O'neal's Country Buffet - Fish fry at the buffet on a Saturday night.

So I had to check it out. There are three separate seating areas. Plenty of tables and booths. It's like a lot of other buffets: you seat yourself and serve yourself everything except your drink. You pay at the register when you leave ($15). You can get food to go as well and they will weigh your container. The buffet itself is pretty small but has everything you'd want: grilled chicken, fried chicken, fish, chicken dumplings, mashed potatoes, beans, corn bread, etc. There is a separate salad buffet and dessert buffet. Service was friendly and efficient. Paying was quick and easy. Bathrooms were clean. And did I mention the fried chicken was perfect and the cobbler outstanding?

The building…read moreis plenty worn around the edges, booths have certainly seen better days, but country humor and hospitality abound. They sell seasonal produce from behind the front counter as well. Everyone is super-nice though you won't normally need much interaction with the waitstaff: you just say what you want to drink, they bring it to you, and you go get your buffet. I don't know if there is also a kitchen menu to order or not, but everyone goes for the buffet--that's clear. The menu changes daily and is written very neatly up on a small chalk board in the front however it's going to be country cookin' at it finest regardless. Saturday night is apparently the fish fry: they had a variety of fried seafood plus a shrimp scampi and fried chicken--also ribs I believe. They apparently always have fried chicken and it's very good fried chicken, too--not the very best I've ever had, but quite good. Of what they had on Saturday night that was good--beyond the fried chicken--I'm a fan of the mac'n'cheese (very good), butter beans, fried mullet (local I would bet, tasted very fresh), coleslaw, and hush puppies. The fried shrimp and shrimp scampi on the other hand seemed to be from frozen and not very good, overcooked. Crayfish were ok. Sweet potato casserole was bland--I've had much better. They fixed four or five cobblers and those I tried were pretty good--apple, peach, and a bread pudding-like one with blueberries. It's not quite five-star but it's an experience at a good price and overall good food. I'd be curious to try the lunch buffet--I kind of felt they were just trying too hard at the Saturday dinner and had a bit too much out to have quality the highest across the board. Still for $17 including your drink you cannot beat an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring very good fried chicken and the other fixin's plus fried mullet--I mean, forget all the other main dishes, that's plenty and a deal at that price. Certainly worth checking out if in Madison.

Adams Street is a quiet street on this particular Saturday morning around 9:15 am. But inside the restaurant, there is a flurry of activity behind the counter, the aroma of breakfast makes us smile when we enter and there is a line that stretches to the door. Folks are waiting. Few dine in and most are carrying out several to go boxes per person. The prices are reasonable and for the portion size, I would say budget-minded. Get the Olean's omelette. It's generously sized and enough for 3 meals. It looks nothing like a traditional omelette. It reads more like a breakfast casserole. Eggs, potatoes, sausage, veggies and cheese. It's comfort food on a plate. I am so sorry I didn't take a photo to share. I highly recommend this meal option! My dining companion ordered scrambled eggs, bacon and plain grits. My dining companion stated they were the best restaurant grits they'd ever eaten. The bacon was piled high on his plate! He took 1/2 this meal home. Mrs. Olean is behind the counter and just as personable as can be. She sets the tone for hospitality and it shows with her courteous staff. There was ample parking. The dining room is small, probably 10 tables in all. Most seem to be taking bags with their to go containers. Few people leave with one container. We will certainly return for some of their lunch options next.

As with Suwanee Hall and "The Den", along with perhaps others I'm unfamiliar with, The Fresh Food Company is run by Aramark. This is largely intended for meal plan students as well as faculty and staff although it is enjoyed by anyone having business on campus. Cafeteria style service in a large central island features self-serve, served as well as made-to-order fare. Remarkable is the generally upbeat demeanor of the kitchen staff. Each time I visit, be it Suwanee or here, I'm engaged in conversation by someone on the other side of the line. Notable breakfast highlight - the omelette station. For the finickiest eaters AND those with the greatest range, there is something here for you. My FSU on-campus dining experience in the late '80s was "SAGA" and this is vastly superior.

For my meal, I started at the diner station, where I received a generous cut of meatloaf, sliced fresh right in front of me. It also came with a serving of golden buttery corn, and a mixture of broccoli and carrots. The meatloaf came with a gravy drizzled over the top, and on the first bite, flavor exploded into my mouth. With the gravy, a few of the bites were right on the verge of being too salty, but managed to not cross that threshold, making it a well seasoned entree with a variety of flavors, from the ketchup crust, to the meat itself, which was tender a delicious, to the gravy on top. Fresh Food Co. has a tendency to not salt their vegetables, likely for health reasons, so a little bit of salt was needed on the broccoli and carrots, but they were well cooked and tasty otherwise. The corn was perfectly buttered, which gave it all the flavor it needed. In total, it was a delightful meal which I would be happy to enjoy again. I would rate it 8/10, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to eat that offers a large range of options. Shout out to 2135!

We were seated promptly on both visits, and the wait staff are very pleasant and helpful. I'm a big fan of most types of Asian food, but I didn't find anything here that was outstanding. Some of the dishes were very cold, as if they had been made in advance, refrigerated, and then reheated for the serving line. I can understand why they would do this, given the huge number of dishes on offer. Still, $42 for 2 people (including soft drink and a tip) seems a bit much for what you get.

However, with restaurant prices rising the way they have been, I'm not mad at Chow Time at all. I appreciated during the first months of re-opening after COVID, gloves and masks were provided (and strictly encouraged). From hibachi to sushi to seafood to hot food to dessert, I don't think you could leave Chow Time hungry. And you're also not going to break the bank and feel like you're not eating your money's worth like you would at a more "luxurious" buffet. While prices have risen over time, I do think it's still remained affordable in a time where eating out has been outrageously overpriced. Definitely great for big groups and picky eaters - Chow Time! Nothing fancy, nothing mind blowing but definitely hits the spot.
