READY TO RUN 13.1 MILES OF ALOHA!!!
Ryan E.

Flew in from San Diego, I've chased this dream for 5 years and after finally fulfilling this dream by participating at this amazing half marathon event, this is now my all-time favorite half marathon course and running event ever. I just love the course from running through the amazing, astonishing and beautiful Downtown Honolulu, Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head State Park (even though it was challenging but definitely worth it) overviewing the Pacific Ocean. This is the most fun run I participated due to the atmosphere of other participants from local to other parts of the United States and other countries, the volunteers and the coordinators, especially the post-race party. As much as I love the half marathon courses in San Diego, it will never be as beautiful and prestigious as this course. Just a friendly reminder, if anyone plans to participate this half marathon in the future, please don't forget to always hydrate and use sunscreen, due to the weather forecast that it can be hot and humid (fortunately, it wasn't as hot and humid as I predicted and felt the breeze almost throughout the course). I will definitely return in the near future to participate running this amazing, prestigious, fun and memorable half marathon again! I crossed this off my bucket list! Mahalo and Thank you for making this memorable a HUGE COMEBACK and MAKING MY DREAMS COME TRUE!!!

Thank you so much to the volunteers especially the ones at the last three medical/water stations. The last medical and water station at Diamond Head's "Heartbreak Hill" gave me and my running buddy, Rema ice packs and water but offered bandages and vaseline for blisters too. They told us that the race staff wanted to close down their station but they advocated for us slow runners to stay open for us and I am truly grateful for them. The second to the last aid station actually had a nurse that I used to work with as volunteer in the hospital, Phil; he was great to see but I was too busy trying to get bandages for my blisters and finishing the race to catch up with him. I appreciate all the volunteers at the water and aid stations especially those staying open for the slow and last few runners of the half marathon race. Thank you to the race staff for having malasadas and bananas at the finish line for us and I got the last Lanikai Juice cold pressed drink because they handed the rest to the volunteers before the last few runners got to the finish line. Thank you for having the self serve water station at the finish line open as well as the main medical tent. They also ran out of moon pies and Mauna Loa Macadamia Nuts at the finish line. HPD moved everyone onto the sidewalk three hours in the race when most walkers and slow runners were in Waikiki at the moment making it harder and slower to continue on the race due to the crowds on the sidewalks, waiting for stop lights and watching out for cars on smaller two line roads. The HPD vehicle annouced to everyone to move to the sidewalk as roads reopened. The roads were supposed to be closed along the race route until 11 am or 12 pm but they started reopening roads at 9 am. I didn't appreciate the roads being reopened earlier than the permit and signs stated nor the early closures of water stations along the way. We had to figure out the race route along the way, I memorized most of it but looked up the route from the website to make sure we were going in the right direction along the route near and around Diamond Head to the finish line. From Monsarrat Ave to getting up and down Diamond Head Road on "Heartbreak Hill" was kind of dangerous at times with unpaved sidewalks, switching between different sides of the street and little water stations along the way as they all shut down after reaching Waikiki. They only had three aid stations still open around Diamond Head: one Gatorade station still open, one aid station near by KCC and one combined water and aid station at the last 2 miles of "Heartbreak Hill" after all the aid stations from Downtown to Waikiki. At least this course only had one huge hill, compared to the Honolulu Marathon with "Heartbreak Hill" and all the Kahala Hills (there's about 4 or 5 hills there) and you have to do it twice to get to Hawaii Kai and back in the marathon. I would like if this race started at the same time as the Honolulu Marathon and Start to Park 10k at 5 am instead of 6 am, so we could all get less hours in the sun and finish before it gets too hot and humid. I also would like that they didn't open up the roads so soon, it made the slow runners and walkers feel like second class people and inadequate compared to the fast runners that already finished the half marathon at that time. The packet pickup was easy and pretty good sized Hawaii Convention Center Ballroom with bib numbers laid out, help desk, bib chip check and clothing drop bags. They had a few vendors from their official race merchandise, Hawaii running lab, Lilikoi Wear, Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club, Phiten, Blondi Band, Oakley Sunglasses, and Hidow. I only brought a backpack, two hats: one for me and another for a friend at the official race merchandise store and got a muscle FDA approved massager at Hidow to help with the post race recovery and any muscle tension I have build up normally in my neck and shoulders. Overall, it was a good and fun race thank goodness for Rema, we helped each other a lot along the way of the race with salt tabs, Nunn and Advil/Tylenol. I didn't mind that she slowed me down since I was able to keep a consistent pace but she was in pain and needed to rest. It gave me time to massage my tightening thighs and to think of taking breaks when cramping because we both needed OTC pain meds near the end. I would do this half marathon again especially with my race buddy, Rema! Thank you so much to the volunteers, race staff and HPD! Thank you to all the people who helped set up, break down and coordinate this race! Thank you to Rema for being a wonderful person and race buddy!

I am not a runner. I hate running. I like to exercise, but always at a gym. I just don't like to RUN. This review is through the eyes of a brand new runner with no prior race experience. I have nothing to compare this race to, because this was my first race. SHORT VERSION Very well organized. Nice route, lots of road closures and porta potties on the course. Aid stations every 2 miles or so. Very nice tshirt and medal. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped set up, fill the drink stations, first aid stations, and to the organizers for putting on this event. LONG VERSION The Hapalua is the half marathon race put on by the Honolulu Marathon in April. (I've been told HAPA means portion and LUA is short for elua, the number 2 in Hawaiian...so two portions=half(?)) The 13.1 mile course starts in Waikiki, runs through Chinatown and back through Waikiki, up Monsarrat and around Diamond ahead to finish at Kapiolani park. They have checkpoints at the 5k 10k 15k markers and not the mile markers which is confusing to me and hard to explain to my kids how to track my progress because I only know my pace per mile, not in km. I guess if you run a lot, you know your 5k pace (!?) but I don't. Nowhere else in the USA do we measure things by kilometers, why do they do that? Maybe you elite runners can explain that one to me. REGISTRATION: The earlier you register, the cheaper it is. Over 7000 people registered for the 2016 race. You should register early or look for an online coupon code for discounts. This race is expensive but you get what you pay for, and this race had everything you need (water, Gatorade, satohap, gel, first aid, and potties...I heard there is a cheaper half marathon here but they don't have porta potties). PACKET PICKUP: This year it was at the Convention center, $10 for parking(!!), and coincided with Kawaii Kon, some crazy anime event. The pickup was pretty well organized but much smaller than I expected and they gave out the Tshirts with the packet pickup so you didn't have to go back after the race. THE CHASE: the race within the race. Team Hawaii is a group of the fastest runners in Hawaii. They were given a head start (each had different handicaps, but around 20 min before the start time, the first group left the start line), and were being chased by these Kenyan world record holders, who started just a few minutes before the rest of us. It was cool to see them coming back in as I was just heading out. Blink and you'll miss them. They are fast. THE RACE: mostly flat for the first 9 miles. And then this hill creeps up on you for the next mile. and then it's pretty much all flat except for another little minor hill. I trained for 4 months for this race. Thanks to fellow yelper Chad O for making me run when I didn't feel like running. We ran Monsaratt hills around Diamond Head on a regular basis. I also do strength training and yoga and I felt okay when I crossed the finish line and got rewarded with the best Pieology pizza waiting for me from Kyle H (I was the only Pieology award recipient, thanks to great friends!)...but then I couldn't walk down the steps at work for four days after the race because my knees hurt like hell and I told myself I would never ever do another race again.

The Hapalua Half Marathon... Besides some much-needed R&R, an inviting trip to the North Shore's Banzai Pipeline, and some of the best shrimp I've ever had at the North Shore Shrimp Truck, running Hapalua's Half and knocking out one more state run in my chase to complete 50 is why we've come to Oahu. Thankfully starting early at 6am (the humidity had already begun to set in), the Hapalua welcomed over 9000 runners, laced-up and sun-screened, to Duke Kahanamoku's statue in beautiful Waikiki. Traditional Hawaiian blessings and starting line ceremonies proceeded what would amount to be a fast-paced course throughout downtown Honolulu before heading up and up and up Monsarrat Ave. toward, and then completely around, Diamond Head. It seems a bit odd to say this, but, although I love going to Hawaii--as scenic and as beautiful as it is--I felt that Hapalua's course left a bit to be desired. For me, running around Diamond Head and hopefully meandering along the cone was a huge draw. However, the course simply follows the street at the vocanoe's base, where regular traffic streams. Yet again, even though Hawaii is stunningly beautiful (moreso the North Shore than Waikiki, in my opinion), the run itself didn't offer any more than what you'd find on a drive or walk through the city; and if you're staying around Waikiki, you've already done that. How selfish am I, right? I loved Hapalua, but I still wanted more.

So excited!

Fate loves the fearless. I finished this race in 6,474 place and I'm THRILLED about it. Haha, this was probably the hardest thing I've ever done in my life because the last 4 miles are in direct sun and it is brutal. They reported that 9,000 were starting and 6,526 finished. Congratulations to everyone that finished, we definitely earned our race bling. It's no secret I've struggled with running since my brain surgery. However, I will not be defeated. I am unbreakable. I struggle with getting dehydrated constantly while running and staying cool. I am giving this race 4 stars because I felt like it needed more hydration stations. Some were out of gatorade. I wasted some time because my husband had to bring me water. By the time I reached mile 11, my feet were cramping so badly I couldn't stand so I had to take about 30 minute break. All in all, it was a great race. I would definitely do it again. The medal was so beautiful, it's the prettiest I've ever seen. Thank you Hapalua for always encouraging everyone of all levels to participate in this race.

Crossed that finish line..wooohoo

This is my first Hapalua half marathon run. I've been attending the Honolulu Marathon but did not come across this run. There were more than 9k of people attending this run compared to the Honolulu Marathon, which was over 30k. Although this is just a half marathon, the route was out of the norm from all the other types of races. The run through downtown and waikiki was amazing, all filled with supporters clapping for us and it just makes you feel good. The weather this morning was amazing, their were some parts that were cloudy so you won't feel the heat of that sun. But when the sun hits, that heat makes you want to melt and forces you to run even slower. My Fiancée really loves to run, and I have her support even if she always beats me at all the runs we have been to. It's soo much fun, running with a big group makes it even more fun. Made it to the finish line at 3:06, I think i could do better. The Monsorat Street hill killed me. I had to walk/jog the last 3miles. For the people who want to do this, do it! You will have an epic time, physically and mentally.

This was one of the most well-organized running events I've participated in in Hawaii. For a relatively small race (about 4500 participants) in comparison to the Marathon and GAR, I was surprised at how much of the course roads they were able to get permitted to close, which made the running paths graciously wide and for the majority of the race, I felt un-crowded and very comfortable! What a pleasant surprise! For the most part, the route was easy and flat. The most difficult part of this race was heading up Monsarrat at mile 9 (unfortunately this year with headwinds blowing you in the face). No worries though because right after you tackle this long gradual hill you get the luxury of a slight downhill to prepare your legs for the last little climb and steep decline back to Kapiolani Park. At the finish, you are given a medal, water, banana and of all things...a malasada. Healthy recovery food :P

This is one of my favorite Half Marathons in Hawaii. It's unique! It is also the most unique out of everyone that I have ever ran. What makes Hapalua a cool run is the chase. I've never participated in the chase, but I'm sure if I would've stayed in Hawaii I could've made the team. The chase puts Hawaii's elite runners against some of the worlds elite, and it's very cool to see the build up. Prior to the chase; these elite runners do a short run with the local Hawaii runners; giving them the chance to see that their normal, which is pretty cool : ) One more last thing that I like about Hapalua Half Marathon, is it's a different course; compared to the many other half's that are ran in Honolulu. This course runs in Honolulu; starting at Waikiki, and taking you through Chinatown to Diamond Head, and finish at Kapiolani Park. It's a super cool Half Marathon, with a super cool finishers medal. : ) Enjoy!

Hapalua... Thank you for all the support from everyone and it was great seeing some inspiring people before the race. Thank you for the good luck messages too. A little after the second mile, some of the fastest runners were on their way back already and I was like wth. At mile 4, I started to cry thinking I couldn't do this. By mile 8 I wanted to run across to the people on the other side who were almost done. And at mile 10 I wanted to give up because of the rain, wind, exhaustion, darn Monsarrat but I pushed my limits and didn't finish as strong as I'd like but I did what I could. This is my first half marathon. My goal of 3 hours was reasonable for 13.1 miles. I finished at 2:58:23. Would I do it again? Yes, I would. The scenery is beautiful to run and see. I want to live a healthy life and push myself to always to do better. I didn't think I could be a runner and people even put me down and told me to give up, it's not for me. But I persevered. I may not be the best but I did it and gave it my all. And now I'll get off my soapbox. ^^*

This race is by far my favorite Hawai'i half marathon race! I ran this event 3xs now, and it has grown so much over the past couple years (participation and the organization itself). There are so many great features about this event that makes it special and unique. One of the features of this half marathon include The Hapalua Chase. In the Hapalua Chase, the best local runners from Hawaii get a head start on some of the best professionals runners in the world. The pros will chase down the local guys and girls to the finish line to claim the grand prize. It's just an exciting feature that the Hapalua included and it's fun cheering on Team Hawai'i when you see them running back. And of course you gotta cheer for the pros when they're inching in on Team Hawai'i lol. Another great feature to this race are the fundraising teams. Anyone can form a team, pick a cause and raise money for it. Every team member that contributes to the minimum donation will receive a discounted price to their Hapalua registration fee. It's just a great way to give back to the community while promoting health and an active lifestyle. After you register, the organization will send out an email notifying you on the expo info. The expo is usually at the Convention Center and as the event gets more popular every year, the bigger the room they're in. It's a smooth transition from picking up your packet and number, along with a great participation of other venders that attend the expo. Being apart of this race, you also get a dri-fit race shirt and reusable bag! The race course is great! Start line is in front of the Duke Kahanamoku statue on Kalakaua. You run along the Ala Moana Blvd and head into downtown area where you loop around and head back into Waikiki, up Monsarrat, around Diamond Head and finish at Kapiolani Park. Everything from the course markers, to the volunteers at the water aid stations, and to the police officers directing traffic were so well-organized. At the finish line, you receive your medal and then enter into finishers' town where you can get your shave ice, malasadas, banana, and refreshments, along with other tents that offer free massages and some other free stuff. If you're looking for a half marathon to run, then look no more. The Hawaii Hapalua race is a great event to be apart of :)

This year, I decided to participate in my very first half marathon..... and I'm so glad I did!!! I signed up for the Hapalua in January, so entry cost was ~$125. A bit pricey, but if you planned ahead and signed up early, it's about $30 for entry fees (early entries also get an in-training shirt). With any sign up includes entry to the race, an official Hapalua shirt, and medal (once you complete). The Hapalua is a 13.1 mile course that starts from the Duke Kahanamoku statue in Waikiki, then travels through Waikiki and Ward, and then snakes around downtown to make your return to Waikiki, and last you face the daunting Monsarrat Ave. hill. A few days before the race, The Hapalua holds a packet pickup event (this year's was at The Convention Center). Surprisingly, the packet pickup event was REALLY organized and the process was quick. Remember to bring your credit card though... there's lots of Hapalua memorabilia for purchase at this event. The actual race begins at 6AM, and consists of water/Gatorade stations about every 2 miles. When you finish your journey, you're awarded your Hapalua medal, malasadas, shave ice, fruits, and entertainment at Kapiolani Park. Loved this gathering, as my mother was super supportive and met me at the finish line.. we were able to enjoy all the festivities at Kapiolani Park. This year's Hapalua medals were extra fancy; the medals were spinning 3D circles that once laid flat, showed a woman on one side and a man on the other. Once I got home, I took a closer look at my medal, and realized that the center circle was installed reverse, so that no matter how I rearrange the circles the images would never match. Disappointed, I reached out to the organizers of The Hapalua... and amazingly! I received a response within an hour! The Hapalua rep expressed his apology and agreed to mail me a corrected medal. Absolutely amazed by the organization and all the workers/volunteers of The Hapalua... definitely signing up again next year! TIPS: - early registration pays off - race begins at 6AM, so train accordingly - eat a light breakfast prior and stay hydrated - getting dropped off/taking a cab/bus to the race is ideal - contact Hapalua staff of any concerns (very responsive) - go out and just have fun!

This was a 5k night run at Kualoa Ranch. Some people (probably because they didn't read the…read moreinstructions didn't register) didn't get a headlight. If you didn't have a light, it probably was a little more challenging as this was at night, hence the name "Nite Run." Right from the start one of our friends got injured as she didn't see the cattle guard and her foot went through the metal bars making a huge bump on her shin. What was messed up was that the other cattle guards were coned off to avoid them and to go around but not the first one. I felt bad for her but when she said she was going to suck it up and still do it I kicked some dirt on her and said see you at the finish line. I'm joking, I just kicked some dirt on her. Like I said the run was a 5k. It was for the most part on a dirt roadway. There was a pretty steep part that kind of kicked my butt. I thought I was going up Koko Head for a minute. Argh, Kill me now! lol They said there were supposed to be some kind of brain test or something as well as strength test which they had. I believe they went over the question and what the correct answer was supposed to be but what looked like a place they might have had someone asking you a question, there was no one, no one anywhere which was a little disappointing. Maybe next time they will have something. Another thing that was disappointing was that you didn't have to do the strength test and made it optional. One was you had to grab a sandbag (maybe around 10lbs) and carry it and go under a couple of beams. Next one was walking on rope (around 20'). It did get bottle necked as some people took forever to cross and when some fell they ran back and tried again. The wait time was around 12 minutes or so. They had at least 5 different lines. They also had another type of obstacle course... If you remember the movie Pretty Woman when they were on the Polo Field and the announcer says to "avoid the Steaming Divot." That's right, there were horse manure here and there that you had to hopscotch around. As most know Jurassic Park was filmed there and one part of the course you could hear dinosaurs in the background. Just thought that was cool of them. Maybe if one came out I would of ran faster. I heard that they ran out of some headlamps and t-shirts but was able to get more by the time people finished. Water stations were around the course. Free water, gatorade. At the end they brought out some free desserts. Had a couple of food vendors, music, Mc, and acrobatic act. Pretty fun event, especially when doing it with cool people.

Recently did the "Nite Run" at Kualua Ranch. I have to say, I LOVED it! It was not only fun (at…read morenight! Headlamps! Costume contest! Obstacles! Cows mooing LOL!) BUT it was pretty tough!! After doing the Glow Hawaii Run the night before (easy, shorter than advertised) it was nice to be able to really push myself and race. The trail was mostly dirt road but there were areas that were gravel road, grassy areas, etc. Started up a hill, did an obstacle, more killer hill, followed by another hill. Didn't expect that! Race was also longer than a 5k, didn't expect that either LOL! ;) There were a few cow patties and cattle gates so just trying not to break an ankle kept me really paying attention to where my feet were LOL. The whole set up was great. Great food venders, plenty of potties, easy packet pickup and we parked pretty close to the race area so heading back to the car was easy if you needed to put stuff away. NO FEE for parking. Loved that too. So many races make you park far away, pay for parking, pay to "store" your stuff they give you at the race, etc. I loved that I didn't feel nickel and dimed for this event. I purchased it as a Living Social deal and it was easy-peasy to get my tshirt, headlamp and number. LOVED that we were all chipped, gave me more incentive to run and try to get a decent time. They did run out of headlamps w/batteries (LOL) but we got there early so we got ones w/batteries. I'd definitely do this race again. I can't wait until they plan another one!!

One stretch along diamond head that showed the beach, one inland 4. Aid station volunteers were helpful 5. Times race with early enough time before it got hot and humid (5:30 start) for half 6. Plenty of police to guide the route and stop cars and even an escort at the head 7. A tiny metal turtle luck charm 8. Orange slices and pocari sweat at the finish 9. Big cheers at the sprint finish! Cons: 1. Mostly through residential streets so not much to see in terms of scenery. Quite a boring course. A trail half here would be awesome. 3. No snacks at aid stations 4. Quiet race. No music at the start at the park and minimal support throughout race but quite zen so it's fine 5. Thin race shirt worse quality than 3 dollar swap meet. Just super thin cotton with white print. No thought into design. 6. Basic print medal usually reserved for low end races that cost 35 bucks in Cali. The medals looking at from 10 years ago looked best with an actual flower shape and well designed. It'd have been much better to do one thing well, like a good medal, than to do many of the other things poorly, crap shirt, crap medal, crap stations, crap mc. 7. There really wasn't an expo as only one local run shop showed up, the run lab and some old swag from previous races for sale. I'd much prefer a trail race through the mountains inland with views at the top. This one needed a much better course. This one had 400 feet of vert but a really flat vibe

Maybe they should have different bib colors? Or even some commentating? The lady had no music, barely said anything to acknowledge the finishers and after finishers, the park was underwhelming. People got Gatorade or water and then went home. It was so silent, no music or much going on.. Also, that event lady said very little for like 40 min and then emphasized that only racers eat the snacks and throw your trash in the trash cans. That was it. I think she's raking in the money at over 100 dollars per racer at about 1,000 running it, it's a racket. Unorganized and yellow shirts about being mean and now I know why. She does three of these events. You'd think by now she would have it dialed in.

Then again, with my extensive marathon resume and my curiosity for adventure and just for something to do on a Sunday, I signed up for this race in mid October not knowing what to really expect. At least it was a half marathon I told myself. 13.1 miles of rugged terrain in the lush valleys of Kualoa Ranch on the island of Oahu, a place where I haven't ever been, except passing by on Kamehameha Hwy on the way north to Laie and Polynesian Cultural Center. It was the first time running this race and my first trail experience in Hawaii. After tackling a 50K trail in Colorado in September (Bear Chase 50K in Lakewood, CO), I kind of knew what I was getting into. Well, not so much after all, it seemed. Maybe I probably should have known better, but surprises were out there for us all on the course. I didn't want to pay $25 for the private shuttle that the race provided, which was basically a rented yellow school bus. They shuttled runners from Waikiki to the race start at the backside of Kualoa Ranch. I got here by city bus, which is really affordable if you just plan ahead. The Xterra World Championship boasts the 21K / Half Marathon as its marquee event, attracting some of the most finest trail runner elites from all parts of the country. They also have a 10K, 5K, and an adventure walk that attracts anyone and everyone to Kualoa Ranch for an epic Sunday. Race registration hovers from $40-$55, so if you want the challenge, might as well register early. I held out and had to pony up for the later fee. It's bittersweet that I have signed up for this race, since the course was just as brutal as the majestic scenery that was the Koolau Mountains that surrounded Kualoa Ranch. It was great that I can notch another half marathon to my list of races, but at the cost of having virtually no trail experience whatsoever and my body and legs are telling me so. The course was basically mostly uphill and the first mile ascended like a bat out of hell and it didn't really flatten out till those grassy downhills at mile 2. There were some reprieve in the course where it kinda did flatten to moderate downhill, which was miles 5-7, but that was it. We climbed back up at mile 8 and snaked through the back of Kualoa Ranch. The biggest surprise was the massive hill at mile 10 and the rugged tippy toe über crazy down hill that you could not even really run, due to it being so crazy you may fall and roll off into the ravine. This part scared me, but I managed to get down one way or another and those ropes helped a lot! It helps also that Xterra allows everyone in, not just elites, so I could have help on the course, if I needed it. The last. 2.5 miles snaked around miles 3-5 of the course and it was a soft downhill to the finish line. Never in my life that I experienced something so powerful and epic that I would consider something like that next year. Maybe maybe not. Thanks to Xterra for keeping the finish line open for the last finisher. Met new friends and 2 yelpers that morning too. It was awesome to see Yelper Zar N. running the 10K and meeting Yelper Chris P. from Kapolei. Big thanks to Chris P. and her husband whom gave me a ride back to UH from Kualoa Ranch that afternoon. I thought of DNF when I came across that tiptoe section of mile 10-ish and I just wanted to cry. Knowing that I paid money for this made me realize that I can do this if I just break it all down and take each step one step at a time. The finish time didn't matter that day. What mattered was that I completed the course and survived. Run more! B+

Big props to the race organizers for making everything so easy, from picking up the packet in Waikiki to finding parking on the day of the race! My daughter wasn't happy about waking up so early to get to Kualoa Ranch, but once we got on the trail with the magnificent landscape and cool movie set locations, she was smiling from ear to ear. The Boneyard, with huge skeletons of a triceratops and ape skull, will definitely cut into your race times because you'll want to stop to take pictures! The 5k trail can be a little demanding on the uphill sections but those are few and far between - you'll have enough time to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery. I saw several racers with babies on their backs and little ones in tow, so you can definitely do this with kids. Highly recommend this race - great activity if you've got guests on island at the time!

They are always pushing there members to try there best and I love that, Helps me stay motivated. The scenery of the runs is unbeatable and are filled with tons of volunteers also willing to help you. It cost 5$ to enter the race which isn't too bad and if you are trained for it its a blast! Try to meet as many people as you can because for some strange reason people that run are always pretty successful in life!

I was headed to Hawaii for thanksgiving this year and what better way to start my eating marathon…read moreduring my stay then to run the turkey trot! The turkey trots are usually short races, and i'm glad to find that this one is 10 miles long, in the beautiful and scenic kapiolani park/ diamond head road. Participants are encouraged to arrive at the Kapiolani Park bandstand by 6:30 am to sign a waiver & to register. No you can't register on line. You simply just show up on race day! Sooooo hawaii, right? And even better, it only costs $3 to participate. The winner isn't necessarily the person who finishes the race first, it's the person that comes closest to their predicted time. You get a popsicle stick at the start of the race, where you write you "predicted time" of finishing the race, down to the second. When you cross the finish line, they'll time you, and write down your actual time. The whole purpose of the race is to train for a full marathon. Apparently the first 10 miles of a full marathon really helps set up the pace for the last 6 miles, so it's important to pace yourself so you don't burn out in the final miles. The downside of the race is you're not suppose to wear headphones (prevents cheating, ie the nike + that gives you your average pace, distance, etc & for safety reasons), and of course the hot weather. I mean you start the race at around 7:15ish after everyone is registered, but even so early in the am, the weather in hawaii is a lot warmer than in california, so make sure you stay hydrated and adapt to the weather if you aren't used to running in hotter climates. In addition, the race route is announced on race day, so that it gives everyone a fair chance. Overall, i thought the race was challenging enough. This years race at two steadily rising inclines, on diamond head road. The lack of sleep + hot climate made for a tough 10 miles. Not to mention there were only 3 water stops. So I would recommend to bring your own water unless you don't plan to drink much. The scenic view & lookout points that we ran across during the race was absolutely gorgeous. It was an amazing experience and I'd totally do it again. Congrats to the Marathon clinic for an awesome experience. Mahalo!

I'm a rooking when it comes to the triathlon world so I had no idea what to expect. But after picking up my packet, the contents inside had everything inside to help answer most if not all of my questions. It included racing tips, course maps, racing rules, a swim cap and a free jamba juice coupon. On race day, checking in was a breeze. The volunteers were all super helpful and did everything in a good mood...even though it was 430 in the morning. For the bike/run portion, cops were at every intersection halting traffic as racers came through. If it weren't for them, most of our times would have been screwed up...but this must be a normal thing for most triathlons as they are timed events. All in all, this was a wonderful event. I can't wait until next years as I hope to improve all of my times.

After completing the Kapilina NiteRun earlier this summer, I got emails about the Kailua NiteRun…read morehappening on October 10, 2015. Since I didn't want to pay to actually run the 5k, I decided to volunteer instead. I eagerly signed up to volunteer from 4pm to 9pm as a Family Fun Fair Attendant. As a volunteer, it was pretty unorganized. They didn't have any work available so they had us sit around for a substantial amount of time. I even asked if I could grab a bite nearby and come back! Even after being gone for more than 30 minutes, still no work. LOCATION/PARKING: The run was held at Kawainui Marsh (the closest address is 910 Kailua Road). They had tents set up for easy spotting! Parking available on the streets or at Kailua High School. Shuttle buses were available to bring runners to the start line from Kaiser High School. ACTIVITIES/VENDORS: This particular NiteRun does not have all the vendors and inflatables like Kaka'ako, Kapilina or Haleiwa! Many people were disappointed in this. However, DNLR does not allow much on their protected lands. They did however have Jamba Juice and Coca Cola, free smoothies/coffee/Powerade/coconut water/Honest Tea, etc. Informal costume contest at the end of the run! RACE INFO: If you're running no need to come really early but if you haven't already picked up your packet before race day, come a little earlier so you can put your packet away! They don't really hold anything for you! You receive a free headlamp with entry and some coupons for Sports Authority and Jamba Juice! Race length is 5k or 3.1 miles! Not officially timed (no timing chips). Run begins once it gets dark and often starts later than scheduled. :( On this particular route, be sure to have enough lights! You run along the marsh, partly on the pavement and a good amount of time on gravel! Since it wasn't busy, the volunteer coordinator let me run! Let me tell you, running on gravel with little to no light is worse than walking in heels! Wobble this way, wobble that way! Just be careful. People are running with costumes and everyone is soooo friendly! I kept pace with several guys and they were cheering everyone on! How do you talk and run at less than an 8 min mile pace! Gah I'm panting! And of course, I try to not sound like a gorilla so I'm breathing quietly as I pass people and as soon as I'm a good distance away, GASP FOR AIR PLEASE! Inhale like there's no tomorrow! SNACKS: Grab more Jamba Juice smoothies or Coca Cola products to replenish your energy stores after the run! Muffins, oranges, bananas, trail mix, and cookies were available also! Nom nom nom. Especially when you're panting because you're so out of shape that a 5k makes your squirm. PRICING: Entry fees are $39.50 for adults, $25.50 for children ages 10-17. Same day registration is $49.50. Save $10 if you are a student, military, or HGEA member! Look on Groupon for specials to save money too for individuals like me who are too old to be considered a child, is unfortunately a wannabe student, is to weak-minded to be in the military and I don't even know what HGEA is. Time to Google! RANDOM FACTS: Each NiteRun benefits a different organization. This particular run benefitted the Boy & Girls Club of Hawaii - Windward. Come to the next event, Haleiwa NiteRun, on December 19, 2015 at the Haleiwa Beach park! This one should have all the festivities! Any takers?! :D

5k fun run in dark, lit by glowsticks? Sign me up!…read more I couldn't make either packet pickup and arrived an hour ahead for late packet pickup. I was surprised to find no line, just walked right up, signed the waiver on an iPad, and had my bad and t-shirt within a couple of minutes. It was smooth, definitely something other events could replicate. I walked around the fair / market for a bit. Luckily, I had come early because traffic was looking like a mess. The start was a bit confusing though - everyone had naturally lined up at the starting gate, then we were moved towards the mauka side near the stage. I couldn't hear anything, then we all started walking back to where we were...then right out of the road! The course map then made sense - we walked across the street to another starting area, complete with an inflatable arch and tents. It was dark by the time we started, which was good. It kind of lost steam though. The first part of an event is usually energy charged and exciting, this one wasn't. A few people were commenting on this, but oh well. We were off! I heard about the Seattle night run and was expecting some strobes, flashing lights, or something. The course was mostly just a jog in the night, with an occasional halogen light. The aid station at the halfway point was nice though, plenty of volunteers, a band, lots of cold water. The cold water was welcome - and full bottles of water! Think that's the first time I've seen that at an aid station. Then, just the light jog back. I was expecting a small congregation, but most people just walked back. I'm guessing there were 200 people, mostly teens (fitting though, given all the proceeds went to the Boys and Girls Club). Was a cool idea and if they could find out a way to pump some more energy in it, might go again.

Yelp 365 Challenge #122/365…read more After the Great Aloha Run, I had the insane idea to sign up for another run...the 15th Annual Ford Island Bridge Run, which is only 6.2 miles. I figure I would train on the days that I don't attend TRX classes by running around my neighborhood. However, there are times when plans don't go according to your agenda especially for me. And I have that type of personality where it grates on my nerves and it will gnaw at me for days afterwards. For instance, the past three weeks-I haven't been up to par in health. In fact, my coughing is still here but not as bad as before. I've only returned to TRX classes last Thursday. So, for me to expect to do my best on race day...I was setting myself up to having too much of high expectations. Nevertheless, I still got up early plus I was using my running clothes--so all I had to do was put on my contacts, brush my hair, and brush my teeth. Drove to the stadium but the gates weren't open yet, so I drove to SackNSave to pick up bananas and water. Parked in the Aloha Stadium overflow parking lot and ate a banana (I should have ate more as well as whole wheat bread but I didn't). Drank some water and by 6:15, I decided to walk across to Richardson Field and waited with the rest of the runners/walkers to be instructed to line up at the start line. I stretched... Observed... Took pics of my shoes and surroundings... Waved hi to a few co-workers and silently prayed while reminding myself to pace myself. 7:00AM (It begins) Ran slowly on the bridge....first HILL (I HATE HILLS) Off the bridge and rounded the corner to the first mile marker and noticing in the far distance...the runners that were ELITE RUNNERS passing the four / five mile MARKER. And this is what happened... I allowed discouragement to set in...(bad thing for me to do) By the three mile marker...my stomach started burning because I burned up that LITTLE APPLE BANANA, which I had to slow my run down to where I decided to walk for my body to adjust. However, I was allowing myself to notice other people especially walkers pass by me. So, I started jogging really slow. This is when the sun came out from the clouds and blast me with its rays (good thing I had a bottle water). Another thing that slowed me down, (my fault!) was the fact that I was taking in all the historic building surroundings as well as making a note to go to Pacific Aviation to check out the planes! The water stations were at perfect intervals but it was luke warm water. However, thank you to the volunteers who were quickly handing out waters and cheering us on. As we rounded the last circle before heading back to the bridge, I noticed that some cars were impatient and attempting to drive in the midst of runners (boo!) Finally, the bridge loomed ahead and at first I was jog/walking behind other walkers before realizing that I am able to run around them. There were the camera people waiting to take pictures but um...NO, I was actually becoming grouchy because I swear...I hate hills. I had to run the hills on the bridge...then I had to run up the hill to round the corner to get to Richardson Field. I was not a happy person because I allowed discouragement to get the better of me. I was that irritated at everything, that I decided to sprint it just to get it over and done with. The finishing time on the clock was 1:43:36, however, official time was 1:43:00 (I made it under two hours, thank God). But, like a petulant child after accomplishing something, I just headed to the table that was offering water and gatorade. I grabbed my bottles and watched the awards ceremony. Megan Clark (my trainer) at SOHI Fitness placed THIRD for OVERALL WOMEN in this event. How cool is that? Plus, the trophies were koa wood (I think). There was some entertainment afterwards but I didn't stay. I chose to pick up my grandson and rest for the remainder of the day. Overall experience, it was a good run. It would have been a BETTER RUN if I did the following: 1) Eat a little more before the race 2) Understand that because I was just getting over being sick...my timing will be all right 3) Don't look ahead to see the elite runners and get discouraged because after all, I am running for me and no one else... 4) To remember to take my inhaler before stepping out of the car 5) TO HAVE FUN Will I do this one again next year? I think so.

After making the tredge back up&over the bridge, meadow gold trucks were waiting to pass out popsicles, milk, yogurt &cottage cheese. What a treat. I'd definitely do this run again.
