Mountain Dew + isaw = ultimate combo

Aside from the caliber of education, the country's State U is known for a couple of other things - including its famous isaw. Though there are other places, Mang Larry's Isawan is the most famous establishment to get your fill of grilled innards and meat. The secret is in the marinade - and it's not surprising to see hordes of students, faculty and even outsiders line up to have a taste. If you're not getting your isaw and barbecue to take away, you have no choice but to eat at the venue. If you're the squeamish type, the idea of sitting on concrete blocks surrounded by flies and trash and the smell of roasting meat sticking to your clothes will definitely not appeal to you. But if you're one of the people that doesn't mind, this shouldn't be a hindrance to enjoying a few sticks of isaw baboy, isaw manok, or even some balunbalunan or goto (gizzard and large pork intestines, respectively). Also, don't forget to wash down your barbecue with a good, cold bottle of Mountain Dew. I can't explain why the two go so well together; they just do! Also, due to the overwhelming success of his business, Mang Larry was able to send his kids to school. How noble is that? I know for sure that I'm going to keep on supporting Mang Larry whenever I'm in UP, no matter what.

If you're game for something out of the ordinary then Mang Larry's isawan may be the perfect destination of your next foodtrip. Mang Larry's is a food stand located at the University of Diliman campus and is flocked by students, alumni as well as adventurous and curious foodies alike. Mang Larry's offers tasty innards. You're not reading this wrong. Barbecued chicken and pork intestines on skewers also known as 'isaw' are snack favorites in the Philippines. We can go finish 5 sticks dipped in a spicy vinegar sauce in one sitting. Dont fret if you dont want to try out the isaw, Mang Larry's also offers delicious barbecue, which you can of course dip into the spicy vinegar. The place is also devoid of the usual comforts of a restaurant since it literally just a stand. You will have to make do with finding your space in the open area and eat your isaw in blissful peace. A little patience may also be required since orders pile up quickly. Despite that, Mang Larry's continues to be an instution for the students in the university and foodies alike.

Amazing experience with a seasonal, regional Philippine menu…read more Please note that the restaurant is at the Power Plant mall and no longer in Quezon City. Went for a nice dinner. Entrance is on the 7th floor next to the Power Plant mall. Was greeted at the door and was shown a tour of their kitchen and briefly met the chefs making the night's meals. The dinner was 9 courses, with several appetizer type dishes, a palate cleanser, the main course, finishing with dessert. The restaurant changes their menu every 6-8 months, with our menu being inspired by the Western Mindanao region of the Philippines. First was a beef tinola soup. This is typically chicken, so was a different vibe. It was more of a stock than just soup, and it was very rich. Good way to start the meal off. The next course was 4 types of satti (skewers). Satay vibes, was very well bbq'd with the meats being beef tongue, beef cheek, chicken tail, and another chicken part (don't recall unfortunately). Agal agal (seaweed) and tuna was next. This was a refreshing salad with bits of tuna slices mixed in. An egg noodle dish was after the salad. Some more seaweed (different variety). Had a nice texture and the noodles were well made. The following dish was a play on roti - with it being like a sandwich, with layers of roti and filling, with a bed of veggies and cheese on top. This was really well made. Léché flan was the palate cleanser. Honestly could have had this for dessert also, it was really creamy and sweet. The main was next - banana leaf rice with a fried prawn, a beef stew, and grapefruit slaw. We had a shrimp allergy, so we were also provided some scallops with hollandaise sauce. Funny enough, I think the scallops rocked the most - though all the dishes were amazing. There were two desserts, one was a Zamboangan play of halo halo with a berry ice cream. The other was a set of chocolates with some local coffee. Everything was delicious. We also had a couple pinot noirs and the banana pandan old fashioned. The wines were decent, but the old fashioned was legit. Would def recommend it. All in all, a fantastic experience and hope to relive the experience again soon!

When I'm with a friend, what we do is order their Tapa Rice or Yang Chow rice, which is good for 2-3 people but usually just two when we're hungry (Tip: The Tapa Rice is a meal in itself because it is a large serving of rice topped with Beef Tapa and its sauce.) For the viand, we usually share their pork sisig with which they are known for (and Yes, their sisig is definitely great). My friend and I end up just spending about Php 150 for this satisfying meal. But if you're on your own or just not up to sisig, you can also try their rice meals like their Chicken Cordon Bleu or Lechon Kawali. If you're visiting this place in the evening, it's also nice to have a beer or two and you can take a smoke in their outdoor tables.

The staff, while cordial, can be a bit cold at times to customers. The environment is spacious, specifically designed to depict a homey atmosphere suited for group outings. The place, however, looks too simple and a bit worn down, which could be due to the ongoing repairs in the restaurant. The food, however, is served with the appropriate amounts (depending if for short order, solo, or for sharing), and their taste adds a home-cooked element to it. I also particularly liked the chicken curry and the creamy fish fingers, and I would recommend them to anyone interested in dining in this establishment. If you are planning to eat with your friends and save some money, Wok Dis Way is a good spot for you. Otherwise, I would suggest exploring other options first.

It's one of the go-to restaurants for Ateneans, especially for dinners after a long day. It's not as pricey as a fancy restaurant, and definitely more homey than Jollibee or McDo, so it's a welcome change to most college students' diets. When I go there I usually order one of their sizzling dishes, most notably the Sisig a la Domeng. and at P145, you're going to save up on a lot since it's large enough to share among 2-3 people. They've also got other favorites that hit close to home like Lechon Kawali, Kare-Kare, and Sinigang, which are all great. My friend said she found her salpicao a tad oily, but I think that the affordability outweighs small errors like that. The layout of the place makes it feel like a cute Filipino diner, with the polite and cheery staff and the welcome chit-chat of other diners. You'll definitely get your money's worth here.

It was packed from the moment we entered, just how my mom said she remembers it from her own student days. Ken Afford's specialty is "lutong bahay" - makes sense as it's right below a dorm full of college students who probably miss eating at home on a regular basis. I had their must-try all-day breakfast, chili corned beef with garlic rice and a fried egg, which was a pretty filling plate on its own. We also got their Sisig ala Domeng to share - apparently one of the best in the city and I can agree! I really liked the naturally sweet and refreshing mango shake too, which even had a surprising hint of gulaman in it. With good home-cooked food at prices that live up to its name, Ken Afford is a serious save.

It was a total feast for everyone of us!!! What makes this O'ini stand out for me is the value for money. It's not pricey. Food is good for 1-2 persons but the flavour just makes you want to order more food. The store also has take home food from longganisa to the sansrival so that you wouldn't miss Kapampangan food at home. If you happen to be stuck in Katipunan, look for O'ini and it's a sure fire hit for everyone's tastebuds!

Gerry's Jeepney offers a taste of how it's like to enjoy a Boodle Fight. Even with the most basic Filipino food items such as Liempo, Calamares, Lechin Kawali, Fried Hito, Inihaw na Pusit and Ensaladang Talong, the quaint hole-in-the-wall masters these dishes perfectly with fresh ingredients and just the right amount of seasoning. Their secret is in their flavorful rice which makes you get a heaping more than your actual share on the table. Mind you, the best way to eat there is using your hands. While this may not sound like the most sanitary way to dine for some, I don't mind getting a little down and dirty if the food requires so. This is especially true if it's the only way to get that last piece of stubborn fish meat.
