This one is up there with our faves so far! Not sure how I missed this one as I've taken my daughters to the playground just on the other side of the fence many times since they were young. The pool however, is actually located ON Fairmount. (2 hr free street parking all around) There are cement bleachers and cushions for lounging, as well as neat little cubbies to place your belongings. The pool is immaculate and separated by rope from the 3 footer end and the 4 ft plus end. Two lifeguards were on duty at all times, one on each side of the pool. They were playing some popular tunes my girls and I had a great time jamming to in the star. Nothing too loud, but made the experience that much more fun. I have never heard music at any other public pools. There are restrooms right there and they weren't awful. Decent in fact. Lol The rules are fairly simple-you must take a quick shower before entering the water and to refrain from taking photos. (I snapped just a few before they officially opened for you guys) They have a little garden, which is a nice touch! Everyone was super friendly taking time to get to know one another and chatting about the neighborhood. It was mostly filled with residents from NoLibs, but I'm going to say it was worth the trek from across town. Nothing like enjoying free access to a large pool without having to leave the city. You can easily make a nice day of it and hit up one of the casual restaurants nearby afterwards...Abbaye, Wahlburgers, Apricotstone etc My kiddos begged to return the following day and we basically have our own private pool just outside the city.

All of the space are sparkling clean including the bathrooms. The pools are spacious with plenty of room for everyone. Great eating space and fridges to keep things cold. After the renovation, the courts are new and the jungle gyms are more interactive and plenty of kids come by and play when the weather is right. There's also a corner store across the street so it's easy access to popsicles and snacks and drinks to stay hydrated. It's a great addition to the neighborhood!

We use the baseball fields for kickball and softball while the tennis courts support dodgeball. I'm always happy with how well the fields and courts are maintained. They offer a more pleasant experience than the other fields we sometimes get stuck on! Apparently, they offer a boxing program too! Once I check it out, I'll be happy to share my thoughts. The only downside to Kendrick are the restrooms. The good news, is they have them available and sized appropriately. However, they aren't kept up as much as they should be - at least its seems that way on some evening games. Still, compared to other places, I'm just happy to have a bathroom option!

Well, it turns out there is a completely free pool on the other side! The entrance is on Ridge Ave. and you can park on all sides of the Kendrick and there is a parking lot on the Pensdale side, but it's a touch further to walk. When you enter, it seems a bit old school as you will see benches and clothing hooks and a sign that says "Changing Area." This facility was built in 1925 so apparently back then people would just change plein air. Don't change there now. Walk through the entrance and you will be greeted by a friendly staff. The pool is great. There are only benches, no chairs. It's also all concrete so bring a towels or other devices to lay on. Consider bringing a camping chair for long stretched of hanging out. The water is clean and fresh. The staff is super attentive. The history is amazing. This is a best kept secret of the Roxborough area. Food and drink is NOT permitted. Definitely don't bring glass. I suspect it's cool to bring a plastic water bottle. Respect the pool, rules, and the staff and enjoy a FREE place to cool down in the summer.

Greetings, I live…read moredirectly across the street from Barkan Park and my grandson sometimes plays there with his father from time to time, but because of the conditions they usually go to the park located at 50th and Baltimore Avenue. I would love to frequent our neighborhood park more, but as stated by a previous reviewer, the park has become a hangout for folks who may be drinking or smoking marijuana and some that also have serious mental health challenges which are often disruptive. Unfortunately the park has also become a hangout for those who are homeless and sleeping on the benches overnight. Barkan Park is a beautiful park, but it certainly could be better kept so that our families and neighbors could have a place to enjoy and feel comfortable visiting. I would be happy to follow-up with the appropriate contacts to see what can be done to address this issue. Z. Brandon
