I have to confess to finding this shop pretty overwhelming. It's a bit like heading to the mechanic in the garage to ask about the car - I probably won't understand the reply and know I'm going to have to rely on whatever they say, completely. Much as I love listening to music, I have little (or no) interest in how it's made ... so when a daughter ends up learning the saxophone, the retail branch of music-making opens up to me. Thankfully we don't need the drum sets or the amplifiers or all the other big-ticket items on display in this capacious store, but I do fervently wish I needed a whole stack of guitar picks - they come in such a delightful rainbow of colours! Needless to say, when I go into a music store, I am entirely in their hands. I remain very grateful that when I am despatched to Mall Music for a metronome or a pack of size 2.5 Alto sax reeds or a sax swab, the knowledgeable staff capably translate whatever I ask for into whatever I need. Disappointing! Went to buy a guitar for my 10 year old cousin. After consulting with a sales person for 20 minutes and picking one which the sales person said was perfect, the m.d came over and told me it's too large. I left and came back and said I still want it as she will grow into it and he would not sell it to me. Citing over and over that it had been retracted from sale and that kids up to 15 should only have a 3/4. I told him it was for me and he still refused to sell it to me. I left with a very disappointed 10 year old. read more

Good retail music store with decent prices. Wide variety of instruments -- predominantly guitars, amps and electronic keyboards -- but also have some brass and wood winds (not my thing so I'm not sure of the range or quality of these types of instruments). They've got a decent audio recording section, and accessories, pedals etc as well as a good repair shop. The thing I like about them is they know their stuff but aren't climbing all over you pushing you to buy something. I've seen them handle newbies and working muso's equally well. They don't deal in used stuff that I know of. All in all a good shop for the northern beaches. read more

This is not a guitar shop as such. There are no rude arrogant salesmen in black jeans and chisel t shirts ignoring customers and standing around blagging on about billy gibbons '58 les paul. Instead there is a wide range of good stuff, brass, reeds,keyboards, fiddles etc and pleaant helpful young and non threatening staff who really aim to please. Yeah, they do have cheap guitars but i'd say they have researched their market pretty well. No one gets snotty if you want a uke for your 5 year old ir a squier for your teenager. And ehen grandma departs they wiill sell you someting really nice like a 335 too. I have had nothing but good experiences with these guys. I have sent totally dumb friends to get things to with. Good results So why only four stars? Its personal. A small well chosen range of really good stuff from top US makers would be nice and the range of classical guitars is not great. read more

No stars. Minus in fact. I am really disgusted with Mall Music. I wanted to update my amplifiers which I take with me to charity gigs. I am not a technical person so I had to rely on the sales assistant who said he was a sound engineer. I puchased a Stage Pass 300 Yamaha PA System. I did try it out in the shop but the shop is huge and it was difficult to test. However as soon as I got it home and tried it out it wasn't suitable at all. I spoke to the manager who he told me that the PA was now second hand and that he would only give me $400 when I'd paid $799. He also said when I told him I sing 2 octaves that I should have bought a more expensive system for $2,000. At the moment the PA System is at Mall Music. I have written to the Manager and did not get a response. Times may be tough but I think this is bad business. They certainly have lost me as a potential customer nor would I recommend them to anyone I know. Sue A read more
