This was a handy spot for an overnight stay in Manchester. It's super close to Piccadilly and check in was straightforward. My room was a standard room, the bed was huge and generally the room was nicely decorated. It did seem a little tired though and slightly worn in parts - the desk had a weird stickiness to it on the edge which was a bit off putting. The bathroom though was spotless and the bath totally sparkled. I ordered room service which was easy and arrived within about 20 minutes. The food was excellent which was good to see as I've had the Mal Burger in Glasgow and this one was just as good. It has relish with it that is crazy delicious, it tastes a little like McDonalds sauce but in a good way, if that's possible. They get an extra star just for that. Overnight the bed was comfy, good amount of pillows and a warm doona (duvet). Downside was that there seemed to be quite a lot of doors opening/closing in the hall which I found disruptive even though I normally sleep through everything. Breakfast was good but I only had time to sample the continental. I'm not sure I'd book to stay here again when I return to Manchester as it didn't have much to it to entice me back but it was pleasant enough for my overnight stay. read more

It's hard to think of a better hotel to stay at while visiting Manchester. The Malmaison is part of a 13 strong chain that has hotels sited in large UK cities. The Manchester branch is situated about three minutes from the Piccadilly Station and very convenient to all major transportation in the area. The hotel's bones come from a 1851 era building that served as a factory and warehouse. They've added on a modern wing to the building, and other than the lovely street facade you'll be hard pressed to find original details. None the less, the interior does not disappoint, with heavy usage of strong grey, black, and purple colors in the rooms and hallways. It's a thoroughly modern palette that feels posh, not stripped down. Brittany A. and I checked in after arriving on a busy Sunday afternoon. The proximity to Piccadilly Station makes it an attractive location, especially since we were lugging an extra large suitcase and dog in tow. Check in was fast, however they are sticklers for a 3PM check in time. We showed up at 2:50PM and had to wait ten minutes for our room to be ready. No worries though, the staff took our luggage for room delivery while we enjoyed coffee from the attached Starbucks. The hotel is dog friendly, although they don't go out of their way to advertise the fact. We paid £10 extra for our one night, and a large dog bed and bowl was awaiting our pooch in the room. Our digs were a large corner room on the fourth floor (there are five total). It featured a large king sized bed, desk and chair, two large lounge chairs, a 40 inch LED television, large closet with a refrigerator, and a bathroom with both tub and a walk-in shower with rain-shower head. The bed is a major highlight. The mattress is a Sealy, firm but comfortable, and the linens and duvet felt brand new. I could have used a couple of extra pillows though. I had one of the best nights sleep in awhile on the bed, and I could see myself coming back just for that reason. A minor complaint of the room is the lighting. Coupled with the setback of the sink, it was quite difficult to shave properly in the morning. Check out is generously at noon, giving you enough time to pop downstairs for breakfast and get ready at a nice pace. Our room package (a steal at £105) included two glasses of prosecco from the lobby bar and continental breakfast. The muesli with fresh fruit and granola is a real standout at breakfast. The coffee is weak for my tastes, but at least the Starbucks is a few steps away. I haven't felt this pampered since staying at the Mondrian in London, and at such a bargain, you'll have more pounds to enjoy in Manchester. Overall I can't recommend the Malmaison Manchester enough. It has character and charm (check out the canal running underneath), and a high level of service that will make you feel well treated. read more

Good ol' Mal. How many times have disrespected your porcelain bowls after a night on the sauce? How many times have you nestled me in your dramatically decorated bosom, safe from all those people who's doors we have just knocked on at three in the morning? And how many times have you come up trumps when I knowingly booked you under the Secret Hotel Deals (on a website that must remain nameless) in a shameful act of penny pinching? Lots, and that's why I love you. Sure your lobby is a little too similar to the haunted dining table scene in Michael Keaton's greatest achievement Beetlejuice. Sure your gym was so small that it actually runs the risk of making people UNfit due to not being able to actually move. But hotels are all about getting taking a break from the norm. They SHOULD be unusual, they SHOULD be dramatic or else...why even bother? read more

I stayed in a 'Cosy Double' room over the weekend, and yes, although I only live down the road, sometimes when life gets a bit too much and you need a little bit of luxury to escape to, Malmaison is the perfect hotel. It may have cost more than double my weekly rent, but hell it was worth it. I've stayed in both the 'Spacious' and 'Cosy' rooms before and I'd opt for the 'Cosy' again as they are both the same price, yet the cosy has dark and intimate furnishings and is less business like. Last weekend I paid £95 for a late booking, but I have seen them for £75 a night if you book in advance, whilst on the night the price can go up to £105. the rooms are modern, have a nice hard mattresses and great showers. The toiletries are the same brand as they use downstairs in the spa, so they are pretty good too. One warning though, the price for a night gets you just that, one night's stay, no breakfast, no coffee tray and not even a hair dryer so don't expect any extras! I always find the service in the foyer friendly and efficient and they are quite happy for you to lounge around whilst you wait for friends in the sumptuous velvet couches. It's proximity to the city centre and Piccadilly station can't be beaten either as Malmaison is literally on the doorstep of both. The best thing about here though is the decor; modern, dark and sleek, so if that's your thing you wont be disappointed here. Just a tip: The Brasserie de Malmaison has a great offer running at the moment called 'The Three Tenners' where you can get 2 courses for £10, which is a pretty cool deal for such a swanky hotel. read more

The name 'Malmaison' is derived from the French for 'whore house' and the original Malmaison hotel is believed to be in a building that actually was a brothel. Good starting point! Renowned for luxury and good food, we weren't disappointed. As a hotel, there's a very distinct sense of style. It's very velvety, with dark lighting ensuring a quite romantic feel - if you want it to be, equally it's fine for a one night business trip. Plush furnishings giving a sense of indulgence without being tacky. The staff are all very friendly and very eager to help. It's proximity to Picadilly train station is a huge bonus and it's close enough to town without being directly in the centre. The Brasserie in the hotel is set with mood lighting, a little to the point where you can't see the menu well (so bring glasses for the visually impaired). They serve until quite late and there's a feel that everyone can be there - business or pleasure. The service is incredibly quick and the good is bistro with a French twist - it's simple and never stops being delicious. The fish in particular is very good, I would recommend the Salmon en Croute. Perhaps the atmosphere is a bit on the quiet side, quite low key and you therefore probably wouldn't take a group of kids in there in the evening. Booked a room here for a weekend getaway. They go a little over the top with the dark, velvety black and crimson theme. But when it comes to what I like in a hotel - a great bed, fantastic shower, nice amenities, it more than delivered. They also have a pretty good brasserie and bar downstairs, although a little overpriced when you can find something similar just blocks away and not attached to a hotel. Another bonus is that it's close walking distance from the Piccadilly train station, and all the main attractions in the city center. read more

This was the second time I stayed at Manchester Mal; the first was over two year ago now. Malmaison is styled like a boutique chain with plush velvet curtains, chaise lounges and thick patterned wall paper. The decor is lush and inviting although I do find the framed photos of naked torsos or corseted figures a bit odd (I've heard each Mal is styled after whatever the building used to be so does that mean this used to be a brothel?). I was in town for business and we had drinks and dinner booked for clients and I can not fault the food one bit. Steak for 40 people is never an easy feat and mine came out perfectly medium-rare and delicious. Our private cocktail area was exactly that with an added cozy corner with plush booths hidden behind another velvet curtain. I was slightly disappointed that my frozen strawberry daquiri was in fact not frozen at all but just served over crushed ice--not exactly frozen. Minor complaint but I do like my cocktails. The amenities in the room are top notch with free wifi, large flat screen tv, desk, deluxe size Molton Brown toiletries---hot water and water pressure are not an issue at all and also the hair-dryer was high powered. I know that may seem silly but if you have long hair there is nothing worse then a hair dryer that barely blows! I will say I was disappointed that the bathroom smelled like a bathroom. From the moment I walked in it smelled slightly sewer-y and the smell did not dissipate through my stay. As I was in town on business I didn't have time to enquire or complain. You couldn't smell it in the main room or I would have brought it to management attention. Overall the value for money--especially when you factor in food--is amazing. The Malmaison has always been one of my favourite hotels. Before I move to Manchester I regularly stayed in the Liverpool Malmaison and was never disappointed the quality of the rooms and service we received during our stays. The Manchester Malmaison is no exception. Its signature style is made up of dark, luxurious interiors with oversized beds and slate wet rooms with large whirlpool baths. As you sink into the Egyptian cotton sheets and turn on the plasma television you only wish you did not have to leave the next day. The Malmaison team are happy to top up your tea and coffee and welcome you to take home the full size toiletries in your room. The prices are pretty decent considering, I would much prefer to stay in the Malmaison than some other very expensively priced well known hotels. What's more we asked for a late checkout on two occasions in Manchester and we were never charged a penny. This place is definitely a place to relax and unwind when you're away from home. read more

Lovely rooms, great front of house service, nice bar. All that you want from a hotel really, though to be honest I don't really remember seeing that much of it as I arrived 'home' late and ran out early the next morning. What I would say is that a) I booked a room with black sheets on the website - they looked opulent and awesome, and the room I got had standard white hotel sheets - if you're going to make your rooms look different on the website, make them different when I arrive, and b) the shower was possibly the best shower I've ever been in in my entire life ever. Located in the lower level of the Malmaison Hotel, Le Petit Spa has just launched a belter of an offer to pamper yourself silly. The new Espa package is a combination of facial, back and neck treatments for 60 minutes at only £55. Yep...£55 AND you get a gift voucher for £30 towards Espa products. So doing the maths, we're looking at £25 for a class A massage treatment. Having had massage and facial treatments at other spas in Manchester, this was my first encounter with Espa products. Expertly applied by the lovely Sarah, it is certainly at the top of my list for best overall spa experiences. The aromatherapy back massage was divine in its own right, and the pesky knots in my shoulders have been kneaded into submission with the perfect amount of pressure applied. But the facial was simply exhilarating...I've never had my skin tingle in this way before (in a good way, not from irritation). There is an extensive line to choose from, and depending on your skin type the best moisturisers, cleaners and exfoliators will be selected. And the fragrance of the Espa products is entrancing, providing more aromatherapy to the overall treatment. This is a must, people. read more

After literally a two minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly train station I arrived at Malmaison hotel. From first impressions very very nice, had a very modern feel to the hotel and the receptionist were very helpful on showing us to the spa, and by God I was ready for it! The spa was very clean and the changing rooms where spotless! The staff were great and I couldn't have asked for anymore. The treatment was a full body massage and sent me into a serious state of relaxation, with sooth calm music setting the tone, I couldn't have asked for a better way to start my weekend, full marks from me! Nice hotel. BUT : The gym is very small and basically - in the lobby (One small step(s) down..The spa is only accessible from one separate elevator down to the lower level and it only has a sauna. So if you workout in the gym & are sweaty afterwards- you have to walk through the lobby to get to the elevator that takes you to your room... very unconventional and not very convenient. About the wifi... It is free, but you have to login using an email address and once you accept the conditions -you log in-- and it works for about only two to three hours and then you have to do the exact same thing every two to three hours. Not what you'd expect when you are a guest for at least 24 hours. If you are using Wi-Fi on your phone you literally have to reselect the Wi-Fi network every time you set your phone down. Disappointed. Also there is a starbucks sharing the real-estate of the hotel. Convenient for coffee, but it also means a crowded entryway. read more

I was here all day for a conference. This is a beautiful and stylish hotel. I spent the day in Mal 4, a training room with a break out area attached. The staff were brilliant all day with providing decent coffee / biscuits / fresh apple juice / sparkling water. At lunch I got a decent veggie selection of sandwiches / chips and salads. Very comfortable conference room and I was able to leave my luggage in a locked room for the day. I wish I had stayed here last night, only didn't as it wasn't on my works list of partnered hotels. Rooms need serious attention here, all scuffed and generally give a feeling of run down. Check in pretty sterile Bar is a joke, unless you are part of the hipster scene don't expect to be acknowledged. Hotel located in the city centre! This is a nice up market place, the rooms are lovely (and posh!) and there are plenty of them! the staff are very friendly and helpful which is sometimes hard to come by nowadays. Its located just down from piccadilly trains station and round the corner from piccadilly gardens meaning its really accessable in terms of transport around the city. They have a bistro, restaurant and bar which are open to the general public too. read more

We thought we should have got atleast something with the room like a bottle of wine as it was quite expensive for just one night but we did think the free voucher for a cocktail was a very nice gesture. read more
