So the new owners purchased in 2020, so let me start by saying any review older than that is an old owner, I beg of you to disregard the low rating. Dan and Linda are incredible people. They are reviving this coffee farm and making it 100% organic. Linda walked us through the farm personally and cut down fruits for us to try on the walk. We tried the coffee beans, cacao, bananas, banana flowers, chayote, and more. She was so knowledgeable and patient. I love indoor plants here on the mainland, and this farm was covered in them outdoors in their natural habitat. Monsteras have fruit! She was able to explain the ecosystem, the processes, and the challenges of coffee farms so well that we felt like new experts ourselves. She knew the history of these lands and was very knowledgeable about places to explore around the area. She and her husband are outdoorsy, so she recommended an amazing hike. She let us borrow snorkeling goggles which ended up being game-changers. We were lucky enough to be staying at the Mango Sunset B&B during a time when Linda and Dan were doing a lot of business, and they hired a traveling inn-keeping couple to help cover meals and concierge part of the time. Gene and Kriss were incredibly nice too. Kriss is one of the best chefs I have ever experienced (we well be following them too!). She has a book and had a cooking show. We were well taken care of by this team on our honeymoon! The Bed and Breakfast is extremely close to the KONA airport. Literally just drive up and up the side of a gorgeous mountain with the pacific ocean in your rear view mirror for a quick drive and you are there! It was easy to find, and we were looking for all new road signs during the end of sunset when it was getting dark! The first Hawaiian sunset we saw was incredible. We could see the ocean in the morning through our french doors! We were greeted our first morning by the employee of the year. A black cat named Melissa that lives on the farm. She was so sweet and walked us to breakfast! The weather was perfect the whole time, so we were able to sit at the outdoor tables under an avocado tree. Every morning was crisp and refreshing. The breakfasts were unbelievable. The Kona coffee they served is grown and roasted from the Lyman Farm! We had it french pressed, and we fell in love. The B&B is open air, but (as Linda explained) it rains for a short while every afternoon due to the tide and pulling moisture up the mountain side. So the land replenishes the plant life and keeps the ground cool. The only complaint I have is an invasive frog that is not anyone from the Farms fault. It was brought over by a merchant years ago and is taking over food sources from bird. Ad unfortunately it is loud at night. But the Inn provided us a dehumidifier and strong fans that helped drown out the noise at night. We will be staying here again!!! read more

What a WONDERFUL Escape!!! This place is close to the Kona airport, but you don't hear the airport noise at all. Its up on the mountain side and its sooo beautiful! The B&B sits up above the coffee fields and you look out over the coffee tree tops! Its so peaceful here. You can choose to spend the day sitting and relaxing under the gazebo or in your lawn chair watching the beautiful sunsets every night! Its just a short drive to Kona shopping district and the beaches. Its only 1 1/2 hrs drive to the other side of the Island so this is a perfect place to stay while exploring all the Big Island has to offer. The B&B itself is beautiful, clean and very comfortable. The breakfast every morning was large and delicious and many of the fruits and vegetables being served are grown on the farm. We got a tour of the coffee plantation and all the plants growing on the farm, including the cocoa and banana plants and we got to sample them too! The owners, Linda and Dan are wonderful people and very knowledgeable about everything on the property and the Island. We really enjoyed talking to them. We are so thrilled that we chose to stay here. We loved it and we highly recommend it to anyone coming to the Big Island of HI! read more

Wonderful place. Easy drive to the airport and tourist attractions. The hosts Hans and Marsha are very interesting people with great stories and they put out a very nice breakfast. The rooms were clean, quiet and well appointed. A common kitchen and sitting room is provided as well as a nice back porch with a spectacular view. This is a working organic coffee farm, so there is lots to see right on the property. Hans is an interesting fellow, very plain spoken and direct, but quite knowledgeable on many subjects. If you get a chance to talk with him you should take it. read more

The owner Hans and Martha were very welcoming full of tons of knowledge about their Farm and about the island in general. I read up about this place before my stay here and I read all the good reviews as well as the bad. I feel like the good reviews come from guests who came with an open mind and who really wanted to have a good Hawaii experience. The bad reviews mostly came from those who look for something to complain about in general. Many of the reviews felt like Hans was rude and unpleasant. I expected more reviews for this establishment... I don't think it's quite fair that there's only one review that gave this place a 1-star. Here is my experience at the Mango Sunset BnB. This place is a true BnB. Reservations are super easy. It's all online! (Me: Honu Room $120. 11/26-11/28.) If you look at their reservations, they are usually fully booked. First, I should clarify that this place is not a hotel; it is a BnB. Second, I would also like to clarify to you that there is a huge difference between staying at a nice hotel and staying at a nice BnB. The main difference is the amount of respect you are willing to give to hotels and BnBs. At a hotel, you can act like an animal and do whatever you want to the room that you spent tons for. BnBs are unique in that they give you a clean homey/homemade feel like staying at someone's home for a lesser price and a beautiful experience. Like a baby that first opened its eyes to discover the world, this place is VERY homey and beautifully built and decorated. Built from scratch. The pillars are made of the Ohia redwood trees that grow on the island. I was very impressed by how it elicited such a comforting response. The photos on their website are very accurate. Marsha invited me and and we took a tour of the BnB. The amenities and everything you have access to is, again, like home. When you enter, you need you take your shoes off as to protect their bamboo flooring. Please be respectful of the property! I slept in the Honu guestroom - Bamboo furnishing. Sea turtle theme. Feels romantic like you're sleeping by the sea. Mattress is on the firm side, which is perfect for me. Queen size bed. (IMAGE: http://i.imgur.com/ktk67Ls.jpg?1) The bathrooms - Shower stall or bathtub makes no difference to me. The bathrooms are very clean and upscale. You can tell that they paid a lot to incorporate the nice sink and shower. The sink is like an ivory/pearl marble. They painted the walls a shade of mango, so when light escapes into the bathroom, the bathroom illuminates. The shower door is a glass depiction of sea animal swimming in the sea. (IMAGE: http://i.imgur.com/Vxmvz4p.jpg?1) The only qualm I have about the shower is that the drain is a little slow. It doesn't affect my experience however. Step outside the room to viewside, you have yourself a gazebo and patio that overlooks the coffee farm and the Lanai. Here's a photo that includes the gazebo and patio and the Ohia pillars that I mentioned earlier. The four guest rooms are built next to each other, all with the view of the ocean directly, and if you can, you should watch the amazing mango sunset, hence the name of their BnB. I never got to during my stay since I had so much to do in the short 2 days there. Breakfast - The 1st morning, I had scrambled eggs w/ homegrown herbs. I love homemade eggs!! At home, I use organic eggs and homegrown herbs. This beats the powdered eggs that hotels usually offer any day. I also had fresh fruit that the Eckerts also grow on their land. Marsha also served Portuguese sausage and a tomato/homegrown basil/balsamic vinaigrette dish. Light, healthy, and delicious. I had seconds and thirds. She also served a pot of 100% Kona coffee. Please try this coffee... If you have never been able to distinguish between true coffee and Starbucks, you might be able to now! I recommend drinking it black. I know a good cup of coffee when you don't need to add milk and sugar. Trust me, you'll develop an appreciation for coffee after your experience here. The 2nd morning, I had a Belgian waffle with a homemade fruity syrup. The syrup is to die for. It's syrup with a hint of passionfruit (meaning it's not sour) with honey-like consistency. She accompanied me for breakfast and when I had to go, I excused myself politely. She didn't continuously talk to me as mentioned in the previous review. We both instigated conversation based on our curiosity. About Hans and Marsha.They do have WWOOF interns who help them harvest/process coffee cherries. There is nothing wrong with either individual. They are just really intelligent and polite people. Sue K.'s review also made her sound like a helpless woman, but she is quite the opposite. Mind that they will call you up for bfast if you did not leave a note that you will not be having bfast with them. Like hotels, BnBs have rules. Do your due diligence and read the simple rules before being an ass. If you have a behavior issue and don't understand BnBs, then maybe BnBs are not for you. I wish I could write more, but am limited. Remember, be respectful as guests and not an animal at a hotel and your experience will be a beautiful one.... read more

1. Don't believe the photos on their website, they have a great photographer but the place isn't special. 2. Strange (not in a nice way) innkeepers. 3. Great view but not worth the price. 4. NO bathtubs! 5. Dirty shower. Bedroom smelled like mold. Do you like getting a talking to with your breakfast? Are you really into coffee but don't much care about how comfortable or pleasant your room is? If so, this is the place for you! As for the innkeepers, I do feel bad for Marsha. It seems Hans likes to rule with an iron fist... or just a loud voice. I hope she's ok. When first I called mango sunset I wasn't sure everything was ok with Marsha. She sounded hesitant but eventually offered me a room for that night. This was the only B&B we could find at the last minute and without a three night minimum. My sweetheart and I decided to take the room. Upon arriving Marsha greeted us and made us aware of amenities like the washing machine we could use, but not right now because it was loud(a few moments later a farmhand was using it). She took my credit card and said several times, "I'll be back with this." I began to doubt... She did come back and we specified we didn't need anything special for breakfast -just a little fresh fruit because we were both eating raw food at the time. Marsha asked several times about what we ate and I kept trying to assure her she didn't need to go to any lengths. She kept at it and I said that if she felt uncomfortable with fruit, she could bring us nothing and if she felt uncomfortable with that she could give us a discount. She seemed a little defensive about this but she did say breakfast was served an the lanai at 7am. We were weary so I wasn't so glad to have to clean someone else's hair out of the shower before using it. It was that kind of short curly hair no one wants to clean up. Marsha had said she was waiving the "cleaning fee". Glorious. he bed wasn't comfortable either, I couldn't get to sleep easily. "Coffee is made, breakfast is served!" woke us from the hallway. Breakfast included awesome exotic fruits and Hans loudly telling his life's story ~ for about 45 minutes. There was another couple there nodding along but my sweetheart was not into it. He asked for a little quiet and Hans became angry. He told us we could "meditate" anywhere on the property. He came over and stood over our table and began telling us all about how guests at a B&B are supposed to behave and saying that everyone else wanted to talk. (the other couple managed to politely decline further conversation). He also pointed out that fresh fruit wasn't easy to provide. He said he had woken early to prepare it for us. I wanted to give Hans the benefit of the doubt and I pointed out to my sweetie that we were in their special place and that B&B hosts can be weird. But you know, my baby was totally right. $140 does suggest we receive some kind service and their website does promise "pampering". fail. Hans, maybe meditating is a good idea. read more

A relaxing, personable B&B in a beautiful estate, organic coffee farm! The location is great for access to/from the airport and the Western side of the Big Island. Daily breakfasts were delicious and featured the farm's coffee (Lyman's). We booked through Hotels.com and did experience a slight difference in terms from what was communicated on Hotels.com and the terms of the B&B (Hotels.com said it was a free cancellation, and the B&B said it would be a $25 charge). We really loved our stay here. It is convenient to Kona and has an amazing view!! Our hosts made a wonderful homemade breakfast each day, which we ate in the gazebo overlooking the ocean. The location in the hills made it cooler and gave us a panoramic view of the town below. The coffee, grown on the premises, was delicious. Marsha and Hans were fun to talk to and made every effort to accommodate dietary preferences and schedules. The rooms were cozy, and we enjoyed the dog and cat who said hello once in a while. We LOVED LOVED LOVED our stay here. The only things that people complained about in the reviews - that it's not child friendly and that there are two cats and a dog on the property- were what sold us. We wanted something different from the corporate hotels by the beach, and that's what we got. The views were stunning, our room was cozy, and the coffee was the best anywhere. It is a 5 mile trip down the hill to Kona, and it was nice to come back to the cool hillside at the end of a busy day. The owners have breakfast with us every morning and we got to know them and their family, and they are the best local tour guides that you can find. The property is a working farm, and they grow and roast the coffee on the premises. We went to Kona to get married and we had a wonderful time. We will definitely be back at the Mango Sunset B&B. read more

This is a quaint B&B with a lot of local flavor. The rooms are adequate. They are clean but kinda small. Every morning we had an amazing breakfast ...taro pancakes with coconut syrup, Mac nut crepes, etc always accompanied with great fresh fruit , juice, and 100% organic kona coffee. We got a free coffee tour included with our stay. Hans and Marcia own and run the B&B they were always helpful and very knowledgeable. We stayed here for two weeks and we will definitely stay here again. If you are looking for an inexpensive B&B in the Kona area check them out. read more
