Villa d'Este - Dark chocolate assortment

Villa d'Este

This review is for the restaurant Veranda as we did not stay in the Villa d'Este hotel…read more We came here for dinner on Friday night along with two other couples. Upon arrival we were told that the men needed to be wearing jackets. I wish that our hotel had told us because my husband had packed one, but luckily the restaurant keeps spare jackets on site for just this situation. The large dining room is incredibly old school with beautiful brass dining chairs laden in blue and yellow striped fabric. When they brought out the wine list I thought it was a joke because it was the size of a dictionary! For dinner I had the beet tartare and the veal filet. The soy marinated tofu was a little bit of an odd flavor combined the beet dish but besides that it was quite good. My husband started with the gnocchi and it may have been the best dish of the night, it was dynamite. In my opinion, my veal filet was better than my husbands beef filet and I also really enjoyed the petite eggplant parmigiana that came with it. Soufflé and ice creams for dessert were a big hit, but I was especially pleased because I asked if they had some dark chocolates off menu and they brought me out a beautiful assortment that tasted as good as they looked. Great restaurant if you are looking for an elegant evening out on the town or an excuse to use the dinner jacket that you packed but thought you wouldn't need.

Fantastic restaurant in Torno. We were a little apprehensive having had poor meals in hotel…read morerestaurants before, but we were pleasantly surprised. Both my wife and I had the risotto Milanese with osso bucco, a house specialty. It was DELICIOUS!!! The risotto was a perfect mix of creaminess while still maintaining a firm bite to the rice grains (some sort of magical alchemy I'm sure). The flavor was superb. The osso bucco was fork tender, rich in flavor, and oh so good. We had a local from Milan with us and he gave the risotto two thumbs up, slurping and chomping his way happily through his plate. We all finished the meal by digging out the marrow and having it on a crusty piece of bread, as the locals do. Food was excellent, as was the friendly staff (who spoke a good bit of English). I would love to come back here one day

It was just a sort walk and we enjoyed an outstanding meal. The service was great and the food was too. This is a new property with a modern look. We all had different items and they were very good. It is very modern with large room with a couch and a large bathroom. They have a large deck facing the water. I think we will try a room in this hotel on our next visit.

We were looking for some rest and relaxation, ideally in a beautiful setting with good food. This hotel absolutely delivered. We had a suite facing the lake with a large balcony. The suite and the balcony were both excellently appointed, and quite large. The bed was very comfortable. The couch, bureau, desk and chairs were all in excellent condition. The room itself was beautiful, with era appropriate design. The balcony was excellent, comfortable and quite large. There were two outdoor lounge chairs, and a table with two chairs. With all of that, there was still enough room left on the balcony for my morning workout. The grounds are beautiful. And the hotel continues its use of greenery on the balconies to separate areas for each suite. All done tastefully and the plants are all in very good condition. The breakfast buffet is fantastic. An assortment of croissants, made to order omelets, cereal, yoghurts, fruit, excellent cheeses, meats . . . It goes on and on. The staff were quite lovely and extremely helpful. In truth, I was prepared for a bit of pushback when my wife and I showed up - we are gay. Not even a blink of an eye from anyone. Unfortunately, these days that is a welcome relief. And the spa - out of this world! Massages, lovely jacuzzi/hot tub, Finnish sauna, Turkish bath and more. If you are a guest the hotel there is a small fee for the use of the spa. The pool is lovely. It sits right next to lake Como. Jumping in was easy, if you have the stamina for cold water. There is a small cafe at the pool with food and drinks. The staff brings your order out to wherever you are sitting. The village of Maltrasio is filled with beauty and lovely people. The hotel is on the shore and the village goes up the hill. The walk to the village is short, but a bit steep. All in all this is a lovely place to come if you want beauty, relaxation, good food and kind people.

So many things were thought of that I'd never consider. As simple as leaving a glass cleaner cloth on my nightstand to accompany the sunglasses that I left out. Different chocolates at turn down service each night. Making sure the mini bar was always stocked. Complimentary champagne upon arrival. Speedy laundry service. Attentive restaurant staff. Inventive, tasty, and beautiful meals at the restaurant. Fantastic cappuccinos (and with nut milks available). Never leaving a glass empty. Always something available to drink or snack on. As far as decor- mid century modern posh. Even though this hotel is now a few years old- you wouldn't know it because of how well they maintain everything. Brown woods and green accents were so pleasing to the eye and created a cozy hip aesthetic despite its modernity and clean lines. Location is perfect for rest. Torno is not a town with crowds shoulder to shoulder. You have room to breathe, to have some privacy, and to truly rest. But it is not sleepy. Hotel set us up with a wonderful and challenging hike, as well as a beautiful boat tour of part of Lake Como. The ferry is also not far away if you are looking to visit one of the other busier parts of Como. Any need or question we had, the Il Sereno staff strived to fulfill. I visited during my birthday and felt so very special every day I spent here. I couldn't think of a more enjoyable experience and I couldn't recommend this enough.

My hats off to the leadership of this property for the curation and training of their staff. Young energetic foodies and caring people who anticipate needs but never hover and basically seem to take great joy in you having have a great time. I loved not being presented with bills also just they know who you are and it ends up on your bill at the end. Do not miss a boat ride. At check-in, the staff on the lobby floor were all very helpful and friendly. The room was also very spacious and clean which was great. Modern finishes and updated compared to other options in the area. Views from the room we had were also very nice, especially at sunset. It was great for our family that this room we booked had 2 bathrooms and a pullout bed, though the pullout bed was very hard and not very comfortable. We appreciated some of the complimentary gifts provided due to our Hilton status. Where the service slipped, was at the pool and rooftop area. On our second to last day, 2 of us decided to head to the pool around 3pm. It was busy and there were not any spots to sit/lay down. Many chairs had towels and belongings left on them where people had either left to go into the pool or left to their room to come back later or potentially not at all. We waited for some assistance near the bar area and eventually, some other guests arrived, trying to scope out spots as well. After about 15 minutes, I approached one of the guys walking around and asked if there were any spots available. He talked with one of his partners and they walked around a bit and said everything is taken (no kidding). I asked if any of the spots were just towels people left and they were done for the day and he claimed it's impossible to know. He then said to wait off to the side and he'd get us a chair to place our things so we could go in the pool. We stood off to the side (in the hot sun) for about 20 min and he never brought us the chair. We watched him walk around doing other things avoiding eye contact with us. Yet, his colleague helped another couple who arrived after us get a spot. We decided enough is enough and left. The staff need to do a much better job cleaning spots off when people leave and actually follow-through on their work. Additionally, there should be time limits so that someone cannot claim a lounge chair in the morning and use it all day long so that no one else can use the pool. There's limited space to begin with so something should be done. Additionally, the pool closed at 6PM which I think is very early and pretty unreasonable. I'm assuming this is because they do not want the noise or inconvenience for their restaurant but still. The restaurant is a whole other experience, but overall, poor food quality, slow, and overpriced. Overall, if visiting Como again, I would likely choose another place to stay as this location could use some improvements to quality of service and overall value when looking at your nightly price.
