I love Maki Swim School. My 11 yo son used to be afraid with his face down on the pool but after few lessons at Maki Swim School he built his confidence being in the water. Coach Matthew is great! He is very patient with my son and always updates me with his progress. My son used to go at waterworks aquatics and I had to cancel his lessons there because he couldn't stand the smell of chlorine and he is a bit claustrophobic. Maki has a great environment. Their pool doesn't have a strong chlorine smell and I like how its not completely closed off. The tent is well ventilated and I like how they open the vinyl on hot days. My son feels comfortable and safe. Sandie has always been very helpful since my first interaction with her. She even offered a tour of the facility and a trial swim before we can commit. We had our two daughters at Maki Swim for nearly two years. The pool is clean, heated, and covered, and some individual coaches were genuinely caring and skilled. Unfortunately, constant coach changes meant our younger daughter never learned to swim despite two years of lessons -- every time progress was made, a new instructor reset the process. When we finally found a coach who worked for both girls, the school switched them without any discussion. When we raised concerns, the person running the school (Maggie) was dismissive and condescending rather than willing to listen. We also dealt with frequent last-minute cancellations (Sandy expecting immediate response last minute ). The coaches themselves were often great, but management's poor communication made it impossible to continue. Get all commitments in writing before enrolling. read more

Overall I will say good and bad but depends on you. The coaches are excellent (esp Coach Matthew, Coach Chas and Coach Destinee) and the facility is welcoming and cute but is an older facility. They have made some improvements to the structure. The receptionist/treasurer Sandy is a bit rude unfortunately. She has gotten short with me when I expressed that I prefer email communication and to only call if it is a true emergency. Scheduling can be last minute and I get that but I respond within 1 or 2 hrs via email and can't always chat on the phone due to my work and personal life. I have even gotten a phone call after 9 pm one day from her and it was just to let me know about scheduling! Not urgent. I will say though that they have tried thier best to notify me about changes to the coaches which is appreciated and I have returned the favor by being as clear as I can. They baby chaging station near the pool is between the men and women's bathroom's and doesn't get used much. Personally I would prefer it in both shower/bathrooms to feel comfortable changing my baby there so I get it. They have a changing room inside away from the pool though. It would be nice if the showers had more coverage as the curtains are a bit flimsy and gap quite a bit. The pool is covered so the sun protection is appreciated. The pool can get somewhat crowded so free swim is restricted to a very small area. The classes can collide some but it makes sense due to the pool size. My older daughter learned to swim here so with patient instructors and some time, goals can be reached here! This place is very very obsessed with yelp reviews and I was pressured to amend and clarify my previous review. This may or may not have happened with others. We had a decent experience there, but because you have to deal with the manager (who can be pleasant at times except in my experience when it comes to misunderstandings and communication boundaries) it can be a bit of deterent. read more

Instructors are great. We have had a few different instructors because of scheduling changes but that has not hindered our child's development. We came to Maki after going to the much bigger facility down Bascom (our child had a hard time with the facility there) and they did great! The environment is very welcoming and the instructors/staff are so knowledgeable and kind. They take their time to teach each individual child in regards to their swimming skills. My daughter was always terrified of her face having any drops of water touch her skin and in the first two lessons she was already going underwater and holding her breath. I'm in awe at how fast she was able to pickup the swim lessons and look forward to see how much more she grows in each skill as time progresses. PROS: My toddler started Big Fish swim classes back in June and grew in her confidence in the water. Now that she's three, she's a bit older than the average age of the other kids in the class and I think, for some of the movements they teach in the class. However, it was great for her as she was not a fan of putting her face underwater prior to the classes and now she is able to do it and blow bubbles. Our instructor, Chas, is great with her songs and she's really good at explaining why we do certain movements and what the objectives may be. They have a small section of the pool to allow kids to continue to swim and play before/after class. CONS: It is an outdoor pool that is bordered by thick clear vinyl. It can get very hot and humid with little airflow. My first visit I was hit with the smell of humid chlorine. It was a bit much for me. The condition of the bathrooms leave much to be desired. Mildew, wear and tear - personally, I try to let as little of my things touch surfaces. Most importantly though, is the temperature of the showers. It is way too hot, even when I leave it on the coldest setting without losing water pressure, and my toddler constantly complains. Last week, I saw a mother with a bucket grab cold water from the sink to wash her son. I wish there were other group classes besides Big Fish. Maki Swim is great! We've enrolled our son in the infant fish class and he has so much fun and has made so much progress in enjoying time in the water! Our teacher is Chaz and she is very skilled and experienced with infants, though she seems to have a lot of classes to teach. I like the temperature of the pool but I would love to see a refresh of the bathrooms/showers/changing areas. I think the diaper changing stations aren't the cleanest and I wish there were areas in each respective bathroom vs just in the middle of the open area. read more

Our son has been attending Maki Swim School since August. The instructors are very friendly and great with kids -- they make the classes fun by singing songs and creating a positive atmosphere. The school is also very accommodating with scheduling, which we really appreciate. Overall, it's been an okay experience. The facility itself is alright, but the shower water is often too hot to rinse our baby comfortably. During the summer months, it can feel quite warm inside since there's little air circulation due to the vinyl curtains, and there's a noticeable humid chlorine smell. read more

We've loved Maki Swim School! I currently have all 3 kids enrolled. They range in ability from completely first swim lesson for my 3 year old, to starting strokes for my 7 year old. My 5 year old had spent a few seasons at another swim school nearby, but they were never able to get her comfortable enough to get her head in the water. We were happily surprised that Coach Matthew was able to get her to try at her very first lesson! It's definitely a very homey environment, and I think it helps the kids feel more willing to try something new. We attended Maki for 2 years for swim lessons and have attended their summer camp the last 2 summers. I cannot say enough about how amazing Maki and all of their teachers/staff are. Lessons: I love that their lessons are private and designed to meet each kid where they are. Both my girls became water safe and learned to swim well. We have had coach Maria and coach Chas and both are incredible. Camp: my kids love their camp. I struggle to get them to come home with me at the end of the day. They swim daily for an hour and get instruction/lessons during that time. The hour in the pool every day was what really got my kids to be very water safe and comfortable in the pool. The rest of the day they get to hang with friends and do fun games and projects. Again, it is my kids favorite camp! The staff is incredible and so caring. They treat us like family. This is an amazing place for young kids. We started our boys at Maki with Dr Janet when they were 3 and 5. Two years later they both know all swimming styles and enjoy being in the water. Dr Janet was super patient, caring and friendly. Our kids were different ages and had very different personalities and attitudes towards water. And Dr Janet personalized her approach with each of them, which was very interesting to watch. She always managed to get them do what was needed, even when they got scared at first or tried to fool around. She is very experienced and it shows. We saw her working with special kids too, and she was great. Our lessons were on Sundays, and most of the time there was barely anybody else in the pool, which was very helpful because the boys were little and easily distracted. The owner was always very friendly and reasonable about cancellations: if a kid woke up sick in the morning, they were ok with a short notice and preferred not to have sick kids coming in and making the teacher sick. We never abused this kind policy and were very grateful to have it. They also were great with rescheduling requests: it was very helpful to have lessons on different days or times when we couldn't make it as consistency is very important. The water is heated very well, which is great for kids but makes the waiting time pretty hot in summer. I highly recommend coming with an iced drink to survive in hot weather :) Especially if you have two 30 minute lessons back to back. Another great thing about this place is that they can play in the shallow area - our kids always had a blast. If I could give this place 3.5 stars, I think that would be more accurate. TLDR: teachers are great here and you learn a lot but they push your kids to go under water and it's a bit much for toddlers. This is perfect for babies since they don't know any better! Scheduling: Maggie had been very responsive from the beginning. I thought it was a bit strange that they have a "custom schedule" and I still am unsure as how they make it work! We decided for a 4:30 PM slot since the weekend AM slots were taken (unsurprising of course). Then, a couple of weeks later we were notified that they canceled the 4:30 PM class since there weren't very many consistent participants. That was a shock and it just makes me question the whole "we customize to your schedule." Of course, I understand needing to justify paying your coach/instructor and having enough participants in a class, but it did leave a sour taste in my mouth. We ended up with the 11:30 AM Saturday class, so scheduling worked out in the end. Teacher: I believe they are called "coaches" and she had coach tyler. He was transparent and incorporated some songs into the class along with swimming poses, which my daughter loved. Tyler definitely pushed the kiddos to their threshold/limit, so basically each of the kids (including ours) cried at some point, but I understand what he was trying to do, since you don't really know someone's threshold/limit, until you get them to that point. In a matter of 30 minutes, she was able to "monkey crawl" her hands from side to side on the edge of the pool, I was able to help her "crawl" on her stomach and then hold her head against my chest as she fluttered on her back. We worked on dipping their ears into the water as well. He definitely knows what he is doing. We tried out AVAC for a couple of classes and the quality of the teachers here is incomparable, honestly. Maggie knows how to hire good quality teachers who know what they are doing and are experienced. We now have Coach Destiny and she is amazing! I did talk to her about not putting our daughter under water since that ongoing "push" ruptured her experience at the pool :-/. She was definitely accommodating. I find that toddlers have a harder time in the classes because of the "under water" agenda and push. Babies are all about it typically. we have had two different class times and in each one, more of the toddlers are throwing tantrums and freaking out about going under water. I do like that they have some toys around, so they were okay with us staying in the pool 5 minutes after the class ended so that she could have some more fun. Restroom: I was a little put off by the restroom. You enter the "restroom" and it's a changing area and then in the back corner there is a curtain. That's it. one toilet is sectioned off by a curtain. it honestly doesn't feel very private. On the plus side, it's on the smaller side of a toilet, so it's great for little ones. Vibe: it definitely has a small town Hawaii kind of vibe. The pool is on the smaller side, and we almost ran into a couple of other kiddos and their teachers, but it worked out fine. It's oudoors, which is great, and you don't run into the weird acoustics in indoor pools, where you have to strain in order to hear the teacher. Cost: Swimming lessons are costly in the bay area, but this place is relatively reasonable. They offer a discount if you're a teacher, which is great. read more

Our son has been going to Maki Swim school for almost a year for a 1:1 swim class and we have really liked the experience. The swim teachers are very patient with the kids and know how to work well with them. Our son's teacher first made him comfortable with water by reducing his fear of water and then got him started on the different strokes. While our son used to not like swimming for the first few classes, as he got better he started looking forward to his weekly swim class. All swim teachers are generally very good. The facility itself is good as well. They have many swim toys for the kids and ample sitting area for the parents. I really was excited to start my baby in swim lessons especially with all the rave reviews, but unfortunately had a bunch of compounding bad experiences at our first lesson at this school. The staff told me via email it was "not typical", but here's what I experienced. On arrival, there was a very tiny parking lot (fits 8 cars?) with limited (full) street parking, and a strip mall across the way I did not want to risk getting towed out of for parking in. The office had no one in it, and there was just no staff on site to receive a new family to check them in and tell them where to go. I asked another random parent where to go to check in and they just told me there was an office but no one was there that day. I found the changing room next to the pool, but there was no clear safe place to put my baby down so I could change. Thankfully I came already in my swim suit, but I had to change out of my swimsuit into dry clothes in the parking lot because the car seat was the only safe place I could put my baby down. Supposedly there is an inside area that is clean and dry and safe for a baby, but there was no staff member there to direct me there. Maybe having just a single point-of-contact staff to welcome and direct me to a safe place to set my baby down and change could have made a big difference in my overall experience, but that wasn't the case. The other baby parents either had a partner to help manage their baby out of the pool, or an older baby who could stand on their own and follow instructions outside the pool. I was there alone and completely overwhelmed. I had to visually seek out the moms of other babies to figure out where to go amid the chaos of many other older kid swim lessons going on in the pool. The lesson just started spontaneously in the pool, good luck if you've never been there before and didn't happen to just get in the pool on your own and flock to the few other babies and toddlers. The pool was very loud and difficult to hear the instructor. The instructor ignored me telling him that it was our first time (or I suppose didn't hear me, it was very loud and difficult to hear) and did not make any effort to give additional instruction, just said things like "ok we're doing pizza now!" as if I was supposed to know what that meant. Imagine showing up to your first yoga class, being told to do pigeon pose and expected to just do it...except except also putting a baby into that pose and in a pool! I just sort of struggled along trying to copy what the other parents were doing with their babies, sometimes just saying out loud, "what am I supposed to do?" and getting some advice from another mom while they were themselves busy managing their own baby in the pool. Even when he gave some instruction of the goal of the exercise, he gave no tips for how to accomplish it and I had to copy what the other moms were doing with finding random toys on the side to use as a lure for their kids. There was some exercise involving a thin foam mat in the water and I just stood there not understanding what I was supposed to do with that mat to accomplish the new named exercise, so he took my baby to get him into position on the mat, and my baby crawled across the top of it away from him (probably off the other side into the water if I didn't intervene) and he just exclaimed, "I've never seen a baby do that!" as if that's supposed to instill confidence. Everything was a very chaotic trial by fire, and I felt lucky to have previously brought my baby into a pool so this was not his first experience, because he was also very overwhelmed by the chaos and how quickly we went from new thing to new confusing thing, submerged under water for the first time ever by the instructor without warning to prepare him to hold his breath, toys suddenly tossed at him and then suddenly taken away. I can only hope my baby (who is not in daycare) does not get sick from this random basket of toys the instructor flung at the kids that went straight into my baby's mouth. The lesson abruptly ended and the instructor told other parents what to practice with their baby and said nothing to me, just rushed off. I felt very unwelcome and like an inconvenience for being brand new, by the instructor and by the facility as a whole. What a terrible first swim lesson for my baby. I was told the instructor thought we were a transfer from another lesson, a kid with the same name. Maybe actually having administrative staff on site to do check-ins, guide newcomers, and actually rounding up the group on land where everyone can hear each other to do intros with the instructor before everyone getting into the loud and crowded pool, would go a long way. read more

This rating is solely for a birthday party we had here for my sons 9th birthday in March. From touring the place to booking the date was easy. Correspondence was quick and we got answers to all our questions. The pool was a perfect size and depth to accommodate 15 kids. The one downside is the changing area does not accommodate many kids at one time. But luckily the temperature inside was warm so the kids weren't cold while waiting their turn. Use of the toys and other floating devices was nice and the slide was the highlight! Plenty of tables and chairs were provided. The kiddos had a lot of fun! The lifeguard helped make it a safe event. If you are considering a fun small party for your kid that is protected from the elements, I highly recommend Maki Swim School. read more

Went in the pool with two of my children a long while ago. It's outdoors, cozy and small. They had a family night which was cool.!At the time, it was very reasonable and convenient I never saw ore than about 7 other people at a time in the Pool when we went in the early afternoon or late morning. The water was kept plenty warm ****, ( what you want to know right?), and yes, the pool was clean . Fish Class - I became familiar with Maki's through a family I was nannying for in 2014. The little girl was taking the fish class with her mom and I would get in with her occasionally. I'm definitely glad I did because the class is not only for the kids, but also a way to get the parents comfortable WITH small children in the water. I was part of a mom's group with kids the same age and we constantly would go swimming together. To see the difference in "comfort" between the girl and her friends/mom's that hadn't done swim lessons was drastic. Fast forward a few years, I have my own daughter who I knew needed to be in swim lessons right away. We enrolled her around 8m old and she also caught on very quickly thanks to the great instructors! At this point, I was more than comfortable having a baby in the water considering I had been able to practice what I learned in 2014 with my nieces and nephews. The coach could tell that I was plenty comfortable and would help push my daughter and I to learn more, even while there were other parents in the same class hesitant to put their children in the water. It is a group class with a private feel, you get that 1:1 attention and instruction even in the group setting and everyone is pushed to what they are comfortable with with their children. AMAZING if you ask me. They aren't following a text book, it's based on the child! The pandemic hits...we are forced to end our swim lessons for my daughter due to the shut down. It was about September or October that we were able to get her back into the fish class. After swimming all summer 2020 and practicing what we previously learned in 2019 my daughter essentially skilled out of the fish class and the instructor said she wouldn't benefit any longer from the class (although still welcomed) and they wanted more individualized time with her. I agreed. Semi-privates 2021: It was time to start semi-privates but with the pandemic taking a hit on our wallets and jobs, we knew privates wasn't financially the greatest plan for us. So we talked to the owners and they mentioned a "build-your-own-group" plan. This is due to the pandemic and having to keep the kids as safe as possible. With the pandemic still rolling, I knew I would prefer that anyway so I could have a group lesson with our bubble and avoid too much outside exposure for my daughter. My nanny family had been talking about getting her two daughters back into swim lessons. They are huge on surfing and hoping to get them strong enough for the open ocean and jr guard. At this time, they are 7 and 5 years old. The 7YO knew how to swim but not strong enough to be confident in the ocean, the 5YO refused to go into any body of water (even shallow) without her floaties on. My daughter was just about to turn 2 then and was almost TOO confident that she would just jump in the water without fear, we needed to teach her what to do once she got in the water if she didn't have an adult there to catch her. (in case of an emergency of course, we 1000% watch her at all times). The 3 girls had a group lesson where they each got individual time with the coach but also the coach could tell they feed off each other. My daughter wants to copy EVERYTHING they do and the 5YO wanted to "teach" her as many cool things as possible which ended up pushing her to do more. The fact that the coach caught on to this and utilized it to teach the kids is tremendous. Spring 2021 comes along and now my daughter has attachment issues, screaming and crying if she isn't with me...for the better it was time for us to take a break. The other girls spend the summer out of state so they took a break as well. Time when I made a horrible decision: It was time to get back in the water, my daughter was 6+ months older but still a little clingy. I had a feeling she needed me to be in the water with her to avoid "wasting" lessons because she would just cry the whole time since I wasn't with her. (no - it wasn't the coach or the water I was worried about). I decided to look into a different school since they had an option for parent/toddler classes I thought would work before for my cling on. WRONG ! so so WRONG! They were so corporate, so strict, didn't listen to me when I begged them not to put my almost swimming daughter in the same class as a 4m old, wouldn't call me back, would pass me person to person on the phone just trying to get my daughter into the right level. At that point, I said it's time to check back with Maki's. They got my daughter right back on the schedule and at this time, the other girls were getting signed up. Back to group lessons we went! Thank goodness I made that decision. The other thing I love, the coach pushes my daughter who is very comfortable compared to a typical 2 year old. I'm okay with it and coach knows it which is why she is excelling so fast! But coach will also scale back if needed! The now 8 almost 6 and 3, the girls are doing tremendous. This swim school is amazing. They will be moving soon, but I know that's convenient for some. I take the little girl I nanny for (she's four) here once a week on Fridays for her semi-private swim lesson. She gets rather nervous, and it didn't seem to get much better while she was taking lessons at AVAC. Since she has switched to this swim school it's been a complete turn around. She is almost swimming on her own, when just a few weeks ago she didn't really want to get her face in the water. Tiffany is a wonderful instructor. She is firm, yet supportive of the kids. When a child says they don't want to do something, she is encouraging and assertive and gets them to do it anyway. The children seem less frightened when she lets them know, "I will not let go unless I tell you first." She gets the kids to listen, behave, and SWIM! After each lesson, if the child has behaved they receive one gold (plastic) coin. After they get 5 coins they can pick a prize out of the treasure box. This seems to be the most exciting and rewarding part because the children know...as a result of swimming, they get a prize. It also teaches delayed gratification, which I am a big fan of. I like the small feel of this place (they have one pool!) and am a little nervous to see how the new pool is once they move. I remember not enjoying AVAC because you couldn't sit next to the pool, but had to sit behind a glass wall and watch the kids from there. I love the teaching methods used here, and can't wait to see what else this four year old can do! They also offer classes for older children, but I would call to double check ages. There was a misunderstanding during the signup so I had to contact the school 3 times. I had my heart set on Maki because they were close and had good reviews ( for a good reason too!) I went to the fish class with my little girl early. Sandie showed us around, and since we were early, she gave me instructions on how to do a back float with the baby. Autumn actually kicked some and floated on her back before the lessons started. When the lesson did start, autumn had a lot of fun. Some exercises were new so a little frightening (dipping her nose and mouth under water), but I am excited about seeing her progress through the weeks. I found the lessons very helpful for getting baby accustomed to the water. I signed up for 10 consecutive lessons (200$). There is a one time 50$ pool membership and registration fee. You also need to sign a waiver saying you won't sue them if anyone gets hurt. They have a nice children's changing room and two changing stations for babies. Since the pool is covered by a tent, it's shaded, so babies cannot get burned. You do need a nondisposable diaper for your baby at this pool. They do not want your baby only wearing disposable diapers. They sell it on location, but I bought mine ahead of time on Amazon. Applecheeks (brand) is great bc although nondisposable it snaps at the sides like a disposable diaper, so it's easier if your baby does go poopie. I highly recommend the fish lessons. Huh. So for reasons unclear my original review of this place fell victim to Yelp's curious filter. Anyways, in a nutshell my two young kids learned to swim quite quickly here. They've had a couple different teachers - we thought it would be nice to give them a change of style every once in a while. Highly recommended. Hopefully this review won't get filtered again. We used to be fans. The way management operates this business is absolutely unacceptable and should and will be reported. First, the facility is old and small. The pool water is merky and we have seen floating snot in the pool one too many times. Disgusting. The teachers are really their only saving grace. Most of them are nice but they charge over $20 per 15 minute session. Our biggest pet peeve is that this establishment allows their patrons to park in their designated handicap spot with out a placard and in the loading zone as their parking lot is extremely small. My husband is disabled and when we brought our son to class, many times we found two cars in handicap spot with out placards. We brought this up with the admin and she said "oh yea we allow them to park there" first time we didn't make a big deal bc we had found a close enough spot for my husband to walk. The 2nd and 3rd time it cause tension between us and other guests because other guests feel entitled to that spot. No regard for the rules the state of California has regarding those spots. After our sessions had ended, we reluctantly decided to continue because our son liked the teacher. We got a call soon from Maggie after we decided to continue. She said, that teacher wasn't continuing with the company and our slot was being given away to other members returning from summer break. Absolutely ridiculous. I again brought up the parking situation and they told us they would block off the spot with cones next time we came. What!?! That would never be necessary if they didn't let people park there that didn't have the proper placard. Not only that you are now singling out my husband and highlighting his disability. Maggie had the nerve to ask what the nature of his disability was!? None of your business! You can't ask someone that. That's totally inappropriate. Bottom line, we have never received a call with class openings as promised and it's been two months. We will never be back and will certainly NEVER recommend this business to anyone. We chose Maki for the end of the year party for my daughter's AHG troop. It was the PERFECT location for our teens! The *leaders* appreciated the clean facility, the unbeatable indoor/outdoor ambience, and the efficient communication with the management. The *girls* all appreciated the great sound system that kept their playlist playing (so fun!), the warm water and changing rooms, and the manageable depth of the pool-- which allowed for everyone to feel comfortable playing games! All around fantastic experience. Thank you, Maki for making this a wonderful finish to our year! read more

Amazing swim school! Maggie taught both of my boys to swim when they were younger and now they are phenomenal swimmers. She teaches a water babies classes for moms/dads and babies. Its never too early to start. Conveniently located in Campbell on Bascom Ave. Go check them out. read more
