This place was absolutely dreamy and the staff was so kind. We stayed in the cottage and really loved the privacy it offered. We had our own spacious lanai to watch the sunrise each morning. Breakfast was delicious and fresh. They made special accommodations for us vegetarians which I greatly appreciated. Coffee was so good and the view from the dining table was breathtaking. As far as location, you're definitely a little off the beaten path which is what we wanted. There are some small shops and restaurants to walk to, but for the most part you'll probably be hopping in your car to head to the beach and busier parts of the island. Hawaii is meant to be explored, no matter what inn or hotel you decide to make your home base. But Holualoa Inn is truly magical and I'll never forget my time there.

What a treat! We left about 3/4 weeks ago and miss Honu Kai so much already!!!!…read more If you are looking to really experience the island like a local instead of just staying at a hotel, I highly recommend honu Kai, especially if you love nature. Honu Kai provides a unique yet comfortable stay. This was my first time at a b&b so I had a lot of questions. Months prior to booking, I called and texted Amy with my questions, and she always got back to me quickly. Location was great because target is only 10 min away if you need to stock up on the essentials. Lots of amazing restaurants are within 15 minutes as well. The property is so beautiful and well maintained. It truly felt like a second home. It has a peaceful and zen feeling that is extra magical at night due to the coquis. Our bed was so comfortable and our room was cleaned everyday. The fresh breakfast everyday with coffee and juice was excellent as well. The fruit was always fresh and sweet! I'm someone who appreciates quiet mornings alone so I was unsure about having breakfast with other people, but I'm so glad we did it. It's a really amazing and unique experience to sit and eat with people from all over the world! I truly miss sitting on the porch watching the birds and chickens on the lawn. What really made our experience special was Amy. She is so friendly, personable, and just a genuinely kind soul! Absolutely loved her! Our time here wouldn't have been the same without her. She truly goes above and beyond and really cares. 100000% recommend Honu Kai. We will definitely be back!

Unfortunately, with less than a month to go and only 4 rooms total was not able to get extra nights here. The one night we did have here was exactly like how I imagine old Hawai`i would look like. Just a short drive to downtown Kona for food and even Costco but far enough that you feel like you can disconnect. With so much shared public area and again only 4 rooms, nothing ever felt crowded. You had access to an outdoor dining area, gardens, sundeck, grill, plates, utensils, your own shelf in the fridge and even snorkel and beach gear. The only issue I had was when I used the hot tub, my eyes started stinging so not sure if it was overly chlorinated so only lasted less than 5 minutes as I kept tearing up. The rooms were comfortable, very thought out and has such nice little touches that make you feel at home. Only thing to note is since they are in such a tropical setting, they do not want you eating in your room to avoid ant infestations, etc.. Again, no big deal as they have a spacious dining area right downstairs that we had all to ourselves when we wanted to eat or snack. Innkeeper Amy was friendly, welcoming, and made sure we were taken care of. The breakfast in the morning was better than what you can get at a restaurant and the ambiance just cannot be beat. The sound of the rain while we ate our takeout dinner was so soothing and relaxing and the sound of the birds on a sunny morning paired well with that breakfast. We honestly didn't want to leave that we lingered after check out enjoying our lunch at their public area. I honestly could not ask for anything more.

They are reviving this coffee farm and making it 100% organic. Linda walked us through the farm personally and cut down fruits for us to try on the walk. We tried the coffee beans, cacao, bananas, banana flowers, chayote, and more. She was so knowledgeable and patient. I love indoor plants here on the mainland, and this farm was covered in them outdoors in their natural habitat. Monsteras have fruit! She was able to explain the ecosystem, the processes, and the challenges of coffee farms so well that we felt like new experts ourselves. She knew the history of these lands and was very knowledgeable about places to explore around the area. She and her husband are outdoorsy, so she recommended an amazing hike. She let us borrow snorkeling goggles which ended up being game-changers. We were lucky enough to be staying at the Mango Sunset B&B during a time when Linda and Dan were doing a lot of business, and they hired a traveling inn-keeping couple to help cover meals and concierge part of the time. Gene and Kriss were incredibly nice too. Kriss is one of the best chefs I have ever experienced (we well be following them too!). She has a book and had a cooking show. We were well taken care of by this team on our honeymoon! The Bed and Breakfast is extremely close to the KONA airport. Literally just drive up and up the side of a gorgeous mountain with the pacific ocean in your rear view mirror for a quick drive and you are there! It was easy to find, and we were looking for all new road signs during the end of sunset when it was getting dark! The first Hawaiian sunset we saw was incredible. We could see the ocean in the morning through our french doors! We were greeted our first morning by the employee of the year. A black cat named Melissa that lives on the farm. She was so sweet and walked us to breakfast! The weather was perfect the whole time, so we were able to sit at the outdoor tables under an avocado tree. Every morning was crisp and refreshing. The breakfasts were unbelievable. The Kona coffee they served is grown and roasted from the Lyman Farm! We had it french pressed, and we fell in love. The B&B is open air, but (as Linda explained) it rains for a short while every afternoon due to the tide and pulling moisture up the mountain side. So the land replenishes the plant life and keeps the ground cool. The only complaint I have is an invasive frog that is not anyone from the Farms fault. It was brought over by a merchant years ago and is taking over food sources from bird. Ad unfortunately it is loud at night. But the Inn provided us a dehumidifier and strong fans that helped drown out the noise at night. We will be staying here again!!!

There were also mango trees, guava, avocado & I'm sure a ton of other stuff I'm missing - it's very tranquil The house is lovely, w/ a ginormous room & the biggest bed I think I've ever seen - it was so awesome! In fact, I may be safe in saying this room was bigger than my whole apartment! Our room boasted it's own sauna & huge walk-in shower; free wifi; fridge, huge tv w/ satellite channels; & a personalized breakfast whenever we cared to wake for the day Pam rents just the 1 room of her home & it was perfect getaway - nice & quiet w/ no worries about noisy neighbors......that is, unless you count the feral chickens who squawk anywhere from 1:30am, going forward. Some mornings, they let us sleep in until 3am.... I say this in jest as Pam had absolutely no control over this - feral chickens have completely taken over the Island. They're absolutely everywhere. No lie. Everywhere we drove - Costco, Safeway, beaches, churches, random sides of the road.....everywhere! So unless you're staying at a huge resort where they have guards to chase away the chickens or you're room is high enough to drown out all noise, you'll be dealing w/ this. Get used to it But back to the awesome house, there is a full size pool w/ pool house & fridge & all the accessories; there's also a soaking tub on the deck of the main house. When Pam heard we were planning a beach day, she offered to let us use her boogie boards & she was always one to offer a local's place to check out. The house is filled w/ all kinds of guidebooks, brochures & information about the Big Island & she has created a wonderful place to lounge, rest, or research your next great island adventure for the day On our final morning there, we were treated to some strawberry guava, just picked from her garden - they were scrumptious! We had an amazing eight-night stay at the Outrigger Kona! I've noticed that several recent reviews…read morehave been rough on this resort and I will try to address some of the trends. PROPERTY: Located about 30 minutes south of the airport, the resort is on beautiful Keauhou Bay. The common spaces around the property were well cared for and I liked the centralized flow to the pool, restaurant, gym, lounge, market, and lobby. In Nov 2025, there was weekday construction noise to renovate the spa and to build a Duke's Restaurant, but this was not a problem for us since we were gone during the day anyway. I started every morning at the gym that had new equipment and a great view of the ocean. ROOMS: The room we were placed in was technically oceanfront, but was not what the check-in clerk called the "cruise ship porthole view" where you see only the ocean out your window. We were on the ground floor with several yards of walking path in front of it. We did love that the ground floor rooms had super high ceilings, so at least if you're on the ground, the room felt bigger, and we had a direct view of the manta ray tours at night. The rooms have been refreshed with new carpet, furniture, and updated bathrooms. Our king room had a corner sofa and coffee table that was a perfect hangout zone for us. A few days later, I approached the front desk to ask if maybe a better view room were available for the back half of our stay. Tiana was super friendly and said she had a room for us that we could look at in the afternoon. Short story, the afternoon revisit did not go well, both with front desk miscommunications and the room itself, so we decided to stay put. Tiana called us the next morning to ask what had happened since she wasn't there in the afternoon and saw we had not moved rooms. When I explained why we decided to stay put, she had Sally from management get in touch with us. Sally could not have been more kind and immediately moved us into an amazing top floor room, left us a gift basket with coffee and a manta ray plush, and removed our parking charges. This is the sort of over-the-top response that used to be more common, but ever since the pandemic, I've rarely seen it. We were so appreciative that I was even embarrassed that they did so much for us - there wasn't a major problem, but they just didn't like that we hadn't had an outstanding experience at the Outrigger Kona, and they made sure we had one. VOYAGER 47 LOUNGE: Icing on the cake was the Voyager 47 Lounge. Lounge access was included with our travel package and we assumed it would be like other lounges we've been to with snacks, beverages, sometimes light bites. Voyager 47 was way more than that, with hot breakfast and dinner buffet every day, including alcohol! The staff were the cream of an already incredible crop: Zach, Sharlaine, Tessa, Fred, Kamea, and Celeste made us feel welcome and at home every day. We even started planning our days around Voyager 47 because it was such a great experience. I don't want to oversell it, but it was more than worth the upgrade for us. Hawaii vacations come at such a premium compared to almost anywhere on the mainland, and it's hard not to be disappointed when that big trip isn't panning out the way you expect. We couldn't be more grateful to the Outrigger for going above and beyond to make sure we had an incredible vacation on the Big Island. Once they are past their renovations, I'm sure it'll be even better.

I kind of expected a little more from this 4 star resort. Outside the resort looks great. Thought…read moreit was a bit ridiculous that we were checking in at like 6pm and they didn't have a room ready for us, but eventually they found something. Inside the room was tired and dated. The paint was peeling on the walls. The shower toiletries were like 5ft high, which was absolutely riddiculous. About the only 'nice' thing about this place is that it's near the boats that go out for the manta ray tours.
