn't love a bouquet of these friendly flowers?). Additionally snapdragons do not require digging into dirt to start...they only need to be sprinkled onto dirt and two weeks of direct sunlight...how easy is that?! If you collect the snapdragon seeds you can start more seedlings...and snapdragons bloom twice a year... I could spend hours talking about organic gardening...I think I did when I met Madalaine at the Farmer's Market...it's healthy, local, and actually tastes better...go green, local, and organic San Diegans!

Being form Europe, I am sad I didn't go there earlier! you can find a lot of imported goodies at a very reasonable (not to say 'cheap') price. I appreciate the pre-made charcuterie boards you can quickly grab on your way to a winery :) A plus for the veggie's prices and freshness. Place is understaffed, looks old, there is no service but it's clean and properly stocked. Conveniently located next to the Walmart and across Trader Joe's. Don't forget a quarter for your shopping cart.
