He makes you feel as if you're his only patient taking whatever time is needed to answer any questions and keep you informed of the treatment plans. My husband came to the center unable to walk because of spine surgery and with a diagnosis of a blood disorder.  As a result of Dr. Thorpe's thoroughness, it turned out that there was no blood disorder.  The usual blood tests provided inaccurate results. The physical and occupational therapists were equally caring and skilled. The therapies had him walking and slowly becoming self sufficient. The nursing care cannot be praised enough.They were always responsive to his needs and often checked in just to see how he was doing. Our care navigator, Ms. Enitan Macarthy worked to maintain quality care and made the transition home seamless. We owe a debt of gratitude to the entire staff for getting my husband functioning well enough to come home.

I was in extreme pain so I went to an orthopedic center where they took X-rays and found that my shoulder was completely shattered. my husband went back to their emergency room and got copies of the original X-rays. The orthopedic surgeon looked at the X-rays and told us that the emergency room doctor could not have possibly looked at the X-rays. I needed my shoulder completely rebuilt in major surgery. if I had known how severe the injury was I would have seen a real doctor sooner. I will never go to an Adventist hospital again.

I was hospitalized after chemotherapy treatment for Leukemia from April 20th of this year until May 11th . . . a "fall risk" and still suffering "de-conditioning" because of being in bed 3 weeks in the hospital. On May 11th, became a resident at Arcola until June 4th. Many an early morning I found myself in the public area [day room] and the nurses would be coming on duty for the changing of the shifts. There was such a spirit of cheerfulness and brotherhood/sisterhood that I couldn't help but be encouraged as I was reading and enjoying those quiet times in the early morning. No, it wasn't just a professional "have a great day" kind of perfunctory cheerfulness . . . it was an inner rejoicing borne in a spiritual realm . . . (I am confident of that) . . . I came yesterday with a friend to visit my former roommate, and others, and that same "spirit" was evident among the nurses and staff. One nurse encouraged a friend of mine who was wheelchair bound when I last saw him in June --but now able -- walking with a walker--with difficulty, yes, but having made much progress. There was a very real sense that the encouragement of the residents by the nursing staff was deeply and sincerely felt by those nurses. I know, first hand, I was a resident! And I returned to see my roommate and others I had built a relationship with. I know that the Spirit of Christ was-- and is-- there at Arcola. Good place . . .

When it was time for my mother to be discharged from the hospital I was given the usual list of…read moreavailable rehab/nursing facility. It was right before the 4th of July weekend and I called seven places on that list, only to have two call me back. One was Julia from Althea Woodland Nursing Home & Rehabilitation, not only did she call me back and invite me to visit the facility, but she also went to the hospital to visit my mother. (That spoke volumes to me). She took the time to assess my mother's and my needs and or expectations. Julia made all arrangements with the hospital for my mother's arrival and they allowed me to come in prior to set-up her room. Due to the fact that this was my mother's third visit to a nursing facility....since she had her stroke two years ago. And the other two experiences were horrible!!! (night terrors; bed sores, laying in vomit, wet for hours, informed of her discharge date the day of her discharge). I knew firsthand the only way to see true facility (minus the smoke and mirrors) was to visit my mother all times of the day and in the middle of the night... And due to prior experiences, sometimes I just needed to lay my eyes on her!!!! I found the staff at Althea Woodland to be warm, welcoming and informative. The staff never portrayed themselves as if this was just a job and they were there to do their eight and hit the gate. The facility was always clean free of urine smell on both floors even were the permanent residents resided. If you rang the bell and there was going to be a wait, someone from the nursing staff came in to advise the reasoning for the wait or to see if the situation could wait. The phone was always answered and/or phone calls were always returned in a timely fashion. Whenever a doctor's appointment was made for my mother a member of the staff always accompanied her. Other rehab/nursing facility sent my mother alone with the transportation driver and I was never even informed that she was leaving the facility! The activity staff at Althea Woodland always had something going on, not just a colorful calendar of events. I personally witnessed residents' in the hallway going to the multipurpose room, residents' playing cards, listening to music, cook outs and bedtime rituals. My mother informed me of ice cream socials, movie nights, pizza parties and all types of religious services. My mother was at Althea Woodland for a little less than ninety days for rehab. They're rehab department was amazing, my mother is now strong enough to transfer to a chair and sit up for hours without complaint or pain. To see my mother regain some mobility and her confidence is AMAZING!!!! We furthermore found that the confusion did come from her stoke, but from her inability to get the air out of her lungs, causing CO2 build-up in her body. At the other two facilities I had to visit my mother daily to insure her well-being and daily she cried when I had leave her...At Althea Woodland my mother insured me that she was ok so I didn't have to visit her daily. My mother was so well taken care of that she cried when she had to leave!!!! She may not remember everyone's name, red head, honey roasted peanuts, pony tail, ladybug, short guy, bib guy and list goes on. Yet she speaks of them all with such fondness. I 'am truly grateful to the Woodland crew for taking care of the person who took care of me!!

The staff to resident ratio is alarming and something the state should look into. I was there for a couple of hours and honestly seen only one nurse(?)/attendant and one person cleaning. The wait to enter the facility is lengthy. No one answers the bell, the residents have to see you at the door and yell to someone that someone is at the door. It's a sad state of affairs the care or lack thereof rendered to our oldest and neediest population. This place is marginally better than some of the others that service this demographic but that's not saying much. This place is better than being on the street, I suppose.

Honestly, though, if you have the funds to go somewhere else, do. On my one visit there, the staff was overworked and distracted, which manifested itself as an uncaring response to my concerns about a patient. It was a serious concern involving the medication schedule which, in the patient's case, directly impacted the health as there was potential for the patient to suffer severely because of the inordinate amount of time between the medication and a substantive meal. The response from staff when I explained the issue was to let the patient 'eat crackers', and that the patient had to wait until the 'dining' service rounds caught up to that part of the building - which was almost another hour -- was not well received by me, and should be a very real concern to those in charge, if there is someone in charge, since the person on that medication is supposed to eat within 30 minutes of taking it. The attitude and approach screams liability! On my one visit, it did not appear that there was anyone in charge in a meaningful way - the staff was shouting back and forth in the corridors continually where the patients were located, and the whole scene appeared chaotic. The staff I encountered both in person and on the phone were terse and harried, annoyed, and disparaged. Poor staffing resources and seeming lack of supervisory structure appear to have bred the environment I encountered. The building tries to promote an open and light-bathed atmosphere, but the chaos inside complete detracts from the externals. The 2 stars rating is generous. I offer it because it was a one-off visit.

Very concerning experience serious issues with care, communication, and basic patient dignity…read more My mother was admitted to Complete Care at Springbrook for rehabilitation with the goal of regaining strength and mobility so she could safely return home. Unfortunately, our experience has been extremely disappointing and concerning. From the time she arrived, she received little to no meaningful physical therapy to help her stand, walk, or rebuild strength. Instead, she spent long periods confined to bed without a clear rehabilitation plan, which completely defeats the purpose of a rehab admission. She also suffered significant pain related to a catheter for several days. Despite repeatedly reporting discomfort, no proper reassessment or intervention was done. Staff continued to say the catheter could not be removed because it came from the hospital, yet no one appeared to evaluate whether it was still medically necessary. A required urology follow up was delayed until family members personally intervened and scheduled the appointment ourselves. The appointment was completed immediately once the correct process was followed. Communication throughout the facility has been extremely poor. Staff provided conflicting information, voicemails are constantly full, and it is nearly impossible to reach anyone when you need answers. When you do ask questions, many staff members respond with noticeable attitude instead of professionalism or concern. Basic patient care and hygiene were also alarming. I personally witnessed a nurse spill urine while emptying my mother's catheter bag and then cover her with the same wet sheets instead of immediately changing them. No patient should be left lying in urine soaked bedding. This shows a serious lack of dignity and proper care. Additionally, something as simple as wipes is consistently unavailable. When families ask for basic supplies, staff often act inconvenienced or irritated. Overall, this experience reflects major problems with care coordination, pain management, communication, and respect for patients. Families should not have to fight this hard just to ensure their loved one receives basic attention and humane treatment. I hope management takes these concerns seriously and makes meaningful improvements so other families do not have the same experience.

Don't…read moreever get me wrong they have a beautiful little rehab area with glass walls, that when you enter the facility you think right away that you have a chance to get stronger and therapy that you desperately need. It's all lies. They put you on a bike for 10 minutes the most, and nothing else. I needed to practice the steps so I can navigate them at home, that was never an option. They dismiss your concerns, and most of the staff has such an attitude. They look through you as if you don't exist, their whole job is to help you get healthier and stronger. The food is disgusting, as well as the Cockroaches not only in the room but in the shower area. It looks clean for the most part. There was a charge nurse that was very kind, that lived in Brooklyn for a while and really helped me out. Also there was Solana who was the only one that really cared about me. You could tell her heart was in it. Everybody else, needs some sensitivity training
