Our 85 year old, 93lb., insulin dependent mother who suffers from mid-stage Alzheimer's unknowingly had a UTI when we placed her here and became confused and agitated. She hit one of the workers twice. We knew this was out of character for her so we sent her to the hospital where she was admitted for IV antibiotics. We were told that we needed 1:1 care which was provided by an agency they recommended. We then placed her on anti-psychotic meds to hopefully stop episodes of agitation. She was given 3 different medications which resulted in low BP and pulse, lethargy which resulted in syncopal episodes. I was not informed of the 1st incident. The second incident happened while I was there. When we asked the workers for the nurse, we were told that he was on the Assisted Living side and the didn't know how to reach him as he didn't answer the walkie-talkie. There were several times where a nurse was unavailable as they were on the AL side. Towards the end of the month, the nursing director stated that we would start tapering the 1:1 care and transition her to their care as there were no further episodes of hitting. Unfortunately, she developed a second UTI and again became agitated and confused. It was reported to me that she hit someone again and we were then told that due to her frequent UTI's secondary to her anatomy and her colitis, we would need to provide 1:1 care indefinitely 3 days prior to the end of the month. It cost us $16,000.00 for the one month in 1:1 care coupled with the $6,500.00/month for their fees. Of course, they know that no one can afford such exorbitant costs on a sustained basis. The man in the next room has been yelling and screaming out frequently and his wife had to find a new place for him. Most of the food was less than appetizing. When they served fish which my mother does not eat, they offered her such foods as hot dogs despite having discussed her dietary needs at our intake interview. This happened frequently. The facility is quite dated with small rooms. The A/C units are antiquated wall units which are loud and kick on and off all day and night. They supposedly fixed this issue when I complained, however, it was not rectified which frequently woke my mother at night. The patio was full of leaves and unkept. The hallways smell of urine and feces. My advice if you are considering a place for your loved one is to avoid Atria Park at St. Joseph's, although they advertise being a Memory Care for Dementia/Alzheimer's patients, if your loved exhibits or develops any of the normal/frequently seen adverse/negative behaviors, look elsewhere.

During this short span we have had three directors - 1 being interim. That director was very instrumental in organizing and handling our evacuation to Orlando during the 2019 hurricane predicament. No one has had to face such a dynamic challenge as our present director: Frances Scogna. COVID-19!! Frances is so concerned about us the residents and staff. Being an enormously talented leader who looks further down the road, she leads us in a very personable, professional manner. Through her constant communication with residents, staff, and family members, she keeps us well informed of where we are, actions taken, and what to expect in the future. She is assertive when necessary, very honest, dedicated, and possesses a positive attitude that has built a culture of mutual trust in all of us. Frances's primary focus in the well-being of all the residents and staff of Atria Park of St. Joseph's. We are blessed."

Tequesta Terrace is a beautiful facility. From the moment you pull up and park, you see that this property is well taken care of. The building looks more like a hotel; nothing about it- to me- screams institution. The front desk is always staffed by a smiling, welcoming woman, and I've spent time more than once in the comfortable waiting area/communal living room it opens onto. No matter what, I'm entering into a depressing situation- a loved one in a nursing home; thus, I appreciate even more the very non-depressing entrance! TT decorates heavily for most holidays. This gives the building a homey feel. The staff in the memory care wing have almost always been pleasant, with an easy smile for a visitor. This is so important; these staff members have a very trying and probably depressing job. Residents pass away constantly and only enter this wing in dire decline. I have witnessed staff at lesser facilities openly abuse residents verbally and physically; I can't imagine this happening here. I've visited at all times of the day, weekdays and weekends. I'm not saying that I see everything or that every staff person is perfect: I have had my share of frustrations with various details. I have also seen staff exhibit extreme patience and care for both residents and their concerned loved ones. I hope this means that staff here are paid justly for the work they do. The staff knows right away who I am visiting and where to find him. I find this surprising and endearing. Walking into the memory care wing, the spacious opening room opens with a grand piano, bookcase, and living room furniture. The memory care wing surrounds a beautiful, private courtyard with benches, tables and chairs, a fountain, and lovely landscaping. This space has been my saving grace. Although most residents aren't able to access this space on their own (due to memory reasons), it provides a wonderful space to interact with my loved one and give him fresh air and sunlight. The church bells from the Catholic Church nearby ring often. Lizards run everywhere, protected from predators. I wish they would plant butterfly plants and put up bird-feeders, to attract more wildlife, but in general it is a lovely space. When I first began visiting, I was always impressed with TT's ability to keep the wing smelling pretty good. It isn't always this way, but 75% of the time it smells ok. This is not easy task, to say the least. The main room where the residents spend most of their time has vaulted ceilings and skylights; it feels very open. I do think it is too small for all the residents. To fit everyone in, residents must sit next to each other, which causes problems, and there is very little space for walkers or wheelchairs to move freely, which is disappointing considering it is no small task for a resident to move about independently, let alone navigate around feet and walkers and furniture. I am hoping the staff will address this overcrowding soon. I am so grateful that my loved one is safe and well take care of. It is the best I could hope for in this situation (Alzheimer's). Thank you, Tequesta Terrace.

My mother absolutely loves her apartment and she loves living there! She has made friends quickly and always has a friend (or new friend) to have dinner with each night. And we have joined her for dinner several times and the food is upscale and delicious! We especially like the cocktail hour each night in their bar area. I love that there are two restaurants to choose from and there are new specials every night. There are also plenty of fun, interesting shows, activities and exercise classes for her to participate in. She enjoys regular transportation to Publix, the mall, or a doctors appointment. In addition, the grounds and community center are so beautiful and peaceful. A special shout out to many of the wonderful staff members: First our initial contact Lonnie Ehmann who shared her time and talent and layed the foundation for our initial visits. Fabulous Kim Mancini, Yolanda, and Vivianna all made my mom's transition seamless and comfortable. Stephanie, Jennifer and all the wait staff at the Waterfront dining are so gracious and outstanding! The list goes on and on - I really can't say enough about all the staff at La Posada!! There is incredible comfort and peace-of-mind knowing that she is well cared for and that there are systems in place to check on her well being. The aides, housekeeping staff, and nurses & most of the therapy staff are more professional than the administrative staff. However, lower level staff can only be as professional as the training and resources allow. For example, if the staff has to be in the dining room assisting residents who dine there that means without adequate staff, the patients who need the most care in their rooms will not get there calls for help answered. The hallways will be deserted. When you get that call from your loved one that they've been waiting 20 minutes for help. The administrative staff consists of a director, an executive director who did not respond to phone messages until corporate office was contacted, a Case Manager who says she's there to help however imo she's there to help the administration. Staff including Director, Case Manager, some therapy staff need training on HIPAA laws so that when a resident says they want/need family/friend to help make decision decisions, their mistaken or intentional response should not be you are competent & can make your own decisions & not act inappropriately to block family advocating for patient who objects to improper staff behavior. The director of therapy is a speech therapist although they say there's a physiatrist there was none. The billing department person did not respond to a request for a itemized list of charges that would be submitted to the insurance company. Don't expect to get any or much service if you're if you're in your room during meal . In the room my loved one was in , the call button is that is a push button at the end of the cord. It's like the end of a window blind cord with the actual button that you need to press at the bottom so difficult for the patient will know they properly pushed it . Patient doesn't know whether it's working or not and nobody is showing up .The light that indicates it's on is on the wall behind their head and that they are medically unable to turn around they will never know if by push pushing the button someone heard their call for help. Until a complaint was registered with the state, I didn't even realize that they have a intercom system where someone should be coming on and saying "can I help you? How can I help you?" imagine if there was an emergency and you're waiting 20 minutes without assurance that they heard you ? Only after addressing this concern with the agency for healthcare administration, did this system start to be used however, still it was only used when someone was staffing the nursing station to specifically answer those calls . Impossible to reach the facility doctor that automatically is assigned to see patients there. In addition to being able to address medical concerns about your loved one , it's important Important because you need to know what he's gonna say about patient's discharge if anything. During an appeal process it's best to get your own doctors to support your discharge concerns, if you feel your loved one is being told that Medicare won't pay for any further therapy or nursing. Know your rights involving right of family members to be consulted. If patient gives permission they will try to claim the HIPAA does not allow it even if the patient wants it. Make sure you get access to the electronic records portal immediately. The admissions folder does not contain information on where you can contact someone if you have a complaint or concern outside of the facility. Make sure you monitor for accuracy in patient's progress, especially in therapy . Ask for therapy notes every week because you won't find them in the patient's portal . Know your discharge rights. If you have a grievance and it is not responded to timely, go directly to the corporate office if you experience a problem that is not resolved by the staff on the premises. https://www.lifespacecommunities.com/contact/ The brochure that the sales person hands you when you visit the facility in advance of putting your loved one thereIt's connected to a retirement community where they will send the residents to their Skilled Nursing Facility. Lots of them are up in age, and they don't seem to have many local if any family members to advocate for them. One such lady who had no family members I could not leave her room independently was asking for her missing phone repeatedly for a week, yet it does not appear. Anyone made an attempt to locate it. The admissions package claims says facility has a physiatrist it didn't. Facility admits non Waterford apts residents from hospitals. Nursing Director put false information into patient's chart about family member. So make sure you go into the electronic record frequently and read the notes. If you try to address, legitimate concerns they will try to make you look like the problem.
