Our family of four had an AMAZING time at the Dragonfly. Barbara and Michael were wonderful hosts. Our room was so comfortable and we LOVED the shower (outdoor feel, but private with lava rock floor and bamboo walls). We watched the sunset from the labyrinth/yoga deck (awesome!). The breakfast was delicious (homemade granola, fresh fruit, nuts, eggs, toast, yogurt). My kids got to feed geckos, play with the friendly cat and dog on the premise, and got a personalized flower essence mixture from Barbara. The Dragonfly felt like a home away from home with its eclectic hippie vibe. I can't wait to come back some day! :)

If you're visiting Kona and want a unique, quiet, home away from home experience versus the resort vacation, this is for you. perfect for the yoga loving, nature admiring, free spirited weary traveler in search of a serene, low tech, vegan/non toxic lodging. The entire stay was like visiting your eccentric aunt and her friends. we Let ourselves in through the front gate, and followed the signs up the property straight into Barbra's kitchen where she greeted us with love (and many animal friends!). The property is compromised of multiple bungalows, and artsy tiny homes, giving a 70's commune vibe with an island paradise twist including fruitful lush gardens, and a giant colorful yoga/fitness space overlooking the sea Large enough for an entire class. About 35 minutes from the airport(KOA), 15 minutes to the nearest grocery(choice mart), 10 minutes to the nearest resturant (Shaka tacos was phenomenal), and 7 minutes to the main attraction, snorkeling at Pu'uhonua O'Honaunau / Place of Refuge also known by its colonized name Two Step beach. we rented snorkel gear from Barbra on the property for $10/day which was helpful especially being in a more rural area/island. I would definitely stay again. I loved meeting other travelers, pleasant conversations or a new age spiritual /health/healing atmosphere that I usually get traveling in hostels with the benefit of some private space. will definitely visit again!! Amazing people only place. My one note is they really should hire a full time manager to oversee operations and offload managerial workload from the owner. Jan-Cel was the most professional person in hospitality I've ever met.

Located just over a mile off the main route, and clearly marked with signage, Dragonfly Ranch is by far the most unique, bed and breakfast located in Kona's Captain Cook area.  Easily park at the base of the bed and breakfast and walk up to the most beautiful overlook of the unobsured SW view of the ocean and lush tropical forest.  Smells of native flowers swirl around you and the feeling of peace and tranquility take over.  The eclectic establishment has several private spaces to stay in, some larger than others with kitchens and private living space, others closer to the main kitchen and common space overlook, perfect for single travelers and families alike.  All rooms are equipped with everything you may need including ionized water,  stored lovingly in large gallon size glass pitchers, along with organic soap and shampoo/conditioner.  This is a sacred place to unwind and reflect and there are many different spots on the property to enjoy the tranquility of Hawaii.   Read books from the guest's library, lay in the hammock and feel the soft breeze, practice yoga on the incredible rainbow deck above, walk around the grounds and check out all the amazing sculptures and gardens spread throughout; Dragonfly Ranch is just filled with love and you can see it in every way.  The owner Barbara, always creates time to get to know each guest and is welcoming and so knowledgeable about the area, flower essences and many other topics. She has lived in Hawaii for over 35 years and she has many suggestions for day trips or where to eat organic dinner and treats every guest as they are each special and important.  Well rounded and kind staff are always on-site and can accommodate your needs and also have local suggestions.   This is a very unique experience as you will find bright colors, lots of art, and peace and quiet and it is unlike any other place you will ever stay in.  It's very easy to have privacy in your own space but also easy to find a space where others congregate and share laughter and organic coffee together.   The Dragonfly Ranch is blessed with such privacy and lush gardens,  you may never want to leave!  Unplug, unwind, empty your worries away and fill your time on Big Island with happiness.  I suggest staying 3 nights at least and using Dragonfly Ranch as a space to come back to after a day's travel because it is so peaceful and lush.  An organic breakfast is included so it will fuel you up for day journeys around the area and it is wonderful to come back and sleep the night through away from the hustle and bustle of touristy spots.

This cat lived at the ranch basically became my cat over the week. She would sleep in my room then leave early to get her breakfast

I spent 10 days at the dragonfly ranch in February on the big island of Hawaii. They bill themselves as an eco bed and breakfast. But it was a lot more like fancy camping than a hotel. The place is way out in the middle of nowhere in a rural farming community. It's run by Barb an old hippie who built the place with her mom and has been there 45 years. She's very kind and radiates a warn calm motherly energy she is an amazing and interesting person. The first day I was there she gently reminded me to put down my phone and enjoy Hawaii. She tried unsuccessfully to get me to stop drinking energy drinks. As far as the staff it was very casual you were never quite sure who really worked there but everyone was nice. The ranch is wild and LOUD as soon as the sun sets. Coqui frogs, crickets, bugs, and wild roosters. A few times a wild pig came running through the bushes and rustled my shower curtain scaring me. The wild roosters would start around 4 am and go all day there had to be 10+ wild roosters living nearby. They would come down to the garden with their group of hens to look for food and to check out the chickens in the coop. Then the sun would come up and it's birds and what ever else start making noise. Never knew the country was so loud. My room gave me the feeling sleeping outdoors 3 walls were just made of screens. The bed was very comfortable but I sometimes picked bugs and leaves out of my bed before going to sleep. I did leave the cute lizards in my room they seemed harmless. I showered outdoors sometimes the water was warm or hot just depended on how sunny of a day it was. I ate vegan breakfast of oatmeal like hot cereals and fresh organic fruits. All of this was way out of my comfort zone and very unexpected. The ranch had a nice spiritual energy once I was open to it. There was little to do so I had lots of time for quiet reflection and meditation. I just say that had I spiritual experience there and left the ranch changed. Very calming and relaxing place that feels disconnected from the world. Very unique and definitely worth a visit. It wasn't a very touristy part of Hawaii to start with and many of the touristy businesses were either temporarily or partially closed or out of business entirely. We spent 50$ renting a kayak and I got a decent but overpriced Hawaiian massage at a spa in town. Besides that almost everything else we did was outdoors and free. Lots of long road trips and hikes. I ate most my meals from small local type restaurants or roadside stands with meals served mostly in cardboard containers. The whole trip was wild and nothing like I imagined it would be and definitely not how I normally travel. But it ended up being exactly what I needed. This place is fantastic and I would highly recommend it

The majority of the reviews here are correct: Dragonfly lounge really isn't for everyone. If you find yourself booking here, keep an open mind. Bathrooms are "outdoor" with naturelike surroundings. You're basically standing on rock and there are leaves and occasional bugs underneath you. This is "glorified"camping if you will, with a hint of community-like hipster charm. If you're a germophobe, don't stay here. However, they do their best to keep it clean. There are a few very friendly animals roaming around. Albeit it being unique, I found it very relaxing and therapeutic. There's a labyrinth where you can get a good morning stretch it and if you time it just right, to catch the sunrise/sunset. It's situated right on top of the worker's living quarters. Which brings me to my next note: a place truly says something if people choose to live and work there; they take pride in their place. All the workers I ran into were more than willing to help me, check in with me about my stay, and they didn't even demand that I pay right up front. They were really chill about when I paid...AND I was super lucky to get a last minute reservation. The Writer's Studio was $175 and came with three beds; perfect for a little family. Breakfast is delicious and vegan. The workers were making smoothies as I was eating and eating what they were serving themselves. I always believe if people take pride in where they work, it really shows in how they express themselves. This place definitely has its charm....so much so that my boyfriend decided to propose here! It's a place we would love to return to and hope that it stays as a hidden gem.

We stayed in the Writer's Studio room. This room is so spacious and beautifully detailed in bright green colors. There is no glass windows here, just screens. Waking up to the sounds of birds here is unbelievably remarkable. This is one of our best experiences we had in a bed and breakfast. We really did feel like we were "inside the outdoors". The shower is outside but it is still very private and covered. They serve organic breakfast with fruit that they pick from the trees growing in their yard. They even grow their own vegetable garden. We have never seen such a beautiful yoga studio before. The views from it is breathtaking. Dragonfly Ranch truly is an amazing place to connect with nature. Many come to Hawaii and stay in large resorts and hotels but miss the true feel of how life would feel if you lived in Hawaii. I'm so glad that I spent my 33rd birthday here.

The Drangonfly Ranch is a refuge in time and space for those who seek solace and peace. It is in a country setting and rustic, but very comfortable, eclectic, and artsy. Being in a foresty setting, one communes with nature - flowers everywhere and an occasional gecko visitor. I stayed in the Dolphin room, it was simple but charming in a tropical style, with an outdoor, but private bathroom and shower. Barbara and Anita, the hosts, were wonderful and accommodating. It felt like I was staying with my beloved worldly, warm, intelligent, and kindhearted aunties. Barbara is an expert in flower essences and using flowers for cures. It was nurturing to be helped by her with a mixture of her essences. The breakfast was a beautifully presented spread of freshly cooked whole grains, fruits, toast and jam and great coffee. I was able to take my little black poodle with me, who got to socialize with the funny little dogs on the property. I felt really welcomed and it SO nice to feel at ease with kind and friendly people, yummy food, and cute pets. I highly recommend staying here if you would like to experience true Aloha with the cozy, homey, charm of authentic glam, hippie, Hawaii within a peaceful and communal setting.....It is a unique and precious bubble in time. Viva Dragonfly Ranch! It was an awesome experience! Thank you!

I passed many happy hours out there, soaking in the fresh air, taking pictures, and cracking fresh macadamia nuts. We stayed in the Hula room at the far end of the house. The bathroom was private and stocked with basic amenities, and the bed was perfectly comfortable. We could sit there and stare out the screen door at the distant water below. Thomas and Sharon were gracious hosts. They were most always nearby if we had questions, but they also granted us space and privacy. And the breakfasts....! Our two mornings there were among the highlights of our trip to Hawaii. We sat on the lanai and dined on fresh baked goods and a wide assortment of fruits, many from their property. I'm now totally spoiled by the massive avocados that they grow. One thing of note about the area: South Kona features a lot of narrow, winding roads tucked along the long slope to the ocean, and there are some steep driveways and roads. Keep this in mind when you rent a car on the Big Island. Whenever I get the chance to return to Hawaii, I hope to stay at the Kona Bayview Inn again. It was, by far, the favorite place at which we stayed during our trip.

Great place to stay...love it!…read more We stayed at the Kona Bayview Inn for a week and it exceeded our expectations! Thomas and Sharon were really great hosts and are such nice people who truly aim to please! The breakfasts were amazing...every morning they served something different and delicious and there was never a shortage of food! There was always something homemade, hot and yummy and lots of fresh island fruits, many of which were grown on their property. There was Kona coffee (my husband is a big Kona coffee fan and loved this!), a nice selection of island fruit teas and fresh juices, and often they served homemade bread with freshly made preserves. I can't say enough about how great the breakfasts were...we looked forward to them every morning! We miss them! We stayed in the Honu room and our room was clean, tastefully decorated, and had everything we needed. The bed was comfortable and we enjoyed leaving our windows open at night so we could fall asleep listening to the sounds of nature! There were some things available to us in our room which you typically don't have available to you at other places like a cooler, beach bag, beach mat, beach towels and a clothes hanger for drying your clothes outside; and this was really nice! They also gave us snorkel gear and beach chairs to use; and we enjoyed snorkeling at some really great nearby spots. Thomas and Sharon were always so helpful and accommodating and offered wonderful suggestions for restaurants and places to visit in the area! The Kona Bayview Inn turned out to be exactly the type of place we were looking for as we needed some relaxation time. We took some time to just sit and read and enjoy the beautiful views. We also explored the beautiful property. We also really enjoyed the fantastic sunsets over Kealakekua Bay. This area is very tropical and peaceful; but yet you are not too far from some really great dining spots and town. I really recommend this place and we definitely plan to stay here again...it's such a lovely place!

I'm having MAJOR regrets after staying at Aloha Guest House…read more 1. Every window I look out will never look like the view from the Kohola Room. 2. Svetlana's incredible breakfast with fresh organic farm fruit and eggs will not arrive to my home table at 7:55 am. 3. I forgot to buy her lilikoi butter before I left. Now what do I do? 4. I'm constantly planning my next trip back. These are serious regrets that I will have to discuss with Lee and Svetlana during my next visit. They work incredibly hard to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Think of this stay as staying with your aunt and uncle. They will feed you, help you, and make you feel so loved. Breakfast is too good to be true. Everything Svetlana makes is a long journey that arrives to your plate casually like it's no big deal. Her macadamia nut butter will haunt my dreams. The Kohola Room has the breath-taking room. Sunsets while tucked into the comfortable framed bed is a luxury I cannot describe. The drive up to the house is rough but that's the only tough part of this stay. You'll be on a farm in Hawaii--that's the cool part. You will hear birds, frogs, and the cow songs. Skip the boring resort stay and enjoy the real beauty of Big Island.
