Unfortunately one of the worst dining experiences we've had in a while. We were seated around 6:35 and did not receive our entrees until around 8pm. We did have the bruschetta/garlic bread combo as an appetizer, which was OK, pretty standard but nothing to rave about. We were seated towards the back of the second room and there was a strong draft, so our feet were freezing the whole time. The biggest disappointed, though, was the actual meal. We would have totally discounted the wait time if the food was outstanding, but what we got was less than mediocre. I had the Penne Alla Matriciana, which tasted like boxed pasta with canned tomatoes. The "sauce" was watery with very little flavor and had a tinny taste, as if it were from a can. At first I thought they had forgotten to add the pancetta, but realized there were teeny tiny chunks of meet that were too small to even grab with my fork. My fiancé had the spaghetti bolognese, a second choice as they had run out of meetballs, and had the same issue where the sauce was thin and overall lacked flavor. The kicker, which i will admit is more of a personal pet peeve, was how they were still playing Christmas music three weeks after the holiday. read more

We went to Mangia for the first time on Friday for my mom's birthday. I had read rave reviews about the place and we were going to a concert at the Verizon Wireless Arena that night so we thought it would be the perfect time to try it out. The reviews did not lie! We LOVED that it was BYOB as we were able to bring our favorite wine and champagne :) The service was great and we did not have a long wait for our food to come out! Everyone very much enjoyed their dishes, the only critiques I would give is that the meatballs were a little drier than I usually like and it was a little harder to find than I thought it would be. Excellent Italian cuisine, would do well in Boston's North End. I had the Veal Gusto, absolutely delicious. My wife had the Chicken Cacciatore which is a standard but done very well here. My only knock on the place is that there is very little parking and no online reservations. You have to leave a message to get a reservation but they were very friendly and helpful when they called back. The waitstaff had been iffy in the past. Seems like mostly high school kids with little to no experience. The food takes a long time (which they do tell you beforehand). The food however, is amazing. We did think the service was slow as was the delivery for our meals - but once we got our meals we were blown away. We have been back multiple times and have never had a bad meal here. I really really enjoyed this little restaurant. My (adult) son and I were looking for a late dinner on a Wednesday night, which can be difficult. I think we arrived after 8:30. We were quickly greeted and showed a table for two. We asked for one of the larger tables which they happily accommodated. Large glasses of ice water was served quickly. Pity they are BYOB as I would have loved a glass of wine. But no matter. The menu didn't have Veal Parmesan which I had anticipated ordering. But I saw veal on the menu and also chicken parm, so I had confidence they would substitute. That's when the server described their willingness to cook basically anything you want. We shared a salad and tho there was a lot of dressing, it was heavy on the olive oil which really is the right balance. Garlic bread was served. One inch thin slices lightly toasted. Delicious. The meal took what seemed to be a while, but just when it seemed it might be too long, the food arrived. Wow, I have to say it was a superb version of the dish. What was notable was their sauce which was heavily flavored with roasted garlic cloves. I love roasted garlic and it was a positive addition. The restaurant mixes the pasta into the dish's sauce which works really well. I will say that the amount of penne in this dish was modest, but truth be known most Americans eat too much, and the amount of veal was generous, and the veal itself was succulent and flavorful. Oh, and even throw we were the last patrons of the night and I'm sure the staff was ready to go home, there was never a moment when I felt as if they wished we'd hurry up and leave. That's the way it should be, and I was grateful. I'm in town to be near a relative who is hospitalized so my schedule is inconsistent but I definitely will return within the week! A couple of complaints: the waitress was being monitored as she was in training. She did fine but when she came to take our order I had no idea what she was saying. Quite honestly I thought she was speaking to us in Italian! Second critique: I thought the server who greeted us was a bit long winded in her explanation of how the restaurant works. Whew! Tighten up on the explanation and if people have questions, they'll ask. But overall the food was excellent and the atmosphere is cozy and charming. Reminded me of trattorias in Italy I've been to. And it was smart of them to decorate the outside of the restaurant so it is more noticeable. It's in an unassuming part of town and without the charming lighting and awnings, if you were unfamiliar with the area you might just drive right by and not take a chance. Very nice place, reasonable prices for the good home-cooked food you get. I had linguini clams, and my husband had futuccini alfredo, and the sauce was divine. I subtracted one star for the difficulty carrying on a conversation with the other couple we were with, due to the cackling, shrieking blonds at the table for six that were there on 10/2/15. I know it's not the restaurant's fault, but they did nothing to try to quiet them down. Also, i ordered a desert and so did my husband, but they only brought his. Emphasis here is on the quality of the meal. In a party of 14, everyone loved the appetizers and entrees'. Probably not the best place to come with young children....the wait for home cooked meals is significant. And, the wait staff has to come up with a better way to serve a large table......they had a single waiter delivering two meals at a time to a large table.....very slow process, and by the time all were served, those first served either were finished eating or had cold meals waiting. Just went for the first time last night, and we will definitely be going back! Our server Lisa was so friendly and personable, knew about everything on the menu and answered all of our questions perfectly. Started with garlic bread and bruschetta, incredible. Neither of us even like bruschetta but we finished the whole plate. Entrees we got the fettuccine alfredo with chicken & the cheese ravioli. Both absolutely amazing! All the food is made to order. BYOB is not something you see a lot in New Jersey, so this was pretty exciting during my trip to Manchester. Aside from the weird looks we got from the other guests as soon as we walked in, and the ok service, this place was great! We had the bruschetta for our entree. It was so tasty with the cheese melted in. My boyfriend doesn't even like tomatoes and he enjoyed this a lot! For my entree I had the cheese tortellini. It was a pretty generous portion but it was so good that I didn't want it to end. My boyfriend had the meet ravioli and that was delicious as well. We were both left with a ton of left over sauce so we asked our waitress for some bread to sop it up, which did the trick. Food is always very good here and the staff is very nice. Food is made to order so it always takes a while and you know that going in. I would give this a better review but every time we go there and sit in the side room it is unbelievably hot. Last night I had to exit the restaurant several times to walk outside on the sidewalk and cool off. Based on some of the previous reviews the management has to be aware of this issue but for whatever reason if they choose not to act upon it. In the future we will most likely only visit this restaurant in the winter months so as to avoid sweating in our seats. I can't vouch for their food because I never ordered. The tables for 2 are way too small. When my wife and I sat ourselves at a table with placements for 4 the waiter said that table was reserved. The whole rest of the restaurant except for one other couple was vacant and the waiter never offered a different table, he just said sit at the "table for 2". I reiterated we were going to order a full meal and that table is not big enough, he said nothing so we left. I will never eat at a place that has tables that small if they don't allow you to eat at a bigger table. We went to piccolo Italian restaurant and were given a nice size booth and the food was great. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. My husband and I almost left after an awkward wait time in a very small space with no hostess. However when our waitress Jackie greeted us our mood started to change for the better. We did not realize that it is a BYOB restaurant so we ordered an appetizer and I went to the liquor store across the street to get a bottle of wine. Not a big deal. It didn't take long to realize that Jackie was working by herself on a fairly busy night but not once did she complain and she was always pleasant and smiling. She was definitely a trooper. We waited longer than usual for our dinner but we were not bothered by that as the atmosphere was cozy and inviting and the company and conversation was delightful. Small restaurant, I believe only the owner cooks. Pride's himself on his cooking. The garlic and bruschetta bread combo was great. Also ordered the chicken parmesan and my fiancée loved the sauce. Portions are not huge, but comfortable, and price is pretty comparable to other Italian places, even on the less expensive side which makes it a great value especially considering its homemade foods. There is no bar (its too small of a place to have a liquor license - but you can bring your own bottle and they will serve for $4, which is fair considering most places charge you at least $2 for a soda which costs next to nothing) they have sodas, coffees, and a few sparkling drinks that you can try. Soda's were about $1.25 coffees were more. Since its a smaller place they prefer for you to make a reservation. From what I understand the whole family works here. All in all a pleasant experience. Parking was a challenge. There were a few spots directly in front of the place that had already been occupied, so driving around to find a spot was an adventure. I was not a fan of the entrance into the dining area; you basically walk into the middle of a room where people are eating, and there is no host/hostess to seat you. Everyone that is eating already stops to stare at you.. kind of awkward. The place was very clean, with small tables that were a bit too close together. Our server was friendly and offered drinks right away. Their drink menu is tiny. No alcohol unless you bring your own.. I ordered the fetuccini alfredo with chicken and broccoli. There were a few menu items that they were sold out of at 6pm on a Wednesday. Some of the menu items were a bit pricey for what they were. We were told as a party of 2 that our meal would take a while because there was a party of 7 ahead of us, oh and it did take forever.. Our waitress brought garlic bread out after 20 minutes. We got our food about 50 minutes after sitting down. The portions were huge and hot. The alfredo was very thick, but tasty. Not much broccoli, but plenty of chicken. We had a reservation --- seating promptly, waitress was very pleasant and took our order right away at 6:45. We got a caesar salad which was very fresh and delicious. Then we waited, and waited and waited. At 8:00 we still didn't have our meals. We had tickets for the comedy show a 8:30, so we were concerned. When we questioned the waitress she said everything is made from scratch so it is standard practice to take a long time. We finally got our meals at 8:20!!! We waited over an hour and half after ordering to get our meal!!!! That is excessive. My husband ordered one of their specials which was on the higher end of their menu -- $22.00 and was to include pasta and scallops in a white sauce. It included bay scallops -- not what he expected for the price. I ordered eggplant parmesan and it was disgusting. It included maybe 3 pieces of eggplant swimming in a pool of sauce. It looked like tomato soup when I received it with a blob of mozzarella on top. We had to gobble down the meal and rush off to the show. Needless to say, I didn't even eat mine since it was so disgusting. We never write reviews, we are tolerant people and generally love just going out and getting served without complaining. But this experience was over the top horrible and I had to warn others. read more
