Motel One is a large chain of motel / hotels and this location is one of their newest locations, located on Cross Street in Central Manchester, opposite the Royal Exchange Theatre and next to the large Boots store. I called in here to take a quick look around the lobby, to get a overall feel for the motel ahead of a possible upcoming stay while I have some work completed on my house, meaning I'd need to temporarily move out. The man who served me seemed a little robotic, he seemed to lack common sense in a way, which was rather odd. He told me all rooms just had one double bed, which seems rather odd that they don't have twin rooms or anything of the sort. The pricing was a little expensive at £84 per night Monday to Friday and then Sunday, but then it worked out about £129 on a Saturday, and as far as I'm aware this was just for the basic room and no breakfast, the services here seemed a little minimal. The lobby was okay, and it works out at decent value, yet still a tad expensive for a motel/hotel of its kind, hence deserving two star rating, which is mainly earned through the features in the hotel lobby, albeit I still think this rating is a little generous.

I was really impressed with Motel One. It's billed as a three star hotel but I think it's more leaning towards four stars! It's extremely modern with a welcoming reception equipped with comfortable seating, a fully stocked bar and some nice decorative elements including hanging guitars! The rooms are small but perfectly formed - they've employed a range of great space saving elements like a fold down coffee and tea station, a flat screen TV and a usually clunky wardrobe replaced by hanging rails. The bed was comfortable and the shower was great - two things I always look for in a hotel. I was impressed with the staff - on two occasions they exceeded expectations; firstly when it was pouring outside they gave me an umbrella and secondly they brought an iron and board to the room! In terms of location, it's next to Piccadilly Station meaning there's handy transport links to the airport and you can easily walk in to town! The only tiny downside of this is you can hear the trams passing early in the morning - but it's hard to completely eliminate noise in such a central location!

I received an invite to the Motel One Opening Party. Not entirely sure how I got on the list but it's still nice to be invited. The invite was one of the more interesting invites I've received - it was in the shape of one of those "please do not disturb signs" that you get in hotels as well as a rose. A real one! I gave the rose to the friend who I asked to be my +1, though I think her fella was a bit suspicious when she got home...oops! So the night arrived. Whilst I googled the address, we weren't entirely sure where to find it. Basically, if you cut through Piccadilly Place , behind the Doubletree, and turn right onto London Road, and it's a short way down the road. It's not quite as far as Monroes. There's a nice little seating area in the London Road entrance which was nice We were greeted with blue prosecco. I can't remember what they put in the prosecco to make it blue, but it was a nice touch to have a drink in their corporate colour. We made our way to the main bar area, which was really nice considering it's a budget hotel. I've been to 4* hotels where the bar isn't so nice. There were glitterballs - not sure if they are were brought in for the party or if they are always there. The room is really big with a range of seating, some sofas, some tables/chairs. There's also a fire - though it's not a real fire - but a nice cosy touch. The main reception is in the same area as the bar and there's also another entrance in the bar - assume it goes to Whitworth Street or Aytoun Street but I didn't investigate. The canapes were nice - cheese and ham toasties, some goats cheese tarts, prawn things, samosas and other things I can't remember. There were also small versions of their signature cocktails doing the rounds , one with bourbon (which I didn't try) and one called Cottonoppolis which had blue cotton candy and gin and was really nice. I had to try a few of those just to make sure they were nice. We were given a show around the hotel. Being a German brand, it has the efficiency and clean lines that you'd expect. There are bigger rooms, with sofas which can be folded out for kids, and other rooms that are laid out a little differently to create more space. I tried out the beds in each of the rooms we went in. Well not "tried out" like that, before anyone thinks I'm some sort of weirdo, but I mean I sat on the edge and bounced a bit. I did lay back on one of the beds to test it out. Was very comfortable, though not as nice as my memory foam mattress (but then nothing is). Since I live in town I can't imagine I'd ever stay here. It's only £69 for a standard room and £89 for the bigger rooms (though apparently sometimes have premium rates). With 350 rooms, and the second largest hotel in Manchester, you'd most likely always get a room.

Left the room and came back to fresh towels, the room tidied and wee sweets

However. The Upper Brook Street hotel is by far one of the best especially, if like me, you are wanting to find a hotel for Manchester Pride. Every August Bank Holiday hotels all over Manchester charge extortionate amounts to stay in the city. This travelodge however works out at around £100-£120 for two nights. So £60 each (£30 a night) or about £40/£30 if you get a family room for 3/4 people. That's a bargain price for a hotel that is just 10 minutes away or less from Canal St in a taxi. This year we used Uber which was never more than £3-£5 to get to the city. The rooms are a great size and the hotel is only a couple of years old so nice a fresh and they have just updated all the beds to super comfy king size! I loved it. So Pride goers or those looking for a night out in Manchester, I recommend this place if you are looking for somewhere at the weekend when the hotels in the city centre are not in your budget.

Little bit out of city centre and more buses 'not in service' than running. Hotel is near a busy A&E so bring earplugs, luckily my friend snores so I came prepared! Nice to have the extra bed made up, sometimes it isn't even when twin/family room booked. Extra towels on request no problem, slight niggle with bulb being out in corridor, which being in an end room made the key card slot a little difficult to find in the semi-dark! TV channels also not in order and random, no ch5, and only 3 radio chamnels Kevin, on Reception was very friendly and helpful, and there is a Tesco Express, Morrisons, Subway, Costa and takeaways etc closeby

At first I thought we should be going to weatherspoons as its much much cheaper but after being persuaded I never looked back. You have your choice of juice (Apple, orange, cranberry) coffee, tea and 5 or 6 different herbal teas and water. You can either enjoy a delicious plate of hot food with all your standard full English ingredients, all hot, mostly fresh or tuck into a lighter, cold option of fruit, cereal or pastries, however I think the pastries are included in a different, cheaper package. You can go back as many times as you like for more food and there's a toast machine where you make your own toast and enjoy with butter or a selection of different jams and marmalade. The seating area is very bright and very clean. The staff were really friendly and helpful and you didn't get too much attention that it became annoying. The atmosphere was quite loud on my visit but it was a Saturday morning and all the youngsters were looking hungover and regretful. You can walk in here anytime to get a table however it may not be guaranteed as the customers of the hotel would come first I presume. Only issue; I didn't get any mushrooms as they were being prepared in the kitchen as I got my food and by the time they were ready, I was full. But very satisfied. Would definitely recommend breakfast at this hotel, weather your staying here or not. Excellent.

Lunch and breakfast were good and tasty at the in-house restaurant. Hotel staff was great - they were able to get a room ready for us for an early check-in when we arrived from the airport. And when we had to check out early due to a family emergency back in the States, they graciously gave us a refund of the unused days that we booked (I didn't even inquire about this possibility!). This worked well for a quick stay before a flight out of Manchester Airport the next morning. Nice for Hilton Honors members. I got a room upgrade, drink vouchers, complimentary mini bar items, and free breakfast with my account. The warm cookie (for all) at check-in is pleasant as well. There's a restaurant and bar onsite. The breakfast buffet was nice! Full English and continental options. I liked the touch of having small individual pots of Bonne Maman jam as well. Delicious with a croissant and coffee. We didn't have much time to do anything in Manchester, but I was able to squeeze in a little walk in the area - saw Piccadilly Garden, Chinatown, the Alan Turing Memorial in a nice little park and walked through the colorful streets of the Gay Village neighborhood. Lots of dining options near the hotel, and a Tesco for big bottled waters (for us Americans, haha).

Check-in took me less than 5 minutes total. No issues, no hassle and they even comped me a breakfast for the next morning, which is typically £17.50. So that was nice. The room, it was amazing. Big, beautiful and very accommodating. The bed was great, large, comfortable and I fit on it, which seems to be a rarity. In the bathroom was a large jet tub and a large shower. Very well done and classy. The room came with a nice flat screen TV and free view stations. One entire wall of my room was a giant window overlooking Manchester, which was great! Now to the lesser parts of this place. There is a large lounge to the right of check-in. It has many tables, seats, a flat panel TV and a full bar. There always seemed to be two or three people working at the bar, which was rarely super busy. If you went up to the bar for a pint, they would tell you to go sit down and they'll come get your order and bring it to you. I sat down for 10 minutes waiting, eyeballing these guys who were standing around doing nothing. This happened multiple times while I was here. Suck. With my comped breakfast waiting for me, I headed down to the restaurant. I was seated as far in the back as humanly possible, which the rest of the restaurant wasn't very full at all. It was buffet style, with an omelet/egg bar. Took me 15 minutes to get a cheese and ham omelet. Really? Were they raising the chicken and waiting for it to drop the eggs right there? When I finally get my omelet, I head back to my table only to find that they have sat someone else there already. WTF!?!?!1one! The food was good, so that was nice, once I had a table to eat it on. There was also some mysterious shortage of glasses, bowls and plates. You'd think they'd have that figured out. All in all, the hotel is very nice and modern. I enjoyed my stay there and may or may not stay there again when I am back in town.
