It's taken me a number of years to actually write this review. I bought a groom's package (for my fiancée) way back in September 2013. Unfortunately, the wedding was cancelled 2 days before the event. When I called to cancel the package with Mankind, the woman on the phone promptly told me that because I prepaid, they could not refund my money, even though I was was within the cancellation timeline. No acknowledgement of anything else, no apology for not being able to cancel the package, nothing. I had to cancel many services that day and every business, EXCEPT Mankind, was actually kind - they all had empathy, spoke to me with care and bent over backwards to help. The salon I booked for myself even offered free services to me. Mankind mailed me the credit from the package without a even a note - they just slapped the card in in a plain white envelope. It sat in my drawer for many years (because who was going to use it?!). Fast forward years later, in a pandemic where a bit of kindness goes a long way, I still think about them. This business has sadly and unnecessarily etched itself into a bad memory. I hope their customer service and empathy for others has grown over the years since this incident. read more

I've been coming to Mankind for well over a year now to get my haircuts for the simple reason that I love the unwavering attention to detail that has remained consistent throughout all my visits. The staff here is very pleasant, and you will even become acquainted with the owner's pup that loves to wander around the shop keeping everyone company! The place is always very clean, and there is chilled water for those waiting for their appointments. From the moment I step foot in Mankind, I feel comfortable and welcome. Since my barber left the Yonge and Eglinton area I was searching for a new go-to place in the area for my bi-weekly haircut. Mankind is so conveniently located that I entertained the idea that $50 every two weeks was justifiable. Booking an appointment is easy; you can either call or do it online. I called in and specifically asked if their barber can do a bald fade. The receptionist said yes and I was booked for that evening. Upon arrival (I was on time), there was still a wait of five to ten minutes. The environment is great and has a lounge feel to it. It doesn't scream 'bro' at you. Unfortunately for me, that's where the praise ends. I just wanted a haircut, but here that entails getting a hand wax treatment and a mini-facial beforehand. I asked my barber afterward if I can just get a cut without the frills, and he said he hasn't seen that happen. What if I'm in a rush or am on my lunch break? Sometimes a guy just wants to get his hair did. I asked the barber again before he started his work whether or not he was capable of doing a bald fade. After reassuring me he could, he started and I could immediately tell that I wasn't going to get the cut I wanted. I didn't interrupt because if he did actually know how to do it, he would've done it. There was no point in teaching the barber how I wanted my hair done if he wasn't capable of doing so. I didn't get anything close to a bald fade and my hairline looked ridiculous, which I only noticed when I got home. I contemplated taking a razor and just shaving my entire head. When I paid for the haircut the owner (I think) asked about my experience. I told her it wasn't what I expected and she was very apologetic. She even offered my a free haircut to fix it. I initially accepted the free offer, but thought better of it a few days later and cancelled. It wasn't worth the risk. I went back to my old barber who is now in Scarborough days later to get my hair fixed. He laughed at my hair before fixing it. Everyone at the shop is friendly, I will have to give them that. The service is outstanding, but the work I got was below average. Maybe I'll try some of their other services, but to be honest there are a ton of options in the Yonge and Eglinton area for facials (Pure + Simple) or manicures (any Vietnamese place that charges a fraction of the price) if you are really interested in those things. Based on my experience, if you're looking to get a fade or something similar, I can't recommend this place for the quality of work and the price. read more

First visit here today. Online booking? Yes! Turn up, great vibe, offered water before my hair cut. The atmosphere is great, everyone is friendly. Christina was friendly, polite and engaging. The cut itself. Awesome. My previous barber was a bit lack lustre, but these guys actually give a crap. Got the "alpha male package". Never had a hand massage before, but hey... I am worth it ;) Cost, on the pricey side, but for me it was worth it and I will make this my new regular. This place is not your $20 buzz cut barbershop and the serivce and hair cut showed. Simply put; don't think the hairdresser deserved the $45 for the haircut I received. She asked if I wanted the extra frills with the minimum "haircut package". I asked if it could be deducted and she said no, so I said she may as well do it! Completely felt she was almost annoyed at this point. Now I'm a nice guy. She was a nice person. But for $45 you expect a little bit extra in a haircut than you would at a place that charges $25. Simply didn't receive my money's worth. Nothing explicitly wrong with the haircut but definitely felt it was half-a. for at that price tag Looking for a higher skilled, less expensive place for my future haircuts. I have used both locations - Richmond and Yonge & Eg. Y&E is closer to home, and I prefer the experience there. I have always had a fantastic experience there. I'm not terribly fussy about my hair, but I go for more than just the haircut there. The stylist I trust and keep returning to is Athena - she always does wonderful things with my hair. She also does a great job with the paraffin and face towel. I can't really put my finger on what she does differently, but she makes the experience feel like you deserve to be treated that way, which is something I don't always feel when I'm receiving spa treatment. I also had the pleasure of having my first facial done there recently. I'm so sorry, I can't remember the girl's name at the moment, but it was a very pleasant experience. I've been coming here for 4 years. The experience is excellent, the haircuts rock, and the people are awesome. I come here for everything they offer, and I've been coming more and more frequently. My two boys are 9 & 11, and they've been coming for almost 2 years - and they're treated like family. I drive 27km once a month for the experience. Well I don't like being ripped off. And that's what this feels like. I really don't like being nickle and dimed. When I made the appointment, I was gonna do color (cover grey), and a cut.. All of a sudden, my cut was $5 more because they used clippers. ARE KIDDING ME. $5.00 more for a few swipes with clippers. And my color was 10$ because they did a little on the sides of my beard. So what was gonna be $60 bucks, turned in $78 for a final total of $96.00 Do you think I am a woman with a man's cash to spend? Hello...Get it right people or go home. I won't be back to the Eglinton location or any other location. Rude staff, after a lengthy conversation with "The Countess", the above still happened. What an awesome place. I was skeptical at first because it seems very cool, and sometimes i have been drawn in by the slick look to only get a sub par hair cut, However this is the real deal. If you're looking for that amazing haircut, even if you're not quite sure what it is, these guys can help. PLus i am a bearded gentleman, i use a straight razor and find most places have no clue on what to do with a beard,, after they groomed e up the wife told me i need to let them do it every time.. Got a haircut at Manking Grooming. Not impressed! The guy was nice but he totally screwed up my neckline. One side is rounded while the other one is a straight line that goes one inch higher then the other side, very weird. The worst neckline I had in years!! Including tips it cost me $60! Went here today for a last minute haircut. Walked in not really knowing what to expect but it had a good vibe right off the bat. HD TV in the waiting area hooked up to an Xbox 360 with chilled water and lime on the table. Someone must have been casually DJ'ing while they worked since the soundtrack was awesome. Lynn was my stylist and right away took me through the ropes since it was my first time. Wash and shampoo, plus hand and shoulder massages to start, and then the haircut. She worked with me to try and find a new cut. Worked out really well and am definitely going to go back and book again with her. Especially because of the complimentary touch up in two weeks. Can't recommend this place enough for someone who is tired of waiting in line at supercuts or Uncle Leo's Barbershop. read more

Squeezed in an appointment here, just in time before a job interview. Had a great experience, Connie was my stylist, super sweet and gorgeous to boot. The hand massage was great and the facial is better than expected. Guys you don't know what you're missing. It's like a "man cave" with beautiful women that cut your hair. Giving it a 4 out of 5 as I ordered the Alpha male package and was told that the hand wax was not working slightly disappointed, The head and hand massage was just ok felt a little rushed also did not get the hot towel as mentioned in the website. Went for a haircut here recently as I have been looking around for a new place to get my hair done. I've been going to a barber for a while and my wife suggested trying a salon. I managed to find this one online and made a reservation through their website (very easy to do and a great idea). First off, the decor of the place is pretty cool and masculine. You certainly don't feel like you're at a regular salon (which was great for a guy who was uncomfortable going to a salon to begin with). It was easy to find but parking is a bit of an issue since you have to find street parking. Secondly, the service was excellent. They make it a point to know your name and get to know you a bit. They had good suggestions for hair styles (I was looking to change my hair after years of having the same hair cut). They weren't pushy at all and really took their time during the appointment. Thirdly, the hair cut I got was pretty good. I wanted something different but not crazy. I think my stylist did a good job working with that. He was patient when we were trying to figure out what to do with my hair. Lastly, they offer a wide variety of services for men. I went with the "Alpha Male" which included a hand wax treatment and hot facial towel/cream application. Not usually my thing but something interesting to add to the mix I guess. Overall a great experience. It's nice to have a "salon" that caters to only men and makes you feel comfortable there. read more

Went in for MANicure, wax on wax off eyebrows and the alpha male haircut package. the whole thing took around 2 hours, 45 minutes of which were waiting at random points. When I arrived I was told to wait so they can setup. Didn't take more then 15 minutes. and they began my eyebrows. I was happy with the results and the lady was friendly, she then directed me to the nail bar for my MANicure. I must say, for the cost it is a horribly done MANicure. She spent roughly half an hour on my nails, but by the end, aside from them being shiny they weren't rounded, still jagged on the sides. and I was left with a hang nail on one of my fingers. After she said she was done. I was asked to wait in the waiting area for a spot to open up. I waited for 30minutes as the lady went on break to grab food, when she returned I was lead by another younger lady to get my hair washed. She was rather unprofessional, and did not seem to enjoy her job in any way, perhaps it was nearing the end of her shift and she was tired. After the shampoo I was directed to my stylist, his name was "Guy". He was Very friendly, sociable and professional. He gave an amazing haircut and a definite plus to the experience. After all was done I paid my bill and left. I must say for the price I will not be returning. For the service I cannot recommend this place to anyone. First off, it is a beautiful space, with some nice features. But as far as mens cuts go, very average. My stylist just did not listen. I gave her a photo of what I want , yet she gave me something completely different. I specifically told her I prefer to not use product but then she cut it so short that I now need to use product. I had hair down to my shoulders not i have a simple crew cut. Now I will need to grow it our and go back to cutting my own hair. Not only was my cut not reflective of what I asked her to do but she buzzed my neck so violently that I now have a rash. I suggest everyone to steer clear of Sissi, because I suspect she only knows one cut and no matter what you ask for that's what you will get. read more

Arranged to have the studio open on a Sunday to get my fiance (at the time) and best man's hair styled, shaves and manicures on the morning of our wedding. Charged a lot of money but we understood and agreed because they had to open up just for us. They tried to exploit my husband for more money 2 days before the big day thinking we wouldn't have any other options. Boy oh boy were they wrong. My husband was a long time customer from their other location who switched to this location (closer to home) and he has now told everyone he knows about their disgusting business practices. Worst. Haircut. Ever. My hair hadn't been long enough to warrant a proper cut for awhile so I thought I'd splurge a little and make it a good one. I waited 15 minutes for my stylist, despite being one of the first clients of the day -- she was just straight up late for work. She ended up cutting my hair with trimmers like my mom used to when I was 5...except my mom did a much better job. I have a bit of a widow's peak so the hair at my temples is a little further forward than the hairline just above it. For some INSANE reason she decided to shave the hair at my temples back to match the hairline above, leaving me with the most ridiculous, crash-helmet-looking haircut I've ever had. I literally let out a little gasp after she did it, thinking, "I have to walk around like this for at least a couple weeks before I even look remotely normal?!" Not to mention, it didn't occur to her that unless I literally shave my TEMPLES every day I'm going to have these little "arrows" of 5 o'clock shadow on my head?? I didn't say anything because words were not going to paste the hair back on my head and I didn't want to make a bad situation worse. I gagged a bit when I paid the $50 for this monstrosity.
