We came, we saw, we conquered! After years of seeing friends post their pictures from the challenge, I finally caved in. My coworkers and I decided to sign up for this year's (2017) challenge. Free beer? Why not? YOLO. We were lucky to sign up when the early bird special opened. The whole process was simple... from sign ups, pick ups, and even the day of the challenge. We decided to carpool because of the distance from where we live because how it was priced $10 per car. Note to self purchase parking prior, if not then you'll need to pay $20 day of. So did we train? Not really. Just the typical weekly workouts at the gym. However I recommend being in some type of shape prior to the challenge.
On the day of the challenge we went a couple of hours early before our heat because we didn't know about the parking situation. When we arrived, there were many people who were going in and out. Luckily, it's one way in and another way, which alleviates traffic. Yay! From the parking, it was about a 5 minute walk to the area. There was a small beer garden which had beer vendors, food trucks, and more. There was also water tanks for washing off, water for drinking, coconut water station, and a volunteer station. The challenge was full of different obstacles such as a BIG slip and slide, a mud pool, and more. Each challenge was fun and if you didn't want to do one of the obstacles, then there are no penalties. Also you get DIRTY so don't wear new shoes or new clothes unless you want them to be covered in mud. A lot of people were wearing costumes, which makes it a whole lot of fun! Good thing we decided to dress up as well.
My coworkers and I loved the challenge. It was full of laughs, groans, and MUD! I think the only part that was a challenge was running up those hills. Ugh. But on the bright side, halfway of the challenge, there is a water spot which makes it helpful. After the race, we were literally drenched in mud. Yup... Luckily there were multiple tanks and water hoses to wash off. There is no way you can leave with out washing unless you want to ruin your car. After washing up, we decided to check out the concert and redeem our one free beer. Hands down best performer of the day was Braddah Walter. Yes the man who sang, Sweet Lady of Waiahole! Chee~ It was so fun!
So was it worth it? Of course! It was a great experience! And an excuse to get dirty and not get yelled at. We agreed this was something our whole office should sign up for as a team bonding experience. A lot of groups from families to working places were dressed up. It's not only local but it's also way cheaper than some of the other races that are held at the same location. Makahiki Challenge, checked! read more
