What really sets this place apart is the staggering variety of products they carry, all at fair prices. Fresh herbs? They have a wide variety. Same with fruits and veg. Mexican specialty products? They got them. Porcini mushrooms? Check. Whole wheatberries? Oh yeah. More bottles and jars of condiments and sauces than you could shake a stick at? Absolutely. All kind of nuts? They got them, too. The more you look around the more you find. The lines at the cash register get long sometimes, but they manage the trick of being both friendly and efficient, seeing to it the lines move quickly. During the day you'll spot local restaurant kitchen staff here stocking up on last minute produce needs. If all you're after is some limes, peppers, papaya or avocados their competition to the south of the market could save you a little dough. Essex Farm really shines when you're looking for something that's a little hard to find. Again and again they've surprised me by having exactly what I was looking for when I was about to give up hope. It's a good little grocery, and very good to have in the neighborhood.

I don't know when a bodega becomes a full-on grocery store, but this place is riding the line pretty hard. They have good beer. Good granola. Good coffee. Good, no-nitrite sausages. Fresh, quality produce. And you know Mr. Kiwi cares about what you put in your body, because he also stocks the organic and health-conscious stuff: Bell & Evans chicken. Several types of fake meat for the vegans. Ronnybrook Farms dairy. Wheatgrass shots. Pre-made salads that actually look good. A serious selection of Asian eats (noodles, kimchi, sushi, etc.). All the sauces, dressings, canned and packaged goods you might want...it's like Whole Foods up in here, with better prices. They give out samples and even have little pixie stix for the kiddies that are only a quarter. A surefire way to keep eager and excited that kids occupied while you make the rounds, lol. One of the farmers has tons of apples. Surprise , its New York state- but they also have apple cider and cider donuts which you can get plain or sugared. It's best if you go to them when the market first opens. That's when they're actually close to warm and tasty. Otherwise it's just dry and no amount of apple cider is going to help. For entertainment, there's usually a couple of bus game musicians. The last time I went there was a saxophonist and what sounded like a Appalachian fiddling group.
