Its been over a year since I was last at the Pickering Makimono, at that time the food was bland and was not worth the price. The Food has improved but be aware of the chipped bowls ,plates and soup spoons we almost cut our selves on them.We also had long wait times for each order come on I'm hungry !! Servers except for one can barley speak English. You would think that at $25 plus per person that they could afford better quality serve ware ! Also what's with charging extra for pop at an all you can eat seems like a CASH GRAB. We did complain to the manager who we had to actually demand to see ( In this day in age ). She looked at us like we were a bother and gave us a 10 % discount which worked out to be$ 2.00. we asked to pay by debit .. but guess what NO DEBIT.. however you can use there own ABM with a 2.00 SERVICE FEE !!!! piss off ! .....what a joke. We've been to this location quite a number of times and we've suggested it to quite a few friends. The food is decent enough and the kids love the ipad ordering and the selection for the AYCE dinner menu. However, the service has always been borderline. We visited recently and that's the last straw. We won't be back and we'll make sure that nobody we know goes back either. Makimono, at this point I think you need to fire your entire waiting staff and get some employees with basic people skills and manners. Our kids wanted forks. We asked once and nothing came. We asked a second time (15 minutes later, when we already have food in front of us) and they waitress seemed to be annoyed. We got forks eventually. Asked for wasabi for our rolls; Waitress was annoyed again and it took forever. Left all the dirty plates on our table for almost the entire meal. Food was slow to come out and then 1/2 hour later started coming out rapid fire. They never came by to fill up water. Every time they delivered something to our table I was gracious with a "thank-you very much" etc...but never a word back - mostly grunts. They randomly seem to decide that you shouldn't have some of the things you order as well. Eventually, we asked about an item that was never delivered to our table and the waitress reluctantly apologized and asked if we want anything else because "we need the ipad back now". LMAO. So yeah, AYCE really means AYCE until they think you've had enough. We ate a healthy amount, sure....but not anything over the top (3 Adults and 2 12 year olds). Our bill was split in two (for the two families that made up our visit). I gave a standard 15% tip thinking "fine...but I'll never come back" and the other family left a small tip (which is what was really deserved). On the way out our waitress was talking to another waiter who was pointing at us and laughing as we left. Classy. I hope the novelty of your ipads carry you to continued success because the food quality and most certainly the service, absolutely will not. I used to think that this place was amazing before having been to any other all you can eat sushi restaurant... Makimono pales in comparison. The rolls are mediocre, selection for vegetarians is OK, and I once found a hair on my gyoza. Service is OK also, however our server once made us redo our order form because we "marked our orders down wrong" when she never actually told us how to "mark them down correctly", and was even then reluctant to give us a new paper to redo it on. In terms of the take-out menu, it's quite expensive for not-so-high quality items. The one thing I like about this place over other all you can eat sushi restaurants is the atmosphere; the place is big and there's some nice booths and rooms that you can sit at. Overall, while many people in Pickering love Makimono (as they have never had an alternative), I would suggest checking out some other all you can eat sushi places nearby. Sushi T&T in Ajax is wonderful and not much further (and I believe less expensive)! read more

iPad ordering system is efficient. Fish quality (taste, texture) poor compared to a handful of nearby sushi restaurants. Cooked food quality (taste, texture) also poor. My wife and I have come here many times. Each time the food quality is great, place is clean and the staff are fast. The salmon sashimi and coconut shrimp are my favourite items. The rolls are also always a win, especially the dragon roll! It gets really busy on Friday and Saturday evenings which sometimes lead to them missing a couple of items you ordered. This is not really a big deal because you can order it again and all of the benefits of this location outweigh that minor negative. Definitely a top sushi place for Durham. read more

This place is great. All the food was good for the most part. We ordered a series of courses and tons of sushi. The shrimp tempura was excellent. Most of the rolls we had were great. There a couple of things that lacked in quality to me. It was the sashimi, the salmon was not as fresh as I would have liked. The teriyaki salmon was bland and without the teriyaki sauce I wouldn't have been able to eat it. The beef was good, the seaweed salad was good. The seafood fried rice was good but the scallops are definitely imitation, we could have done without the pink swirl design on it. Otherwise, everything was great. Oh yeah, a tall can of Sapporo is $9.50. Overall, for the amount of food you get, it is a value compared to the price. read more

Extremely disappointed about how quickly this place has gone downhill. I've been a loyal customer since this location was established, but my most recent experience has driven me away for good. I went here for all you can eat lunch with my mom prior to heading to an appointment, and the service was very poor. First off, we were given defective ipads to order off of. I strongly believe the staff were aware that the ipads were acting up before we ordered, because we saw them fiddling around with it for a long time (longer than usual, as we have been to multiple AYCE places using the same system) prior to giving it to us. When we ordered, we waited quite a bit of time only for the staff to come back and tell us that the ipad was defective and we needed to place our entire order over again. We finally placed the order with a (supposedly) working ipad, and proceeded to wait another 15 minutes for one order of hot and sour soup to arrive (for people who frequent AYCE sushi restaurants, this is extremely slow service). When it came, it smelled foul and was extremely thick, to the point where we had to give it back because it was absolutely nauseating. We know what good hot and sour soup is supposed to look, smell, and taste like. We were then slowly served 2 other dishes (one order of black pepper beef and stir dried udon), while other tables who arrived after us were quickly being served what looked like their full orders (tons of sushi, tempura, meat, etc). We sat there waiting with 2 measly dishes. No one approached us to give us an update on our order until we called them over to ask them. The service did not have friendly body language. They would quickly reassure us that it was coming, but never followed up. We ended up waiting an hour for the rest of our meal, and we needed to constantly call servers over to ask them if the rest of the food was coming. They also had to confirm with us what food we had not received yet - only when we called them over. We did not even receive our full order by the end of our meal. The food quality itself has also deteriorated. I would say it's worth it to just check out some places in Scarborough or Markham if you want to feel like you're getting a quality meal for the money you are paying. The rolls are tiny, the quality of ingredients is visibly poor, and the selection has diminished. They seem to be offering more Chinese/Thai style dishes and less of the actual sushi. Even for a lunch menu. After a little over an hour and 15 minutes, we were going to be late for our appointment and we could not even finish our meal. Not to mention, we were no longer even hungry after waiting so long for each dish. The server told us that we could pack up the rest of the meal if we wanted, but that's all she could do for the massively inconvenient meal and unaccommodating service. We asked to speak to a manager. The manager then hesitantly offered a measly 20% discount after we had asked for something to be done with the bill. Apparently knocking off a little bit more than the tax is the only way they can compensate. She also said they wouldn't charge us if we wanted to take the food home, which they would inevitably be throwing out anyways. She said this to our face. Just overall poor customer service, management and food quality. The worst I have ever experienced from any AYCE sushi place - and I have been to some very sketchy places over the years. I am normally very patient and understanding with staff, and not even picky with food quality. It speaks volumes that I even made the effort to write a negative review of this place. This place is close to my heart as it was the first really good place to come into Pickering, but times have obviously changed. I certainly hope that they revamp the management of the place and return to the quality that it used to be known for. read more

This place has down completely downhill since undergoing new management (a friendly, young man with a mohawk has been replaced by a bitter old man). This was always one of my go-to sushi spots that has always provided excellent service and food quality. Servers were very attentive and I was always seated within 30seconds of arrival. My two friends & I arrived at Makimono at 9pm. We stood at the door for 5mins until we were finally approached. The restaurant wasn't busy at all! We were finally seated but the light above us was broken and flickering. When asked to switch tables, the server let the mgr know and he threw a fit and gave my friends and us cut-eye. 70% of the tables were unoccupied so switching us to a different table should have been no problem. We sat at a different table and with the restaurant being almost empty, it still took a few minutes for a server to acknowledge us and to take our ordering sheet. The table did not have any place settings after minutes of us being seated. The tables are now covered in a white paper which makes you feel like you're eating at a cheap place. We had to ask for plates and chopsticks after appetizers were served. There were a few servers on the floor and it should never take that long to set a table. A customer should never have to ask for a place setting. Our hot food was delivered within minutes but it took an extra half hour for our rolls to be served. Getting to Makimono at 9pm, we were aware that the kitchen closes at 10pm and we thought we had plenty of time to eat considering service has always been quick and efficient. We did not receive any of our rolls until 9:45pm, 45mins after arrival. Needless to say, that was the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant and it's such a disappointment that Makimono used to be one of my favourites. I don't recommend anyone to go to Makimono. There is a place in Ajax called Sushi Mountain that provides the same great service and food quality as the old Makimono. read more

A friend and I had gone for dinner, and we ordered quite a bit of food that never showed up. Our glasses were empty for awhile before we flagged someone down to refill them. DO NOT HOST PARTIES HERE!!! I hosted a party of 50 people here and it was a bad experience from the start. I was first told in person that we would be given a 10% discount for such a large party, but when we called to formally book suddenly they had no idea about said discount, had me speak to a few different confused employees, and when I finally asked to speak with the manager they handed the phone to someone that just pretended to be the manager and also denied me the discount. We should have known at that point not to bother with this restaurant, but foolish us went ahead anyway. We phoned again a few days later and the manager, Anna, finally confirmed the discount. I tried to tell her about the hard time her staff had given me, and how they had even pretended to be the manager just to get me off the phone, but she just shrugged it off. I also told her that we were inviting 70 people but would likely have less than that actually show up, and she told me she would phone me a few days before to confirm numbers, but she never did. (She only called our house on the day of the event, at which time we had already left.) On the day of the event, Anna pulled me aside to ask how many people I was expecting. I told her around 50. She then proceeded to scold me because they had reserved us 70 seats and apparently were super busy with walk-in customers prior to our arrival. She was SO ANGRY, and said she had been calling all morning to try to reach me. (Again, we weren't home to pick up the phone!) I stared at her blankly in shock. And she again repeated the exact same thing to me IN ANGER, turned her back to me and continued on with her work. So needless to say Anna ruined for me what was supposed to be a very joyous occasion. I am sorry that you lost a few walk-in customers that day, but I am certain that none of them were gonna spend anywhere near the same amount of money in your restaurant than I was, especially during off-peak hours! And by the way, with the way the tables were grouped, we filled up nearly all of the space that you had allotted to us! I believe it was just 2 small tables that were extra. Anna's rudeness and unprofessional staff are my main complaint. On top of that the food came extremely slow for all guests. read more

If I could give lower stars I would. Let's start with the food that causes you to have diarrhea within 45 mins after consuming their food. Unfortuantely that isn't the first time this has happened. I came here about 5 years ago, and the same thing happened. I hadnt gone back until this past week, and what a MISTAKE that was. We drove from downtown Toronto to come and eat here but it was NOT worth it. Not to mention - the Manager of this place is one of the RUDEST people I have ever met. She tried to blame us for getting sick off THEIR food. Wouldn't let me speak and continued to interrupt me to try and tell me that it must be my fault because I only ate a muffin this morning and that's why I got sick. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That makes no sense. And to make us pay for something that we were unhappy with. We left within the hour and she didn't have an ounce of good customer service. The sushi selection is quite mediocre and the taste is fairly bland. While this place is certainly better than Sushi Mountain in Ajax, the general quality of the sushi is quite mediocre at best. The other food though is fine and I'd recommend trying the non-sushi items vs. the sushi. If you want good sushi try some of the non-all you can eat places, or get some very fresh fish and make it yourself. It's a lot easier than you think. read more

Terrible service when it is busy. We had to wait to be seated, and ordered food very quickly once we were, however, the issue was for them to actually bring the food. It took them 40 minutes to bring any food, and then another 30-40 minutes between each order. We had to ask the waitress for our food a couple of times. At the end we had to ask for the bill twice and waited 30 minutes for the bill alone. I feel like my table was ignored the whole night. We, thankfully, left after 3 hours of absolutely terrible service. It was very disappointing. The food is alright there. They brought things that we didn't order once in a while. If they can't handle a busy night I would suggest they either hire more cooks or figure out a better system for the busy hours, because it's just ridiculous. I am sorry to say they have lost a customer. There are a lot better sushi places out there. read more

The new ipads are cool, but it seems like an excuse not to talk to you. The miso soup was warm at best, the sashimi was cut too thick to enjoy, the unagi was sub par, and they forgot our tempura twice! On top of all that, my drinking glass was covered in water spots and wasn't cleaned properly, as the head of my beer withered quickly and completely. I've given this place 4 tries, and it feels like its gotten worse every time. I'm done here, and going to edemame just a fee minutes north at the hub at Kingston road. read more

''Been to this restaurant 2x already and in both occasions we go for the all-you-can-eat menu. Last night (Dec. 29/12) we started with green tea and it was simply boiled water no tea aroma nor taste. When I complained, the server who looks unhappy with my remark that it was the weakest tea I've ever tasted replied "It's a colorless tea". Never heard such tea!. the server brought us another kettle of tea but it taste the same water down with perhaps a little of the aroma. The other thing I noticed was the absence of "sushi" dish on the buffet menu and the sashimi was limited. No tuna and the crab is imitation not the real thing! Except for the salmon sashimi, the rest are sliced so thin. The servers makes you feel like unwelcome with their serious looks with most do not put on a smile at all.
