Wow. Amongst the things I didn't even know that I was pining away for, add an 8-story+ department store that is everything to everyone. We entered in a very high-end part of the store featuring all the luxury brands one knows then descended to a food court and movie theaters. From there, I moved on to explore the amazing lower-level supermarket before leaving there and strolling into the beauty/pharmacy department filled with products that both are and aren't available in the US. I took the escalator up, eyeballing what each floor held before disembarking at a floor featuring home furnishings, electronics, housewares, and Christmas decor then got together with my friends for a drink at a wine bar on the top floor. Someone else could write a book on all I likely missed here but what I saw guaranteed that from here on I'll be searching for El Corte Inglése in every place I travel. If you think it's odd to have a department store on your must-see list in Lisbon it's clear that you've not yet been to El Corte Inglés.

Jamie W and I have been to the smaller Time Out Markets in NYC (Union Square and DUMBO), but we could never find our footing in these places. This one has the distinction of being the original Time Out Market, so it's had over a dozen years since its opening in 2014 to develop its cred with dilettante foodies and insufferable vloggers. At the same time, the rigid conformity of the food vendors to the Time Out brand makes this place feel far removed from the family-run businesses where you can get a more authentic ambiance and for the most part, cheaper prices. Paying the equivalent of $8 for an overdecorated donut may produce momentary Instagram gratification but little else (Photo 8). That's not to say the layout here isn't well organized, but basically you're relegated to long communal tables where your movements are restricted. Being elbows-to-elbow with famished, arm-waving tourists is not ideal. We were even here during off-peak hours, so I'm presuming it becomes more chaotic and cacophonous during lunch and dinner rushes, especially with the reverberations created from the high ceilings (Photo 9). With dozens upon dozens of food choices, this place is ideal for large groups who have no interest in exploring their own dining options, the ones who are perfectly satisfied with hanging out in food courts in shopping malls. Were it not for luggage restrictions, I would have definitely done a lot more damage here. While the store itself is not super large, it's easy to spend hours browsing as there are a multitude of items ranging from decorative centerpieces, ornamental trinkets to practical tableware as well as intricate Portuguese tiles. I was just in Japan marveling over all the ceramics that I wished I could bring home, but I have to say the Portuguese ceramic game is on a whole another level... the pieces are unique (no two pieces are identical), well-made and best of all, very economically priced. I ended up purchasing multiple pieces of tableware (plates and bowls) while my partner bought a large ornamental ceramic cat as a gift -- all for around 70 euros! Make sure to ask them for bubble wrap (priced at 1€ per square meter-- the ladies at the counter will tell you how much you need) to protect your pieces for the journey home. A must visit during your trip to Lisbon to stock up on the most unique of gifts and home tableware, but if you plan on visiting I would recommend bringing along an extra suitcase! :^)
