After doing some research I figured out I might be a candidate for a laparoscopic robotic procedure. Lucky my health insurance company was in network with Dr Brathwaite because there was only a handful of surgeons like him that do the procedure near where I live. Took a little waiting but once everything was planned and approved , the Dr and NYU/ Winthrop facility /staff did a great job. The whole process was way better and faster than I expected. I'm 8 weeks post op now and I've been feeling normal for the past 4 weeks, returned to work after 2 weeks. Thank you Dr Brathwaite and staff I finally feel normal after several years with a deformed abdomen.

When I was a new patient the staff made sure that I received the paperwork prior to arrival so that the process was quick and easy when I got there. I am a skeptic when it comes to doctors and whether they are knowledgeable due to personal experience with quack doctors that led to a previous lung collapse and a near plane death experience after failure to diagnose by not taking an X-ray, I know my fair share of bad doctors. Let's just say considering I've moved to Brooklyn and I'm still going to Long Island to see a doctor speaks a lot about my personal and professional feelings towards this doctor.

The number…read moreis 718-818-4020 I decided to have gastric bypass this past summer after a long struggle with my weight due to PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome. I chose Dr. Barkan because his office was near to my home in Staten Island. The doctor saw me in June and discussed the two surgeries he is performing at the moment. I was initially thinking of having the gastric sleeve procedure but changed to gastric bypass on account of starting to become diabetic. I wanted to reverse my diabetes and other conditions quickly. The initial visit consists of a weigh in, meeting with the surgeon and then a review of the program pre-requisites with his nurse. You are given a list of appointments and tests that must be completed prior to scheduling surgery. They have a list of doctors that you can choose from to complete the pre-testing or you can go to your own doctors. I used all of the recommended doctors except one. I found it very easy to complete the required workup. I was finally scheduled for surgery in early August 2020 and my surgery went very well. When I returned home I had a few incidents of feeling weak and Dr. Barkan returned my calls almost immediately. I felt very cared for by Dr. Barkan. I had a complication from having food stuck in my new pouch and ended up in the emergency room screaming in pain. That was due to trying to progress through the stages too quickly and eating too large a portion of canned salmon. The initial diagnosis was small bowel obstruction which normally requires surgery. Dr. Barkan in his wisdom decided to observe me for twenty four hours instead. I avoid an unnecessary surgery and he even had his nurse come to my bedside in the hospital to troubleshoot what went wrong. His nurse spent a good half hour retracing my steps with regards to my diet. He came to see me two days in a row and gave me encouragement to slowly resume my diet again. I am doing much better but going slow with adding foods. I think Dr. Barkan is one of the nicest people I have ever met. Not to mention a great doctor. You will be safe with Dr. Barkan. Go for it!

This pathetic excuse for a practitioner strung me along for the better part of a decade. He never showed up for appointments, instead sending unqualified PAs in his place to deliver advice that was not very helpful. He finally appeared from the shadows last summer, scheduled me for surgery on 7/1/25. I did everything he asked to be ready, went to every doctor with whom he shared the bounty of my insurance payments and co-pays. His lackeys told me all month, and the months prior that all was good...even days before the procedure was to take place. I literally jumped through every hoop. But in the end I should have known...I should have worn my Charlie Brown zigzag shirt and football helmet. Because this (@#$%&) pulled that football away just 21 hours before. And like the Wizard of Oz himself, he told me to comeback when I lose 50 pounds (and probably would not need surgery); and this after I already lost the 25 pounds that he and his flying monkeys told me to lose to qualify. Shame on this horrible practice and their awful "leader."
