    Char Kuy Teow!

Malaya Corner is definitely a head-to-head food battle with many Southeast Asian restaurants! The restaurant provides many options of cuisines and they are in giant portions! The restaurant has served noodles, rices, combo rice sets, roti, curries, desserts, drinks and many dishes you may find in Southeast Asia. The dishes that filled up my tummy were char kuy teow (a little spicy from its original taste), Hainan chicken rice (so far, the BEST in Brisbane that I have, it must be really GOOD, trust ME) and lastly Nasi Lemak (a disappointing shock on my face) Nasi Lemak, I would love a stronger aroma of the coconut rice and more authentic tastes of chicken curry and beef rendang. The portion, otherwise, is very heart-satisfying with many sides to try. Please request for more sambal sauce to have with the rice if you are a chilly-crazy craver like me. The table seating is simple and more like a food court style. The waiters and waitresses can be a little challenging to communicate with due to language barriers but they are always looking forward to assist. Minimum Efpos is $25! Definitely will try other dishes and of course, the Hainan Chicken Rice again!

From Malaysian descent, I have got to admit that Malaya Corner was a bit of alright. First of all, it had my favourite green jelly drink, the chow kuey teow was a bit spicy and well wok'd, they even had a huge lemon iced tea (no, not the lipton one, the asian one). I have been bringing my family here for years, while it does get pretty busy, I have found the taste has been consistent. My favourite little place to go to for quick food, great service and huge lemon iced teas. Always very refreshing on a hot summer day. The restaurant has actually been re-built as a fire burnt the original down a few years ago, and the layout is quite inventive with outdoor tables and fans placed so they get some wind on those dry summer days as well. Smart. Thigns to try, the dry wonton noodle with bbq pork, the combination laksa, and the 'wat dan ho' wet fried noodles with egg sauce. Very yummy indeed. In the hustle and bustle of what they call the new chinatown in market square, this place offers a bit of relaxation while you eat. I've always gone in slightly non-peak times though so maybe get there a bit early so you can get a table on busy nights. Bonus... it's open til 10pm every night of the week.

Praise to the food Gods, Malaya Corner was open on New Years Day - a public holiday! They do use a public holiday menu, which doesn't feature the whole extensive menu, but all the favourites were there, so you can still have your fix of tasty Malaysian food even on those pesky public holidays. We split the Nasi Lemak, which is always a staple dish. Beef rending, chicken curry, boiled egg with Sambal Olek, peanuts and dried fish with onion, pickled vegetables and rice. The pickled vegetables are my favourite, especially the pickled cauliflower and pineapple. I love this dish because it's like a tasting plate, and Malaya Corner does it very well. We also had the Malaya Coconut Chicken curry which was a very generous portion and so very tasty. I ordered the Fried Tofu (Malaysian style), which was ok, but I'm not a huge fan of silken tofu. I prefer the firm tofu. You must try the Lemon Iced tea (Hong Kong style) which is a huge serving of sweet, lemony black tea. Remember to muddle the lemon slices with the spoon before drinking to release all the flavour. We also had a Watermelon frappe, which was so cold and refreshing.

Malaya Corner is always popular with the students but there's nothing stopping it being a family friendly, affordable and tasty dining venue for everyone. Their menu option is impressive and shows off the variety of flavours associated with Malaysian cuisine. There's hot, sour, salty and sweet although if you do want something fresh, order an accompaniment of fresh Asian greens like Choi Sum. For a main, I like the Hainan Chicken for a rice option or try their tasty laksa or Char Keow Teow for a noodle dish. Parking can be problematic for Market Square at peak times. There is the option of public transport or try a side street behind Market Square.

Interesting how there isn't a review yet for this place…read more My family has been coming here for years, especially my parents. The Chinese food here is authentic Cantonese style. My parents like to order their steamed fish which isn't cheap but it is so good. The "sang choy bao" or lettuce wraps are really good, very flavorful, and there usually isn't enough of it to go around. I want at least 2 cups but usually, there is only 1 for each person. The thin fried noodles (vegetarian) -- "see yau wong chow meen" -- is stellar! Perfectly dry like it should be and flavor-packed. The only thing I didn't love was the crispy skin chicken. The skin wasn't really crispy. Each time I go home, this is one of those restaurants where we will go for at least one meal. It's good to know that it's remained consistent through the years.

Here's why: - Warm welcome from the charming and funny manager upon entry. - Were introduced to George the fish (we sat next to his tank). - Very friendly, smiling wait staff had nice chats with us whenever they brought something to the table. - Complimentary prawn crackers were served as a starter while we perused the menu. - They make the best salt and pepper tofu ever (speaking as someone who doesn't usually like tofu). - Delicious braised chicken with cashews and sizzling Mongolian beef. Best in town! - Nice atmosphere and full of happy diners having the best time!

They've opened late on me once, and another time they asked me to sit outside so they could leave and lock the door (I hope they picked up my plate later), even though it really wasn't that bad of a time (before 2:00). They are not big on staying open outside a very narrow range of hours. They also charge extra for rice, and managed to sell me a dish without reminding me of that only to have me rustle up change to pay for some rice once my dinner arrived without it. Their beaten up tables and tiny space offer little in the way of ambiance. But if you want a good fried tofu dish, you won't be disappointed. All the things I've ordered have been tasty, notably a sizzling tofu in black pepper sauce that did indeed sizzle nicely. They have plenty of other dishes that I would want to try, and no one's more of a sucker for all-vegetarian Asian restaurants than I am. Luckily for them, I sometimes have business in the area, so I probably will continue to eat here on occasion. That being said, I don't see how I can rate them any better than this, even though I do enjoy the food, as their prices are not low, and they have not got much else going for them.

Call it what you may, it has always been the deal breaker with my love for meat. Should I ever decide that it was time for me to go vegetarian, it would be because of tofu. I was raised on soy products being from Malaysian heritage... so it should really come as no surprise that everything from soft tofu cooked broth to your agedashi fried tofu to you hot pot tofu to you egg tofu, are all things that I have had many a love affair with. Sometimes at the same time (tsk tsk). So when I met Su Life, an instant bond took affect. There is nothing better than tofu than tofu imitating meat. How good is it to order some barbeque chinese pork (char siu) and have it come out, looking so delicious with its red tingy edges marinaded to perfection. How yummy it tastes when you have the first bite. How delightful when you know it's vegetarian tofu imitating pork so well you can hardly tell the truth. Su Life was that for me, they do the non-meats so well sometimes the texture is astounding...especially the fish. Looks just like it. Could have fooled me, and the idiot meat eater sitting on the next table thinking he was actually eating meat. Surprise! What a surprise Su Life was Yelpers. It may not be much to look at, but boy can it provide meat with a good run for its money.
