Thursday morning around 2:00 AM. I went to Dignity Health's emergency room in excruciating pain, so severe I was dry heaving. They performed a CT scan and quickly diagnosed me with an 8mm kidney stone, which is too large to pass naturally. They also found blood in my urine because the stone was damaging my kidney. The doctors at urgent care said I needed surgery ASAP. When I tried to contact my urologist, his answering service said he was on vacation. So, I had no choice but to go to the hospital as an emergency visit.
I arrived at Mercy Medical in Gilbert at 7:30 AM, gave them the CT report, and they supposedly scheduled me for a lithotripsy procedure at 2:00 PM with their on-staff urologist. Lithotripsy uses sound waves to break up the stone. I spent the next several hours in the emergency room waiting, with occasional oxycodone (not nearly enough) to manage the pain.
At 2:00 PM, they had me sign all the release forms, but by 3:00 PM, there was no sign of the doctor. Instead, the assistant to my urologist, Dr. Eisenberg, showed up. He wasn't there to do the surgery but to perform a completely different procedure which I did not know anything about: inserting a stent and Dr Eisenberg would remove it later next week. Dr. Eisenberg, who was on vacation, sent his assistant to intervene and cancel the my scheduled lithotripsy just so he does not lose the sale. That is total crap! Stents are typically used after stone removal and are usually painful. This type of procedure is unnecessary and not recommended in my case.
Dr. Eisenberg is all about the money, frequently suggesting unnecessary procedures for the sake of profit (at least that has been my experience). If I had followed his advice, I would have ended up paying for the operating room, anesthesiologist, and staff twice, enduring pain all the while. Even the nurses were shocked by his suggestion. I told him to leave and I refused his proposal of course.
I left the hospital because the original doctor was now no longer available. So, I'm at home over the weekend with blood in my urine, unbearable pain, and no medication. Thanks a lot, Dignity Health. It's late Friday, and all the doctors are at the bar counting their stolen money.
Why does incompetence seem to follow me? From machinists to doctors and the terrible US healthcare system, it's relentless. I'm seriously considering a flight to Thailand, where millions of frustrated Americans go for healthcare. read more
