The Manago Hotel is not your typical Hawaii Resort Hotel - not even close. This lovely, historic hotel was built in 1917 and has been owned by the same family throughout. The rooms are clean and comfortable rooms without a lot of frills but with plenty of aloha and an excellent price. We treated ourself to the Japanese style room and really enjoyed our lanai and outstanding view. I also loved the gardens, as you can see by the many photos I've shared here. Unfortunately we didn't get to try out their restaurant which we've heard so much about. But we will be sure to come back and check out these pork chops we keep hearing about!!

I stayed here five nights in April and loved it. If you're looking for a fufu hotel go elsewhere. My room was clean, bed comfortable and view from the lanai amazing. I brought my one cup drip coffee maker so I could brew my own Kona coffee. Also, cause there's no frig, I bought a small styrofoam ice chest and filled it with ice once a day so I could have cold water and chill my papayas and mangos before eating them. The lack of AC was not a problem at all I actually had to close the windows at night it got so cool at that elevation. The employees are also super nice especially Ramona and the housekeeper did a great job. It's a great escape from city life!!

"A place time forgot" - Judy C Feb 2016 There are very few "modern" amenities here. No phone or television in rooms. Rather, a phone on the wall per floor to call the front desk, pay phone on each floor (in case you don't have a cell phone) and manual check in procedures prevail ; no computerized keys but a regular door lock type key for rooms. There are No air conditioners , only ceiling fans (in mauka Kona, the cool mountain breeze cools the property) The room rates per night reach back to the 1980's and experienced modest (try $1 per year) increases where the room rates are still a 2 digit average per night per person The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with post 2010 pricing and it closes between meals so check the schedule The staff and ownership try to follow suit to the founding father where Manago Hotel is truly your home away from home. You will never have a bad meal or lousy service here Their original tatami room (matted floor) and furo-ba (wooden bath tub) is what I remember but might not be available for rent, not sure Yes I will be back for a more leisurely stay, maybe next year- Manago's centennial year 2017. May you live on Manago Hotel!!!

This hotel is a charming dig right off mamalahoa hwy. Over 100 years old it reminds me of old hawaii staying at aunty's house. Very comfortable, quiet with the exception of the coqui frogs, but it just has that charm that is so comforting. If you're looking for action don't come here. This place is for rest, hospitality and charm. Definitely a gem. My parents remember staying here and they even say such a nice place. We got the japanese room, and oh was I charmed. Again, feeling like staying at a relative home. The views are stunning.

MANAGO HOTEL: Mamalahoa Hwy marker between 109 and 110 on the ocean side. Old Inn reminds me of old Japanese Minshuku. Did not stay here this time, but when we come back on the south of Kona, we might stay.

    Nice neon lights. Comfortable hotel.

We heard and read many good things about the Manago hotel and finally had the chance to stay a couple nights at the end of 2018. It was nice to get away from the busy city and everyday politics and experience the hotel's attributes. The historic hotel and restaurant brought back good memories and flavors. No TV or A/C in the room, so we experienced the peacefulness of the area and watched a beautiful sunset transition to a clear and cool starlit night from the cozy balcony of our room. Nothing fancy, just a good value hotel and restaurant.

We had an amazing eight-night stay at the Outrigger Kona! I've noticed that several recent reviews…read morehave been rough on this resort and I will try to address some of the trends. PROPERTY: Located about 30 minutes south of the airport, the resort is on beautiful Keauhou Bay. The common spaces around the property were well cared for and I liked the centralized flow to the pool, restaurant, gym, lounge, market, and lobby. In Nov 2025, there was weekday construction noise to renovate the spa and to build a Duke's Restaurant, but this was not a problem for us since we were gone during the day anyway. I started every morning at the gym that had new equipment and a great view of the ocean. ROOMS: The room we were placed in was technically oceanfront, but was not what the check-in clerk called the "cruise ship porthole view" where you see only the ocean out your window. We were on the ground floor with several yards of walking path in front of it. We did love that the ground floor rooms had super high ceilings, so at least if you're on the ground, the room felt bigger, and we had a direct view of the manta ray tours at night. The rooms have been refreshed with new carpet, furniture, and updated bathrooms. Our king room had a corner sofa and coffee table that was a perfect hangout zone for us. A few days later, I approached the front desk to ask if maybe a better view room were available for the back half of our stay. Tiana was super friendly and said she had a room for us that we could look at in the afternoon. Short story, the afternoon revisit did not go well, both with front desk miscommunications and the room itself, so we decided to stay put. Tiana called us the next morning to ask what had happened since she wasn't there in the afternoon and saw we had not moved rooms. When I explained why we decided to stay put, she had Sally from management get in touch with us. Sally could not have been more kind and immediately moved us into an amazing top floor room, left us a gift basket with coffee and a manta ray plush, and removed our parking charges. This is the sort of over-the-top response that used to be more common, but ever since the pandemic, I've rarely seen it. We were so appreciative that I was even embarrassed that they did so much for us - there wasn't a major problem, but they just didn't like that we hadn't had an outstanding experience at the Outrigger Kona, and they made sure we had one. VOYAGER 47 LOUNGE: Icing on the cake was the Voyager 47 Lounge. Lounge access was included with our travel package and we assumed it would be like other lounges we've been to with snacks, beverages, sometimes light bites. Voyager 47 was way more than that, with hot breakfast and dinner buffet every day, including alcohol! The staff were the cream of an already incredible crop: Zach, Sharlaine, Tessa, Fred, Kamea, and Celeste made us feel welcome and at home every day. We even started planning our days around Voyager 47 because it was such a great experience. I don't want to oversell it, but it was more than worth the upgrade for us. Hawaii vacations come at such a premium compared to almost anywhere on the mainland, and it's hard not to be disappointed when that big trip isn't panning out the way you expect. We couldn't be more grateful to the Outrigger for going above and beyond to make sure we had an incredible vacation on the Big Island. Once they are past their renovations, I'm sure it'll be even better.

A pleasant and comfortable camping experience on the Big Island…read more As a solo woman, I spent 9 nights in the Jungle Canopy at Gingerhill Farm Retreat in April 2026. I had an excellent stay, although I am used to camping, and feel that having a camping mindset is required for staying here. Yes, the chorus of frogs are very loud as soon as it's dark, and you can hear roosters in the distance in the morning along with bird songs. However, I enjoyed the noises and am an early riser. The Jungle Canopy is located close to the private residence, and I experienced little human noise. There was one nighttime rain and no leaks. The screened-in bedroom is functional, and the bed has a good (firm) mattress. The sink and toilet, screened off and behind the bed, are nice to have in this enlarged tent. The shower is a few feet outside the tented bedroom/kitchen, and is open to the sky (cool to look up at the tree canopy). The shower is very nice, and the water gets hot. There is no door, but the only way you can be seen is from the Jungle Canopy tent itself (you can hang a sarong if you needed more privacy). They provide face clothes and towels, two worn beach towels, as well as family-size liquid hand soap, shampoo and conditioner (decent quality). The kitchen, in front of the screened bedroom, also under a canopy, has everything you need: pots and pans (including a few that are stainless steel), a good size fridge with a small enclosed freezer (with 2 freezer packs), a sink with dish soap, etc. They provide a Berkey-like water filter carboy, a stainless-steel kettle to boil water, as well as coffee beans, a grinder, and French-press. There is a small table with two chairs where you can look at beautiful tropical plants. The only bummer is that the hot plate to cook food and boil the kettle can be slow to heat, especially if there is a slight breeze. Once the propane tank emptied while I was cooking breakfast and I had to text to ask for a replacement, however, someone came over right away and I was able to resume cooking. Like camping, you are responsible for taking out your own trash to communal cans located a fairly short distance away. You can't put any toilet paper down the toilet, so all paper used for #1 and #2 needs to go into a plastic-bag-lined trash can and you remove and dump. They removed the compost. Recommendations to Gingerhill: provide more plastic bags for trash, more toilet paper (I had to ask), and offer a larger compost bucket as it filled too quickly. Also, one day I came back in the afternoon and found the gate code didn't work. I texted and called and fairly soon someone told me that they changed the code, but didn't notify me. Next time they change the code they should text all visitors staying at the farm the new code. So, in all, I would give a 9/10 ranking, especially given the cost compared to other accommodations, and the tropical farm experience. FYI, there is snorkeling gear that you can use that is located next to the Sunset Cottage.

Wouldn't come back.

Wonderful, welcoming hostel. This is a traveler's hostel, and the staff are good at their work, and…read morevery welcoming to all visitors to the islands. One won't find locals or homeless, like one can find in other west coast towns. NOTES: There is a snorkel rental place down the road under 2 miles, and it rents kayaks, too. Kona Boys Kayak. There is NOT a rental shop on site(regardless of what other reviews say). a staff person lent me a mask and snorkel day one, said" its not a great one", but it was awesome to use in the water at the bottom of Captain Cook Trail (which is walking distance to the hostel front door). There is a Hawaii Coffee company HiCO shop across the street, so great breakfast/lunch eats and COFFEE literally across the road. Great if staying only one night, and not wanting to go to the grocery or use the excellent kitchen at the hostel. Also, a sort of mini-mart 7/11-ish kind of store for snacks and microwave dinner or beer/wine/ice cream.
