Growing up, my best friend was Filipino. Eating at Malou's is reminiscent of sleep overs, parties and play dates filled with delicious, fragrant and perfectly seasoned food prepared with love and care. Her Mom would say that Filipino food is always made with love and is a way of showing the people you love how much you care. Never rushed, no shortcuts, she would remind me that excellence requires patience and time. This is all true of Malou's where it's obvious that the owner Malou herself holds to these time honored traditions of cooking from scratch with care and love. The staff and owners make you feel like family, so a visit to Malou's is like a trip home. Their food, as they themselves say, truly is like a "warm hug on a plate". I'm so glad we found this place! Filipino food in Alabama? I initially had reservations...but this place did not disappoint! This cozy little gem is located in a strip mall off of Madison Blvd right off the highway, so it's nice and easy to get to. Adequate seating inside. Order and pay at the counter and they will call your name when your food is ready and will so graciously bring it to your table. Good came out quick and hot! We ordered the sizzling Sisig with egg, an extra side of lumpia Shanghai and extra rice. They give generous portions; my husband and I shared the dish. Their Sisig was on point...crispy and tender at the same time. Seasoned right and they poured a creamy sauce on top...the sauce was akin to the hibachi yum yum sauce...but Filipino style. The lumpia Shanghai was crunchy and the meat inside was seasoned well. At each table, they have bottles of sweet chili sauce , vinegar sauce, etc. If I lived here, I definitely become a regular. I was on the west side of the county and decided to try Malou's Kusina. I have a friend who makes excellent pancit, chicken adobo and lumpia. It was 1:57 pm when I placed my to go order. Pancit Party with a side of 2 Shanghai lumpia, pork and vegetable lumpia. The noodles were on the soft side but edible. The flavor was ok and not overly salty. The 2 lumpia were flat and overcooked in my opinion. The filling inside was not sufficient to taste the ingredients. I tasted cooked lumpia wrapper. 3/5 Palabok Baby was ok. I had pancit noodles under a sweet sauce with 3 shrimp, a little ground pork, a sliced hard boiled egg, and I think pork skin crisped up and spread on top. Neither one of us cared for the sauce. We were surprised the pancit noodles tasted different than the order of Pancit Party. If they were the exact noodles, then the sauce from Palabok Baby significantly changed the taste of the pancit noodles. The side of 2 lumpia were under filled and flat. All we could taste was lumpia wrapper. 3/5 The Adobo Affair was ok. The order had 2 leg quarters, pancit bihon, and 2 under filled flat lumpia. I failed to take a picture of this dish. The pancit taste was good. The chicken was very dark and seemed rubbery. Maybe it sat in sauce too long? 3/5 This restaurant has potential. The lumpia need to be filled enough to roll up and be cylindrical. In my opinion they were overcooked. The pancit noodles were on the soft side. I don't know if they are supposed to be soft. Asian noodles tend to be on the chewy side versus soft or mushy. This is a new restaurant and I suspect once the startup and growing pains settle, they will execute better. 3/5 read more

My honest take on Malou's... My best friend had the Sizzle Pig (Sisig) w/egg along with the Shanghai Lumpia and Pancit. I myself had the Dinuguan Dare with white rice and the veggie lumpia. *both of us asked for a little extra spicy since we can tolerate a lot more heat than most* Now the one thing that we noticed upon walking in was that there were quite a few native families in there eating. To me that's a good sign. When you go to a truly ethnic restaurant and you see that, it's a testament to the authenticity. After we got our plates, we both sampled each other's dishes and we both immediately said to each other "we're definitely coming back here to try everything else..." The sisig was perfectly cooked and the chicken in the pancit was tender and flavorful. Noodles were perfect. The dinaguan was savory and rich, the gravy alone was good enough if I had some by itself I would pour it on rice or noodles and eat it. The meat was tender and the spices were present in every single bite... The lumpia... OMG the lumpia... Crispy, perfect amount of veg and fillings. I could make myself fat just snacking on those all day. As far as the heat goes, we asked for a little extra spice and it was there, but wasn't just "hot to be hateful" like some places think of heat. It was more of a savory burn that just makes your face feel warm and you do break a sweat. Could definitely go a bit more on the spicy levels next time because it was that damned good... Talking with the owner and one of the young ladies that worked there (Ainsley I think) about our experiences with foods from different areas. Also mentioning how we had Filipino food in ATL before and never really had somewhere here to enjoy it. Needless to say, this place is a more than welcome welcome addition to the city. First time and my only comparison to your food is the fact that my wife is a Filipina and we lived in Cavite for nearly 15 years before moving to Florida. Your Caldareta is the closest to authentic & delicious I have had outside of our home. Healthy serving and reasonably priced. Still in a Soft Opening mode, but I suggest you have staff at the front counter, who knows something about Filipino food and how it's portioned and what is included in each menu item. We were so exciting have a new and different restaurant in Madison. After trying the food, the excitement was soon disappointment. This was not the first time having Filipino food. I'm not sure after reading so many good reviews, if we just hit it on a bad night. First, reading descriptions left me with more questions than knowing what might be in the dish. You have to go to the actual order section to find out what is in some of the dishes and even then I was still not sure on some of them. Never found out what is in the firecracker lumpia. I wanted something with some vegetables so I ordered the Pancit Party. We called the order in and brought it home. First off my food was just over room temperature while my husband's was hot. So they did not time the food together. The chicken was dry and had no seasoning. The vegetables were minimal at best and the spring onions were raw. The description says the dish is flavored with garlic, soy and oyster sauces. Well it had NO FLAVOR at all. After 3 bites I just threw it away. I wanted vegetables so got the vegetable lumpia. They were good and I would have them again. My husband ordered the Caldereta Craze pork. It also had very limited vegetables in it. This dish is pictured with a red pepper beside the title it was not spicy at all. This is good if you don't like spicy food. It was better than my dish, but not really something we would eat again. The portions were very generous, so you could easily share or save some for leftovers. read more

I was excited to discover a Filipino restaurant in Huntsville, so I had to give it a try. I placed my order through their website, which was very easy and convenient. My food was ready at the designated time, and I even received a text notification letting me know it was ready. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill once I arrived. I was there around 2:00 p.m. on August 13, and I wasn't greeted at all. Usually, Filipino restaurants are known for friendly, welcoming customer service, but that definitely wasn't my experience today. The young ladies at the counter simply looked at me as if I didn't know what I was doing. I said I had a phone order, and one of them rather unenthusiastically responded, "Name?" I gave her my name, she handed me the food, and that was essentially the entire interaction. Very disappointing. As for the food, I ordered chicken adobo with rice and two lumpia, as well as lechon kawali with four lumpia. Unfortunately, the lumpia were burnt. One side was dark brown while the other was nearly black. One of them was even bursting open on one side, presumably from being fried at too high a temperature. They looked nothing like the picture on the restaurant's website, where the lumpia were a nice light golden brown and intact. That's especially unfortunate because the portions that were edible were actually quite good. I could tell the lumpia filling had the potential to be really delicious. The lumpia were also huge--one piece was easily the equivalent of two or three pieces at some other Filipino restaurants I've visited. The chicken adobo had the right flavors and could have been really good, but the chicken itself tasted and felt like it had been cooked more than a day or two ago and had spent quite a bit of time simmering or being reheated. I say that because I've eaten leftover chicken adobo at home many times, and when the dark meat that is normally tender becomes unusually firm and darker in color, that's usually a sign that it's past its prime. The winner, without a doubt, was the lechon kawali! It was fresh, crispy, and crunchy--the way I love it. That was definitely the highlight of my meal. Overall, it was a mixed experience. The food showed some real potential, especially the lumpia filling and the lechon kawali, but the customer service and quality of some of the other items were disappointing. If I'm ever in Huntsville again, I may give them another try. I like to give Filipino restaurants a second chance--unless the food gives me a stomachache! read more

Having lived overseas with authentic Filipino food available, this place gets a meh rating. The beef was tough, pork was grisly and inedible. The pancit was so so and bland. Unfortunate, since we were excited for a new cuisine to be available. The restaurant is nice up front but ratty in the back. The only thing I could recommend is the lumpia. read more
