Mushroom soup was nothing special. Fish was very tender but the sauce that it sat in was not very appealing. Duck was a bit chewy and did not have enough flavor. The sweet potato purée did not have any additional flavor which was made dish flat in flavors and texture. Crème brûlée had food flavor and a fun presentation with flame lit up at the table but lacking some fresh tart fruit to balance the sweetness of the custard. Every dish has the same garnish which was rather boring.

So, the boyfriends birthday seemed like an excellent opportunity to try it. We ordered 2 glasses of champagne on arrival and cosied up in the corner of this small, intimate and romantic restaurant. There was plenty to choose from on the menu but in the end i opted for a salmon and avocado tartar for starter and the beef fillet for main course. Both were delicious, with a special mention to the dauphinoise potatoes that came as a side-order! For desert i opted for a crepe soufle - this too was magnificent. Overall, the meal came in at £150.00 with a bottle of Sancere and was well worth it in my opinion. I just need another special reason to visit again!!

After hearing good things about this place for gluten free, I called in and decided to order from their lunch menu. It was around £11 for 2 courses. For my starter, I ordered the Eggs Florentine which is a poached egg on gluten free bread with hollandaise sauce, and sadly it was a giant, bland mess. I didn't really like the sauce, there was too much of it and it got messy really quickly, the dish as a whole was poor, unseasoned and the bread was burnt. The staff didn't seem friendly, service overall seemed slow, they had a sense of arrogance and shock when I sent my food back as well. One thing that shocked me was that the old fashioned decor Cote had only one member of staff working, with the other looking like he was in 'training', running around like a headless chicken with my food before someone else brought it, based on what was to come I'd have wished he would have run off with my food. For my main, I ordered the seabass and again experienced similar problems, the fish its-self was too oily and watery to the point I ended up leaving it, the only thing of decent quality was the chive potatoes which for me isn't right. Sadly, due to issues with the overall feel inside Cote, food quality and service I feel Cote deserves a one-star rating with the main positive being the use of 'Gluten Free' flags in the food to minimise the risk of cross-contamination etc.

Mention French cuisine, and images of a piece of mangetout in a dot of "jus" on a plate spring to mind. This is SO not the case at La Boheme, but before I go into details about the food, let me describe the whole experience. This restaurant is owned by Olivier and Adele Troalen who have created an absolute treasure. Firstly and most importantly, you HAVE to book here. No matter what night of the week or what time you go, I will say it again;" YOU HAVE TO BOOK". This is everybody's favourite place and can be booked up a couple weeks on advance so if Valentines Day is approaching, fellas I would book before Christmas! Secondly, as you walk in, you are seated in the pleasant bar area, and sometimes given complimentary canapes as you peruse the menu. Good idea this as it cuts down the time you sit at your table, deliberating over the Steak or the Sea bass. Decor is muted greys and jade greens and is the epitome of class. Once seated, food is served quickly by lovely staff. The Maitre 'D is almost a caricature, small, round and a bundle of energy he is totally lovely and makes every customer feel special. Now for the food! I always take advantage of "Le Menu Fixe" which is 3 courses for £22.50 and £8.95 for children under 10 years old. For this miniscule sum, you have a choice from 10 different starters and 12 different mains. I must recommend the scallops for starter, they are the best I have ever tasted, and the fillet of beef and the Gressingham duck is too die for. Everything is served with beautifully cooked seasonal veg in light and lovely sauces. When the desserts arrive they are like pieces of art work on the plates and I get all greedy and have the "Assiette Gourmande" which is 5 perfect puddings on a plate. Seriously, who can resist a mini apple crumble next to a mini creme brulee? When you leave La Boheme you are so full you think you won't eat for a week. This is incredible food for incredible value and I can't say a bad word about it.

In fact, though the décor and layout inside is similar, its actually not a mere bar but a fine French brasserie. Its open as early as 8am for breakfast and throughout the day for lunch, dinner, coffee or drinks. Its pretty pricey but the food is of very high quality, making it worth the money if you fancy treating yourself. There's also often an offer on, but this may require you to print out a voucher so its worth checking the website before you go. The best value is probably the prix fixe menu, which is 1, 2 or 3 courses starting from around £7 at lunchtime and £12.50 for dinner. Personally though, if you are going to Chez Gerard you're better off completely splashing out, and going for the demi poulet from the a la carte menu, half a grilled corn-fed chicken with herbs (they don't spoilt it), pommes frites (chips innit) and a gorgeous garlic butter sauce (wehey!). May oui, may oui, un petit mange tout. Bon. Bon. Bon.

Magical? Chemical?…read more The alchemist is not only a nice surrounding to sit in but the service and food are great and delicious. When we checked in and were asked if there were any allergies we made jokes about my husband's allergy to cinnamon - that we would not need to worry about out it before desert. We ordered a few items from the menu - which is a very delicious mix of classics with some twists (tempura fried fish and chips for example). Order was taken and a couple minutes later the manager came and said "I am sorry - but the sauce to the fish contains a bit of cinnamon" wow! We change the order of course and the manager came back to the table asking if we would be worried about cross termination. We have been not and everything went well after that. Great service. The food itself plays with the alchemist theme for example the chorizo meatballs come with a syringe to inject your own amount of cheese (what you think? Yes of course o injected the whole Syringe into the little delicious meatball duhh). The menu consist of a lot of small items which makes me so happy since I can have so many bites of different things and at the alchemist they are all worth it! And of course classics like burger, salads and sandwiches alongside their mains. The menu is not too big but literally has something for everyone. You have to try the crispy pork skins! After we had been told that the crispy fish contains cinnamon my husband learned they offer their "chicken in a basket" as a vegetarian version as well and that is what he got. Damn that is so good: A bed of chips (fries for our American friends) are surrounded by one of the best coleslaw I had in a long time (almost as good as Guy Fieri's if not even better) then slightly pan seared onions and peppers layer on top of the fries. Ready to be mixed in. Then of course a generous amount of chicken or in this case plant based chicken smothered in a sweet chili sauce. Not to forgot to mention that it came with an extra little bowl of dipping sauce. Delicious! We also had a mocktail which name I might not be allowed to recite here let's named it "virgin adult film star" what a perfect combination of fruit, creme and sweetness. Yummmmmm To end the night I had coffee and Choclate - any serving of coffee comes with a set of three pralines. What a way to end the night at the alchemist. Great atmosphere perfect service and delicious food and drinks.

I visited Mr Cooper's after my dreadful stay at The Midland Hotel, hoping there would be one thing to at least salvage the stay and make my stay better, hoping the food would at least try and make up for an awful nights sleep on a pillow which gave me a headache. I'm never afraid to admit when I'm wrong, and I was wrong to expect the breakfast to be different to the shambles of a hotel in which Mr Cooper's is located in and run by. I was drawn to the breakfast selection which was so small, which for £20 was dreadful (although it does go down to £13 if you book in advance with the hotel reception if you're staying there), it mainly consisted of scrambled eggs, baked beans, tomatoes, black pudding and sausages in terms of a cooked side, there was also some fruit juices and cereal, and not a great deal of fruit which also was a shame. Another thing which puzzled me was the fact they produced a menu and even were willing to charge for extra, such as £3 for Eggs Benedict. £20 for a breakfast is already much more expensive than rivals and any restauraunt with decency who actually know this is daylight robbery, for example, the Hilton Manchester Deansgate has a much more broad selection (and better quality), with extras provided in the price for £13.95 (£17.95). Extras which were free included poached and fried eggs, but I can't understand why they weren't provided anyway. I love eggs and this is generally all I eat at a hotel buffet but I'm sad to say, the eggs here were far from pleasant, the scrambled eggs just were bland, they were unseasoned which is inexcusable and they were also watery. It didn't stop there, the poached eggs I requested also were too vinegary, and the fried eggs just tasted really basic and low quality, however, this food which was inedible was probably only what was to come compared to my omelette. I ordered a ham and cheese omelette, not only was this omelette far too cheesy but it had a horrible taste I couldn't pick up on, meaning I had no choice but to spit it out. The only other extra I ordered was gluten-free bread, which wasn't bread as I expected, it was a hard, seeded roll which wasn't very enjoyable either. The selection of fruit juice was okay, however the orange juice was confusing, they had a long title for the orange juice which stated it had pulp, therefore I can't understand why they are advertising it has pulp in the title, when the other one does too, as it doesn't give you a selection? Having two of one beverage is boring and unneeded anyway when they could have a much better selection of juice - they do have the space and equiptment so they don't have an excuse. The staff at the breakfast service seemed nice enough and that is probably the nicest thing I can say about Mr Cooper's, which provides The Midland's hotel breakfast at a very premium price, for items which are so far from premium, you could find them in Poundland if they sold food, and perhaps the chefs should be working there too until they can learn how to make omelettes without an omelette maker and how to season an egg, sadly like The Midland hotel, I strongly feel Mr Cooper's deserves a single one-star rating.

It's a beautiful space, the huge old windows of the Midland are particularly attractive and the indoor garden decor, including little trees and a table with an umbrella, comes across as whimsical and tasteful rather than gimmicky or tacky. Service was very good - very attentive and swift. Food wise, the duck starter my friend had was absolutely outstanding - one of the more delicious things I have had in a while. I also really like my comforting poached egg and smoked salmon dish, especially the extraordinarily delicious filo pastry it was served in. I don't know how something so thin could be so flavourful, although perhaps the answer is butter. I was a bit disappointed by the choice of mains which was either ox cheek or white fish unless you went for what was seemingly the vegetarian option - tortilla parcels (the menu didn't actually explain what was in them) because I felt that it was a choice between two extremes - fish being so light and ox cheek being so rich. In fact, the ox cheek was not overpowering, it was very good. I made the mistake (I guess being used to places where everything is basically served to you in a giant bowl or burger) of eating bits of the fish dish separately at first - but of course the reason a shallot was involved was because eaten together you get a lot more flavour. I shall know for again! I didn't absolutely love the dish, I'm never really a fan of things which come with beans (except refried beans, obviously, bring me all the refried beans), but it was still very decent. Desserts were again of a good standard, they didn't blow me away but I appreciate the involvement of rose water in creme brulee. Some of the desserts on the a la carte menu looked incredible. All in all, a great spot on Manchester's dining scene.

*****BRASSERIE CHEZ GERRARD , ALBERT SQUARE*****…read more We visited Chez Gerrard on Albert Square on Saturday7th August. The three of us were greeted by a pleasant young lady and were shown to our table. We were seated in the front part of the restaurant facing the Town Hall Square. We perused the menu whilst our wine order was taken. The fixed price option was moderately price but didn't particularly like the starters, so we decided to have a mixed platter of ham, cheese, 2 different pates accompained by red onion relish & pickles, from the al a carte. This proved to be a generous portion and we all tucked in and enjoyed this with french bread & butter. The main course we chose were salmon omelette for my wife & the chicken pane with french fries for my son and myself. To finish my wife had the selection of ice creams and my son and myself had the Belgian waffle with chocolate sauce and Vanilla ice cream. The whole occasion was relaxed and the food was delicious. The added attraction was the constant flow of wedding parties using the Town Hall steps for photograph! In all, an excellent meal, moderately priced, served by pleasant, attentive yet inobtusive waiting staff. Would recommend without hesitation.
