Again, lovely food but seriously. The service here is continuously abysmal. Every single time we…read morecome here, the servers seem really ignorant of what their jobs are. We finished our starters and no one came to collect the dishes. The server then comes around with the mains and waits while we clear the table for her. Seriously, this is her job. Not ours. Then after we finish the mains, the plates just linger. Alongside the growing collection of empty beer and wine bottles. We end up piling them up on the edge of the table but no one collects them. People, your job isn't just too bring food. You need to take stuff away too. Management need to better train their staff. We ended up removing the optional service. Our waitress didn't even bother to ask why. Obviously, she just doesn't care!!

I've edited my review of Nanban because I feel they are worthy of 4 stars moreso than the 3 I…read moreoriginally gave them. I've been three times now, and I have a bit of a weird like for Nanban, in that I usually prefer more traditional Japanese style ramen, but I have still enjoyed the fusion style food offered at Nanban. I've tried the Kumamoto Pork ramen as well as the Miyazaki Chicken ramen. I liked the Kumamoto Pork more. I've also found that the Jamaican hot sauce offered on the tables actually complements the ramen very nicely with a sour and spicy kick! It is quite spicy though, so be careful to test it before adding too much into your soup. In terms of appetizers, I've tried the Salmon Kake-ae, the Beef Tataki, and the Electric Eel. The Salmon Kake-ae was fantastic, with a very nice citrus-y flavour. The Beef Tataki is quite good as well. The Electric Eel was probably my least favourite as it was the least flavourful and a little bland. Nanban is definitely non-traditional style ramen, but the fusion Japanese/Carribean style works well in my opinion. Service has been good the times that I have gone. All in all, I'll probably continue to visit Nanban when I feel like eating in the Brixton area.

The host told me they were all booked up, and gestured to the dining room that they had all booked up. It was half empty so I assumed he was joking, but wanted to appear respectful, in case they had filled up in the 10 minutes it had been since I checked. The conversation then stopped there. Nope. He was serious. Looked online as I was leaving. I could have booked a table for two 10 minutes after I was leaving. They just didn't want us to actually be there. This restaurant is not interested in serving patrons. Don't come here.

So even though it hasn't quite reached Penge, I'm glad there's a sushi pace just up the hill! Instead of ordering sushi in and dealing with it after a 20 minute rest in plastic containers, we decided to pay a visit to the restaurant and have it as fresh as possible. The restaurant is divided into two sections, the first is at the front and has very normal tables and chairs. The second part is up a couple of steps and has tables with sunken seats. It takes a moment to work out how to slide in and sit, but once you are in there, it's very comfy. (just don't drink too much and try to get out again!) The service was brilliant. They really cannot do enough to help and are so sweet and nice to chat to. The decor is very slightly cold, and there weren't too many people in there with us, but it was fine. The food was a bit mixed. The prawn tempura was ok, but the vegetable tempura was really really boring. We didn't finish it and I don't think I would order tempura again from them. The miso soup was lovely, really really nice and I savoured every drop. The sushi and sashimi was great - fresh, delicious and quite perfect. I have also tried their Katsu curry (YUM) and their beef noodle ramen - also yum. Very generous with extremely nice, lean beef and lovely crispy greens.

Legit good Japanese izakaya-style place specializing in okonomiyaki. Overall all the food is solid…read moreif not spectacular but certainly better than you might expect in London. Even though your okonomiyaki options in London are limited, they're still strangely plentiful compared to the USA where the embrace of Japanese food culture is much more codified into life; it's still strange to me that during the last 30 years the Japanese cuisine that took off was sushi instead of ramen and all things izakaya. But here in the UK capital you have Abeno, which is good but takes itself a little too seriously for what is supposed to be the most casual and customer-focused of dishes (the translation is basically "as you want it"), and Jeux Jeux which is solidly meh. Okan sits right inbetween and feels as close as you can get to eating the famous dish in Osaka. I don't want to stretch that comparison too far but squint a bit and suddenly you might imagine for a moment you're eating in the middle of Shinsekai instead of Brixton. You can order your okonomiyaki as western as you like it (take out all that seafood, add the cheese!) and it'll still be just as delicious if you had ordered something closer to the spirit of the "nation's kitchen". Vibe is good, food is good, people are pleasant. Recommended!

I guess such goodness comes from cooking the same item over and over, until it gets to perfection. The okonomiyaki here has a good balance between salty, tart, sweet and savory, without anything too overpowering. The portion is quite generous and well executed. Personally, I found it to be quite authentic Japanese street food. Service is super friendly and attentive, even though it's essentially a food stall. It's easy to tell why this place was able to expand to several different locations in London. Good job!

The chicken came piping hot but the batter was bland and needed more seasoning and the chicken could have done with a marinade. We both ordered a veggie ramen, one spicy miso and the other spicy konbu. Both were a bit bland and could have done with more base flavour. The broth was watery and needed more of a boost. To top it all off, the beer was flat and even upon sending it back, another glass of the same draft beer came back. Service was slow and unhappy. Our waiter seemed on the other side of miserable. Cheer up! It can't be that bad. Unfortunately, a disappointing meal.

We decided not to travel into the city and instead find something to eat nearby. This place was about a mile from our flat and although has few reviews seemed promising, so we were on our way. We arrived around 9p and the place was packed! We were seated at the bar and ordered gyoza, beer, and three bowls of spicy tonkotsu. The gyoza was delicious and you could definitely tell that it was homemade. The ramen was delicious! The noodles were excellent and the broth was flavorful and the right amount of spice. The egg was pretty good, not the best I've had but still good. The portion sizes were perfect and we walked home with full bellies. The beer was delicious!
