[NB "Strip" as in NY Strip/sirloin; not the other kind!]
I have a new regular steak joint.
First off the venue/decor: a subtle hat tip to modern NY brasseries. Exposed brickwork, somber ambient lighting, dark leather and wooden booths. The standard array of spirits and wines.
Now the most important stuff - the food. The steak appropriately lives up to the NY decor. It is (one of) the only steaks I've had in london (including goodman, of which I'm a fan Hawksmoor so so, Mash very nice) that has a nice crispy char on the first bite and beautiful buttery USDA beef on the second. The reason for the parentheses above is that I've heard Wolfgang puck's restaurant The Cut has a similar taste experience BUT at a wholly incomparable price... I'm yet to try it.
The sides - truffle mash, steamed spinach, green beans with feta and dijonaise all amazing. As much as I like creamed spinach the UK versions tend to be a tad lacklustre. For those watching their waistline plain, healthy steamed spinach is a welcome option. Oh and the home made steak sauce and cheddar infused Yorkshire puddings (in lieu of a bread basket) are surprisingly nice.
The staff are lovely, warm and welcoming, which can make all the difference, and the service overall is very attentive without being intrusive.
Lastly and perhaps most importantly, the price. At a better than pro rata £20 for 250g of steak, it's one of the better priced option available in London. read more
