May be this is only a Hong Kong thing: for every vegetarian restaurant, there is always a section…read moreat the entrance that sells all those vegetarian dim sums and puddings. Bean curd sheet wraps, veggie siu mai, nori rolls, you name them. Instead of actually going into the restaurant and have a proper meal, I am more inclined to just buying a few items from the take away section and walk as i eat. And this is pretty much a reflex to me to go and have a look at the display cabinet to see what looks good from these vegetarian restaurant. One of the must have items for me is the bean curd sheet wraps filled with mixed veggies inside. The sheet is most often chewy but it is supposed to be crisped up from the frying while the interior stays crunchy and light. However, probably due to the fact that they are made in huge batches, the wraps are very likely to be greasy both on the outside as well as the inside. I have a poor habit of taking a piece of tissue paper and remove the excess grease; not just patting on the surface, but also squeeze the lifeblood out of the roll to make sure there's no oil remain. It is always surprising to me that you need more than one to completely remove the grease; imagine what will happen when you eat all these altogether... I am not sure whether the excess grease is supposed to be part of the eating experience or it is just that I have not yet found the perfect roll yet; but still I am hopeful. Truth be told, the wrap of this joint tasted not bad after me trampling of it using multiple piece of tissue paper.

There are many faux-meat options as well as more veggie based options and I think everything was well seasoned and delicious. I tried the beyond burger (teriyaki), fish ball curry, as well as the Hainanese chicken. I think the most impressive dish was the chicken because it looked the part and tasted good. The texture was on all the items was decent but you can definitely tell it's not meat - but I think it was definitely good enough if you consider the effort that went into creating the full dishes. You can grab food or snacks to-go in the little market place they have, or you can dine in with their very large menu of vegan and vegetarian options. The service is super friendly and the menu is easy to read and order from. There's also a huge diversity of items from Asian to more Western items you can most likely get your fix here. I loved the quotes on the wall and how they try to educate people about the food they serve as well as the impact that it makes. If you're in HK I'd highly recommend checking out one of their many locations around the city.

Given the limited choices for my vegan friends, this is a pretty decent restaurant. This super casual restaurant is canteen styled. You know like your average Ikea restaurant. It's nestled in the corner of Mong Kok's new shopping arcade, The Forest so it's not too busy. Which means you can sit for awhile and catch up on friend time. The seats aren't the comfiest, and the tables are small. But it'll do. It's Mong Kok after-all. There's chargers by the benches for you to charge up that mobile... or... laptop! Looking for a vegetarian bao to settle that "bao crave"? Why yes they have it!

On a global standard, food is just mediocre, but on par with Hong Kong standards nowadays…read more A few reasons, perhaps because the chef is not vegan and is approaching from a meat eaters perspective, he doesn't know how to showcase veggies in its full glory. The activated charcoal bun was a bit of a disappointment. Typical of Hong Kong western buns I guess but not good from a European bread perspective. It doesn't have intention. It's just a black bun. Whereas a sourdough bun is sour, a pretzel bun is chewy, they all add a distinct texture and flavor. The activated charcoal bun was just a topper and didn't meddle well with the burger as a whole dish. From an American vegan perspective it lacks flavor and innovation. From a Chinese perspective I think it didn't fully utilize the resources of chinese ingredients and contribute the flare in anyway. My review is also coming from someone who doesn't like hk's take on western cuisine. It's just horrible western food that is dumbed down with mayonnaise and masking flavor instead of accentuating. I like the concept of this place and really hope the food improves. I would also suggest searing both sides of the impossible burger and keeping the center a bit medium and definitely not overcooking it. That way it has a nice smoky seared flavor but isn't dried out on the inside. The latte wasn't particularly good. Pricing is a bit expensive when I can get much more innovative and flavorful vegan food in the states.

The cauliflower cheese with potatoes, almonds and some quinoa was absolutely delish. fried to perfection with a very crispy exterior and soft cooked interior. Simple dish done right, subtle flavours, small salad on the side. It would've been exemplified with a nice lip smacking sauce or chutney. The crab burger had a lot of curry coleslaw. While tasty, the coleslaw overpowered with the sheer quantity of it. The ratio of the patty to the slaw was skewed. And that was my only complaint. The teriyaki soba noodles were colder than room temperature. Not sure if their intentions were to serve them cold. I doubt because the pan-fried teriyaki tofu, which was superb, the roasted pumpkin and other vegetables were warm. Loved the industrial look and feel of the place. The food, while good, didn't hit a home run. More photos and details on the blog - thevegetarianvoyager
