There was coffee cake for afternoon tea when I got there. The porch is the best part of this place. It overlooks the mountain with a great view of the water and forests below. Breakfast was nice since it came with avocado, cut papaya, a piece of breakfast cake and smoothie as well as tea/coffee. I did like meeting the geckos that look like the GEICO gecko during breakfast who were wanting fruit. Cons: there's no AC. Also I was woken up by I think a rooster at 5 am. Roads are severely dark that you cannot differentiate between driving/reversing onto road or out to sea *yikes*. Once you finally arrive at your destination, keep on driving up the hill until you reach the end. Don't forget, it is crazy dark outside, don't be alarmed by the sounds of nature. You'll park to the side next to the other 4 cars by the garage (not into it) and quietly find directions on a pin with your name on it. Come quietly inside as you make your way to the room. If you survive the night (which, you will), you'll find yourself on what looks like heaven; beautiful oceanview windows overlooking the bay. When you come down, you'll be greeted by the sweetest angel, Hannah. You'll find her in the kitchen in the morning making an all you can eat breakfast. Don't be rude! Say hello, grab a coffee, make your way to the patio and find a table. Hannah will let you know when all is ready based on first-out on the patio. When asked what was my favorite meal in Hawaii, hands down, I say Hannah's breakfast. She made delicious Banana Nut Waffles topped with macadamia nuts tossed in coconut oil and syrup. In addition, she's boiled eggs, cooked turkey bacon, and has sliced up fresh tropical fruits. Don't forget to try her freshly made smoothies made with guava YUMMMM!!!

Barbara and her team are lovely to be around and make you feel like you are a part of their community for a few days, rather than just "guests." The amenities are wonderful, the beds super comfortable, and the atmosphere is one of pure peace and belonging. Add to that the beautiful symphony of singing frogs, wind chimes, and rainforest sounds and it is about as perfect as you can imagine. We loved having access to the outdoor communal kitchen--with all the amenities that a great cook could want, and it was a welcome treat to enter the new year with a centering walk around the illuminarium maze, letting go of the things that have stopped serving us and embracing our intentions for the year to come. I can't recommend this enough as an out-of-the-ordinary Big Island experience.

We were here for two weeks, and during that time we were treated more like family than guests. Of course all the expected things were done superbly - great breakfasts, lovely room, etc. But, it was the way we were introduced to local life that really stood out. We went to the Friday night fish fry with a local band - twice. Angela and her daughter joined us for a day at a hidden beach just 15 minutes away. We ate at every local restaurant, all of which we would return to without hesitation. We even spent an afternoon making baskets on the lanai from palm fronds. We did a few of the usual tourist things (volcano, waterfalls, snorkeling), but the big difference was a result of the tips from our hosts. I cannot recommend this as a wonderful place to relax and get to know a side of Hawaii that very, very few people will ever see. Thank you, Angela and Darrin for making our trip truly magical. I'm constantly planning my next trip back. These are serious regrets that I will have to discuss with Lee and Svetlana during my next visit. They work incredibly hard to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Think of this stay as staying with your aunt and uncle. They will feed you, help you, and make you feel so loved. Breakfast is too good to be true. Everything Svetlana makes is a long journey that arrives to your plate casually like it's no big deal. Her macadamia nut butter will haunt my dreams. The Kohola Room has the breath-taking room. Sunsets while tucked into the comfortable framed bed is a luxury I cannot describe. The drive up to the house is rough but that's the only tough part of this stay. You'll be on a farm in Hawaii--that's the cool part. You will hear birds, frogs, and the cow songs. Honu Kai provides a unique yet comfortable stay. This was my first time at a b&b so I had a lot of questions. Months prior to booking, I called and texted Amy with my questions, and she always got back to me quickly. Location was great because target is only 10 min away if you need to stock up on the essentials. Lots of amazing restaurants are within 15 minutes as well. The property is so beautiful and well maintained. It truly felt like a second home. It has a peaceful and zen feeling that is extra magical at night due to the coquis. Our bed was so comfortable and our room was cleaned everyday. The fresh breakfast everyday with coffee and juice was excellent as well. The fruit was always fresh and sweet! I'm someone who appreciates quiet mornings alone so I was unsure about having breakfast with other people, but I'm so glad we did it. It's a really amazing and unique experience to sit and eat with people from all over the world! I truly miss sitting on the porch watching the birds and chickens on the lawn. What really made our experience special was Amy. She is so friendly, personable, and just a genuinely kind soul! Absolutely loved her! Our time here wouldn't have been the same without her. She truly goes above and beyond and really cares. 100000% recommend Honu Kai. We will definitely be back!

Unfortunately, with less than a month to go and only 4 rooms total was not able to get extra nights here. The one night we did have here was exactly like how I imagine old Hawai`i would look like. Just a short drive to downtown Kona for food and even Costco but far enough that you feel like you can disconnect. With so much shared public area and again only 4 rooms, nothing ever felt crowded. You had access to an outdoor dining area, gardens, sundeck, grill, plates, utensils, your own shelf in the fridge and even snorkel and beach gear. The only issue I had was when I used the hot tub, my eyes started stinging so not sure if it was overly chlorinated so only lasted less than 5 minutes as I kept tearing up. The rooms were comfortable, very thought out and has such nice little touches that make you feel at home. Only thing to note is since they are in such a tropical setting, they do not want you eating in your room to avoid ant infestations, etc.. Again, no big deal as they have a spacious dining area right downstairs that we had all to ourselves when we wanted to eat or snack. Innkeeper Amy was friendly, welcoming, and made sure we were taken care of. The breakfast in the morning was better than what you can get at a restaurant and the ambiance just cannot be beat. The sound of the rain while we ate our takeout dinner was so soothing and relaxing and the sound of the birds on a sunny morning paired well with that breakfast. We honestly didn't want to leave that we lingered after check out enjoying our lunch at their public area. I honestly could not ask for anything more.

Thomas and Sharon were gracious hosts. They were most always nearby if we had questions, but they also granted us space and privacy. And the breakfasts....! Our two mornings there were among the highlights of our trip to Hawaii. We sat on the lanai and dined on fresh baked goods and a wide assortment of fruits, many from their property. I'm now totally spoiled by the massive avocados that they grow. One thing of note about the area: South Kona features a lot of narrow, winding roads tucked along the long slope to the ocean, and there are some steep driveways and roads. Keep this in mind when you rent a car on the Big Island. Whenever I get the chance to return to Hawaii, I hope to stay at the Kona Bayview Inn again. I can't say enough about how great the breakfasts were...we looked forward to them every morning! We miss them! We stayed in the Honu room and our room was clean, tastefully decorated, and had everything we needed. The bed was comfortable and we enjoyed leaving our windows open at night so we could fall asleep listening to the sounds of nature! There were some things available to us in our room which you typically don't have available to you at other places like a cooler, beach bag, beach mat, beach towels and a clothes hanger for drying your clothes outside; and this was really nice! They also gave us snorkel gear and beach chairs to use; and we enjoyed snorkeling at some really great nearby spots. Thomas and Sharon were always so helpful and accommodating and offered wonderful suggestions for restaurants and places to visit in the area! The Kona Bayview Inn turned out to be exactly the type of place we were looking for as we needed some relaxation time. We took some time to just sit and read and enjoy the beautiful views.
