My go to for date night or with family. This place always has good food & the ambiance is always cozy. The staff is friendly & the beers are the reason we started coming here in the first place. Maloney's is only 2 miles from my home so I come here often. The sludge cake & goat cheese flat bread are two of my favorites, following the blu cheese muscles & pear cider (of course). The draught menu presents "what's on tap" broken down by types of beer; Belgians, Stouts & Porters, Ciders & Meads, Sessions, IPA's & Pale Ale's, Sours, Fruit & Wheat and seasonals. Maloney's serves pub food...burgers, fries, salads, seafood, sandwiches. Looking for a healthier option, I ordered a quinoa & black bean burger. The burger was good. It came atop a brioche bun with a leaf of romaine, slice of red onion, a slice of tomato and aioli on the side. The burger was crisp, grilled and not greasy. My guest ordered the Buffalo Flatbread and said it was good. Pieces of buffalo chicken adorned the the thick flatbread with cheese nestled between the two. This was my first experience with the establishment and would definitely come back. The server knew the menu and knew his beers. The food portions are generous, good quality and made with care. The draught prices are a little higher but given the large selection of brews "on tap", maintenance of the tap lines, time spent selecting and acquiring..it's worth it. The food is usually good but every time I come here I ask for a cocktail/drink menu and they never have one, they tell me they have all the liquor at the bar. I would hope so you are a pub after all. What bothered me the most is that this bar airs sports all the time. Knowing the game I wanted to watch was on prime video I called ahead to see if they were airing it, the host said they were. I asked her again, stating it was on Amazon prime, she assured me they had it on. I get to the restaurant sit down and they tell me they don't have Amazon prime. How hard was it for the host to ask before wasting my time and night. On top of it, it took 20 min to get the check after boxes came already...on a Wednesday when the place is dead. We met with a fairly large group of friends here the other night for drinks and food. Maloney's is located in downtown Matawan, which I had actually never visited before. Maloney's has a large beer selection, which initially made me happy. I came first and sat at the bar. I was handed the beer list and immediately noticed that the prices were about $2-3 too expensive for each beer. While I can understand that if it would be located in an expensive place, such as Manhattan or even Downtown Princeton, but the Main Street of Matawan has a somewhat gritty, down-home feel. So, a large beer selection is not exciting for me if I am limited to the number of beers that I may order before racking up a large bill. Since I was having a lot of fun with my friends, I "splurged" and ordered a second glass of German Smoked Beer for a whopping $9. Turns out, it came in a wine glass, which maybe had 5 oz in it. I felt cheated. It should have cost $3. When I feel cheated by a restaurant, I lower my rating by one star. Furthermore, the decor is very much dated 90's. The bar stool I sat on was rickety, and I had to find another one. It was also worn. The bar surface has holes in it and needs to be replaced. The table we sat at was also very rickety, and it took a lot of work to get it somewhat more stabile. Why are they so expensive?? Some of the crowd at the bar were very uncouth. Admittedly, I enjoy dive bars, but they also should come with lower prices. The food items were priced well, however. My chicken sandwich was pretty good, but it came out fried. When I tasted it, I could tell that they had not replaced the oil in a while. The service was very good from the waiter. They also let us reserve tables in advance. He was able to explain all the beers in better detail than I could have expected. Maybe he could have also warned me that the already expensive beer was going to be served only in a 5 oz wine glass. My friends seemed to like this place, however. It was a blast hanging out with them, and I don't want them to get the impression that I didn't enjoy myself, which I did. But I would not go back to Maloney's again, and I cannot recommend to go here. read more

I am not a beer drinker but like wine. My family and I have been going here for years. It was one of our favorite places but not now. The wine glass is 2 fingers full when it used to be a good 6 oz or more and the price now is $14 for a small glass of house wine to boot (we are not in NYC ) It used to be $8!! What happened?? We ate dinner here tonight with a friend and had a great experience. It was my first time, the selections were pretty decent. It was nice to see a big selection of ciders and beers. Most places only have beers. We started with mussels that were great and the Asian styled wings - also great. The wasabi dipping sauce was a great addition. We had the Maloney burger which was cooked to perfection and a black and bleu salad that was pretty good. We also had a great server, who, admittedly, was new, but was excellent. Got there about 4pm on Sunday night. We were seated promptly on a high table in the bar area (our choice). The place has over 100 beers on tap! The wife and I both ordered beer. Both were very good. We ordered Portuguese shrimp which were served in a carved out loaf of bread. The sauce was light brown with just a hint of spice and plenty of garlic. This dish is fantastic! We also ordered "meat lovers flat bread. A nice crust and a very enjoyable item. There were 4 or 5 TVs showing the football game. Tables were spaced nicely. I discovered this spot for my son and daughter-in-law and it has become their hands down favorite place to go. It's also becoming ours. If you are beer lover or beer connoisseur you will be in beer heaven here. There are over 125 taps, they offer IPAs, meads, stouts, ciders, Belgian ales & German lagers. The best local brewers are all here too. But it's not just the beer that's great, the food is as well. The menu features some pub classics as well as some amazing specials that vary constantly. On this visit we started with the Bleu Cheese Mussels, prince Edward isle's in white wine with herbs, shallots, garlic, smokey bacon and creamy bleu cheese. Not only is the presentation of this dish amazing but so is the bleu cheese sauce. Such a unique flavor that just went perfectly with the mussels. For our mains my wife went with the Goat Cheese Flatbread, arugula, grape tomatoes, kalamata olives and a lemon vinaigrette, so delicious. I went with the Grilled Patty Melt, American cheese, caramelized onions on toasted rye bread. Well the meat was grilled perfectly, so tender, juicy and delicious. I need to get this again as soon as possible. We of course had some beers with my wife opting for the Allagash White and myself with one of my favorites, the Kwak, a full bodied amber Belgian ale, two great choices. This really is a great place. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is great and if your worried about dining in during these times, it is absolutely so clean and immaculate and all safety precautions are being followed. Stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon for some lunch and a beer - and we will definitely be back! Great atmosphere, even better food and the beer selection is top notch. I tried two different ciders - McKenzie Peach & Snowdrift Red Cider - the McKenzie Peach was like drinking a peach Snapple, which is dangerous! And the Snowdrift Red Cider was a rosé cider so a bit sweet but very good flavor! For food we had the Turkey Reuben and a house salad with grilled chicken (boring Diet food ). The Reuben was out of this world but the steak fries were even better! For a salad, it was tasty but I wish I tried something else. Can't wait to come back and try something else! I may have found a new favorite, go-to restaurant. Maloneys has it all - atmosphere, great food, great service, and BEST BEERS SELECTION in NJ !! I was there and my meal have been really good. I've been frequenting Maloney's since it opened and it has a can't be beat draft/craft beer selection. They serve high end pub food and I've never had a bad experience with either the food or the excellent staff. I'm not sure why I never reviewed them before, but now that dining out literally means we need to sit outside and social distance because of COVID-19, I wanted to make sure people know what a beautiful job Maloney's has done to accommodate it's customers. They have some tables in the front by the street, but in the back they have both a patio and a tent with plenty of room to space out guests. Even though we were outside, the tables and chairs were of good quality and didn't feel wobbly. The staff was attentive and masked and the food maintained the same quality as it had pre-COVID. Their beer list doesn't seem paired down either, which is a huge plus. read more

I live nearby Maloney's and I was recommended this place by my coworker. Let's first tackle the positives. Maloney's has a neighborhoody feel to it. It is clean, not pretentious. They have an expansive beer menu, which is shocking to me. There are everything from sour beers to NJ craft beers. Lastly, the prices are fair, most meals are around $13. Why I rated it 2 stars has to do with the service and the quality of the food. Our waitress was so absent minded. It easily took her 20-30 min to bring my beer to me. Furthermore our food was salty. It seemed as if it was made in the Dead Sea. I had a huge layer of salt caked on my burger, the Maloney burger. My partner had salt all over her clams. Her clams were chewy, as well, either overcooked or not fresh. I'm always concerned with a place that has otherwise standard fare, can't do it right. Its upsetting because I was looking forward to a good go-to place but I guess Maloney's isn't it for me. read more

I've eaten here before but didn't review it, I wasn't really a Yelp person then. I'm glad I waited. Anyway, we were supposed to go to Dublin House in Red Bank but they informed us there wouldn't be a table ready until 830pm. So we decided to try Maloney's because my daughter and her husband didn't want Mexican food. I was doubtful about outdoor seating availability, but my wife says they were able to put together some outdoor seating. We found a parking spot right out front on Main Street. First I notice they have a couple of tables on the sidewalk, not much there. Then I do a double take, there's a huge lot next to the building with those large rental style tent canopies with a bunch of wicker/resin style tables and chairs with cushions. Very cozy, no wobbly tables like Mj's. The hostess was inside as directed by a sign, a table was ready immediately. She led us through the restaurant to a patio that was also being utilized for dining and onto what appeared to be new sod. Mark, our server was excellent and accommodating as was his busboy Royce. The restaurant even set up a table for a family where one wasn't available. We were so pleased with our dining experience that we asked to speak to a manager. The owner, Megan, came out with some apprehension but was then happy to hear that we asked for her to compliment her on such a great dining experience. My son in-law is a huge IPA fan, so he was pleased at the numerous selections on tap. My daughter likes beer too, I think she had a Belgian wheat. For appetizers we had the Black and Tan onion rings with ranch dipping sauce, and the spinach and artichoke dip, with little triangles of pita. Both were excellent. For entrees my son in-law had the Maloney burger, it has bacon and Swiss served on an English muffin. He said it was excellent. My daughter who's picky and rarely compliments food, thoroughly enjoyed the Tuna BLT, sans bacon because she doesn't eat pork. The medium rare tuna steak on brioche bun with wasabi mayo is a game changer, she forced herself to finish it because it was so good even though she was full. My wife had the Blackened Ahi tuna salad, she loved it but it was huge and she brought half home. I usually do not like breaded chicken but the Crispy Chipotle Chicken sandwich sounded delicious, and it was. The chicken was cooked to perfection tender and juicy under the light breading. The toppings of cheddar jack cheese, avocado, pickle, lettuce, tomato, and red onion, with the chipotle ranch dressing also excellent. All on a sturdy brioche bun. Every bite was perfect. I think anything would taste good on those buns though. Sorry I keep forgetting to take photos of the food, I hope my descriptions conveyed what I was trying to get across.
