Had to stay in a room that hovered around a cosy 30-31 degrees Celsius day and night. The thermostat reading is from 3:30 am. The windows only open a sliver ( i suspect because they don't want anyone jumping when the guests' brains finally liquefy from being stuck in a brick oven and they seek to actually escape the hell in which they now find themselves). On the bright side, the staff are very kind and apologetic -- they should be commended for fielding what I'm sure are a ceaseless barrage of complaints only ending once the guests succumb to heat stroke. So, in summary, stay here if you wish to fulfill a fantasy of knowing what a slow broiled potato must feel like.

That said, that's just the way it goes when reviewing! The hotel, itself, is located in a great, convenient area. It's walkable to Piccadilly Gardens and various shopping like Boots and the ever loved by every American I ever knew, ( not me!), Primark. Great pubs and eateries abound and the arena isn't far, either. Upon arriving you will tote your own luggage up about 6 stairs, as there was no ramp or bell man. The lobby level is modern in a disco sort of way, as is the bar and restaurant below. Andre is great though and me and my colleagues loved him during a recent visit where he explained some of the 'futbol' rules to us during the Fifa World Cup England/Colombia game. Happy Hour is a good one. The gym is modern and nice. My room, hmm.. not so modern. I had a hard time finding plugs! I was unplugging appliances and plugging my two items in! I even moved the tea pot to heat water to the floor since it was there in the most random place and a UK plug. The shower took me forever to figure out how to turn on from running water ( no plug for bathing) to shower. One more note, my sink clogged from just washing my hands and it took forever to drain! No plugs in the bathroom and two small towels for bathing. I did like the staff but just wasn't that impressed with much of anything else. Maybe again, it's unfair because I miss the other hotel which catered to my company a little more. And now you know ! Cheerio!

When I first saw The Light (my friend was staying here and invited me over for some food) I thought I'd walked into a Barcelona boutique hotel. This is an apart-hotel in Manchester though, and one of the highest standard. His room - which look like an high end open plan city apartment - came with a full kitchen of gorgeous bread, butter, jam, milk, herbs, chocolates, mineral water and orange juice: everything he needed to get going in his kitchen replete with Bosch appliances. The rest of the room was stunning too, divided into sections and including a freestanding bath. The staff were so helpful and friendly, they all seem to love their job. Shortly after I arrived, my coworker told me that the place used to be a mental institution/hospital. I'm not sure how you'd react to that, but I kind of loved it and spent my free working minutes on the web, trying to learn about potentially haunted rooms and ghosts of ol' crazy people. Unfortunately, no paranormal activities at this facility. So instead, I spent my evening in the gym facility, took a spin course, and sweat my butt off. The next day I tried the swimming pool and sauna as well. I was also really pleasantly surprised that the locker rooms were equipped with fantastic hair dryers ... AND ... GHD hair straighteners. Those babies cost a couple hundred euros a piece! The lunch menu on the first day included meat and chilli beans, as well as salmon.. and then of course, some salad and lots of desert. I tried the salmon with chili beans and overdosed on proteins. So so so good. The salmon was really fresh. I ended up ordering salmon for dinner as well. The quality of the food there was really fantastic. So the reason I am giving it 4 stars, instead of 5 is because it was just cold and chilly in there. The front door was kept frequently open and I think the windows aren't properly isolated, so when the temperature drops outside, you feel it right away inside. Other than that - definitely recommended. About 35 minutes from the Manchester Airpoint (36 Pound trip by cab). Give it a try!

It's only 30 mins drive from Manchester airport but ring the hotel direct and they will give you the number for a local hackney firm they use. £40 vrs £70. More beer money for me! P.S. Hackney firm are excellent and picked us up in a brand new Toyota Avensis estate. I digress. Arrived at the hotel which is situated on its own 20 acres grounds and it is a Grade II listed building. Very nice setting. It was a Monday afternoon and the reception staff were all older ladies. Unusual but you knew they knew their stuff. Being Irish we asked when did the bar close? (We have been stung before with venues like this and the bar closing early) and to our great surprise she tells us and I quote "The bar closes when you stop drinking". Hallelujah, did she realise the trouble that was going to be in store.... Now now, we did behave ourselves I promise. P.S. This used to be a mental asylum you know! Decor very tasteful and well appointed. A small bit of a labyrinth but you get to were you are going to in nice surroundings. Room has all the 4 star mod cons, room key is a funny plastic card with holes in that you leave in the lock to open. Requested an Iron and board and had them within 5 mins. Bar nice and spacious. Best thing ever was the free american pool table but had UK sized balls, better than that was the garden sized connect 4 set!! Hours of fun for all the guys at the conference. We had teams from the UK, Ireland and Holland. A great night. Bar food really nice and prices not bad either. I'd recommend the burger with bacon and cheese served with great fries and coleslaw all on a wooden chopping board (they must have broken all the plates, ha ha ). Bar staff during the next day were hard to find and slow but that's because I'm used to Irish bar/pubs speeds. If your slow in Ireland you go out of business fast! Great conference facilities and little touches like bowls of sweets (Drumsticks, Fruit Salad and Love Hearts) during the intervals make all the difference. Breakfast & Lunch in the main restaurant was really good with a large choice. All buffet style but it just meant you got more of what you liked. Nice touch is the area between the bar and main restaurant with a free coffee/tea station and bowls of more sweets, apples, bags of crisps etc. These guys know how to look after a business conference. Will be pushing for more training and conferences here.

Affordable rates Cons: 1. Teeny tiny bathroom. If you tried to turn in the shower, your elbow will for sure hit the wall. 2. If you're sitting on the can, you probably can't shut the door as there's no room for both of your legs and feet! The pros definitely outweighed the cons, so I wouldn't mind staying here again in the future if I'm looking for something cheap, convenient, and nothing too fancy.

Beware that there is major construction taking place beside the hotel (student accommodation i think). Our view was of a building site which made my heart sink when we arrived. We were awoken at 7am with lots of hammering and drilling. Really unimpressed and disappointed that the hotel had not tried to place us in a room away from the construction. It was a Sunday night so assumed it wasn't too busy to do this. Luckily I had ear plugs as we didn't have the energy to phone and argue with the staff to get moved. The room was very spacious but to the point it felt a bit empty and souless. Gaping spaces in the room just felt unwelcoming. Plain decor with the exception of the bright carpet and bed head. Comfy bed and non-feather pillows which we prefer. Don't try checking in early as we discovered they turnaround the rooms very late. I arrived back at my room around 5.30 and the cleaning service was only then leaving. Very unusual. The air con was good as we stayed during unseasonably warm weather so nice to sleep in coolness. In terms of service, the staff seemed a bit distracted and didn't seem particularly helpful. My favourite part of the hotel is the spa which is located in another building opposite - very hot jacuzzi, with a cool small pool, and a warm small pool, with sauna, and steamroom. The sparkly lights were not on when we visited which i was disappointed with as the pictures on the website make it look really pretty. Also, they don't seem to have many padlocks for their lockers. My husband and i had to share a locker which was inconvenient being in separate changing rooms. It was a reasonable hotel but i wouldn't rush back and would certainly avoid until construction of student accommodation is finished!

I visited last Saturday night in a party of 6, eating at 8pm. we arrived slightly early so as to have a drink before dinner, first impression wasn't great as there were a huge collection of dirty glasses on the bar, oddly despite the fact that various members of staff were milling about, no one seemed to be that interested in moving or cleaning them. We took a table in the corner of the bar and were immediately aware of a gale force wind emanating from the air conditioning vent above our table. We asked for this to be turned down, the staff member informed us that it would be taken care of - it wasn't. Not until the we asked for a fourth time did the wind cease. Venturing out of the bar and into the toilet area, a general level of untidiness was again obvious. The used towel bins were completely overflowing and there was no toilet roll - I'm reliably informed that the situation was mirrored in the ladies toilet. It was around this point that we released the time had moved on towards 8:30 and we were yet to be taken to our table. upon inquiry we were informed that the table was indeed ready... why we hadn't been informed is anyone's guess. We were taken to our table a young man who immediately informed us that he didn't have enough menus, so we would have to share... he went off to look for more but never returned. This all seemed very odd given that the restaurant was little more than half full (lucky for us, how much worse could it have been??). Once again some time passed until we flagged down a passing waitress, she fetched a wine menu which the previous waiter had failed to provide, she was also able to hunt down additional menus with little trouble. The lady proceeded to inform us that she was very busy running two sections and wouldn't be able to give us too much attention. Given the incompetence of everyone we'd deal with thus far, this didn't seem like a bad thing, although it's always nice to know as a paying customer that there are other people somewhere else who are a higher priority that you - the true essence of good service and why people are happy to pay inflated prices at restaurants such as this (no.. wait a second?). Clearly noticing that our spirits were at a low ebb, the waitress decided to really lock in the bad feeling by giving us what could only be described as a 'warning' not to order the tasting menu unless we all wanted it. It sounds like I'm going over the top but we really were made to feel like naughty school children - crazy! The next disappointment came only moments later when the waitress returned to take our orders. Given it had only been about 60 seconds since we'd received our menus, it was unsurprising that no one was ready to order. I ordered some wine but was amazed by the waitresses complete lack of knowledge on the subject, especially considering the wine list contains little more than 20 different bottles!! This was highlighted when rather than repeating my order in confirmation the waitress quoted back the reference number from the menu - as if I were ordering food in a Chinese takeaway! From this point on I was continually irked throughout the meal as every time I ordered wine it was taken to another member of our table. We were only offered the opportunity to try the first bottle, I suppose all subsequent bottles were assumed to be in a suitable condition based on my review of the first. To be fair the wine was excellent, but credit here should go to the supplier rather than the restaurant. After an inordinately long wait our food arrived. before we could start a young man gave us a verbal overview of our dishes, I can only assume from his stuttering delivery that this was indeed his first night on the job, if so then it seems to unfair to criticise too much. When the food finally did arrive it was the absolute definition of mediocrity. Remarkable for nothing more than the stingy small portions and distinct lack of either quality ingredients or creativity. Vanilla is the word that springs to mind. The Peanut Parfait and Espresso Martini deserve a special mention - the former was rock hard to the point where it was impossible to eat and the other was simply disgusting - undrinkable. Cheese get an honorable mention - very pleasant... although once again, credit to the supplier rather than the restaurant. Throughout the meal the air-conditioning saga continued. it was eventually resolved shortly before we left and a comfortable temperature was restored, albeit a little late. The final insult was the bill, weighing in at a budget busting £420 - not including drinks in the bar. We paid and left... never to return. This place was more fun when it was a police station, and the food was probably better too.

You can choose up to 5 courses, which I would call starter-size. Its not quite tapas or a taster menu, but is an interesting idea. There are plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails and a wide selection of spirits and wines too. Unfortunately on this occasion we were on our own in the dining room (Sunday dinner) which was a bit strange and also the wind was howling round the building and the heavy rain did not help (hence not decent pictures as the room is quite dark), but i would come back again.
