    Packet pick-up! Smooth process :)

If you're looking to do a challenging yet fun race, here are some things to inspire you to sign-up for the Hibiscus Half-Marathon / 15k / 5-miler that is held in May: -prices are reasonable -swag is amaaaazing (race t-shirt AND medal) ***they also have other race items on sale (visors, tank tops, hats, t-shirts, towels) -amazing views along the course and fantasizing of which house you want along Diamond Head and Kahala -post-race snacks (nutter butter, I love you) -Gatorade and water on the course -friendly and motivating volunteers cheering you along the way from the start line to the finish line -affiliated with Road Runners Club of America Championship Also, this race is part of the Tropical Triple Crown race series that also offers other races that are either trail or pavement. Do you love trail races? Do the cow race that is held in January. Love to get your jingle on? Sign up for the Holiday Hustle in December. Want to use a coconut bra and grass skirt? Sign up for the 8k Coconut race held at Neil Blaisdel Park in Pearl City. Want to celebrate life? Sign up for the 5k Mango Days that is held at Ala Moana Beach Park. Bonus for the medal junkie (like me): If you do three races (example: Hibiscus, Coconut and Mango)...you get a fourth medal! *swoon* As I write this, I just realized that I've done most of the races that Tropical Triple Crown race series offers and it is probably because it one of the most organized race events (from registering to race day) with great post-race food and fun staff along with the race medals, of course. So, sign-up, lace up and get your run (or walk) on! *cue "eye of the tiger" song*

It's always cool to have an option to either run a 5 miler, 15k or half marathon. Of course, only the crazies (like me) would voluntarily choose the half marathon route. Regardless on which distance you run, everyone gets a medal at the end. But the course has a time limit of 4 hours. It's highly recommended that participants that do 17min/mi to do the 15k instead of the half marathon as they open up the roads at 9:30am. I ran this race last year, but really contemplated on doing it this year because compared to other races, this event was a little unorganized and disjointed. This year (2015) was their 9th year for this event and sad to say, but I still felt the same way I felt from the previous year of running this race. The packet pick-ups are held on 3 days at 3 different places for about 3-6hrs: Kalapawai Cafe in Kailua, Runners Route in town, and Runners HI in Aiea. There's no expo for this race; it's more a get in, pick-up your bib and shirts, and then get out. Nothing too exciting really. The day of the race, I easily found parking on Kapahulu. It's a bit of a walk to the start line at Kapiolani Park, but at least I know I won't get stuck trying to get out when I finish the race. The race was supposed to start at 5:30am, but I'm not sure what happened as it started couple minutes late. Plus, it was a tad bit weird that they didn't actually have a real person singing the national anthem; it was a recording off someone's phone (not to mention, their phone started ringing in the middle of the song)...and it was even more weird "Hawai'i Pono'I" didn't follow right after the national anthem. The route from Kapiolani Park, around Diamond Head, up to Hawai'i Kai, back to Kapiolani Park were nicely marked with cones and was a beautiful view. It was greatly appreciated to have the police directing traffic as the runners made their way around the course. But I have to say, at the very beginning of the race, it's never wise to narrow the running lane as that's when everyone is together and being bunched up like that can be very dangerous and also alter people's times as they're either slowing down to let people go and running faster so they don't run into other people. After running 13.1mi and crossing that finish line to get your medal, the first thing every runner wants is water. But for some reason, it took me awhile to find the water station! I managed to find the snack tent first, but I was dying of thirst. My mouth was really dry, so when I was eating my half of a banana, it didn't taste the same. When I finally found the water tent, there was a long line. And just when I got to the front of the line, there were a couple empty water jugs. Plus, the cups at the water station were the really small cups. I felt selfish when I jugged my first cup then got refills right after, but I was still really thirsty after that and I didn't want to stand back in line just to refill such a small cup! Plus, my feet were dying. After my thirst was clenched, I found the hill and finally got to lie down. There wasn't much post-race things to do there. And I found it weird to have a tent that sells shave ice. Who carries money with them at these types of events? Plus, why is this the first tent you pass by when crossing the finish line instead of the water tent??? Hopefully their 10th year will be a better experience...

okay so i'll be the first to give this event a 5 star review. my family came out to Honolulu to participate in this event and we had a great experience. the nice thing is that it is always the Sunday before Memorial Day every year making it good as part of our vacation plans. Packet pick-up was simple and everything was there. there is plenty of parking all along the course starting line and the course itself was very scenic. the finishers medal was very nice last year as well. they offer 3 distances ( 5 miles, 15K, or half marathon) and finishers of ALL distances get a medal. great family and fitness activity. easy registration via active.com. highly recommended! =D Aloha!

2015's Hibiscus Half Marathon, 15k and 5 Miler. I like the fact that they have 3 different road races. It was a bit confusing at first, we couldn't find the starting line and really didn't know the route for the 5 miler until we were running it. I did like that fact that everyone starts at the same time, so it's good to include family (kids) for the shorter 5 miler if your running the 15k or Half. We will def run this again next year. this year they added more porta-potties but the lines were still 5- 10 min waits pre-race. The course was clearly marked and the police were at every corner stopping traffic. I enjoyed the beautiful views and small hills along the route. The added bonus was that everyone got a finishers medal regardless of what distance you ran.

    My medal!!

The Hapalua - Hawaii's Half Marathon…read more I recommend this half marathon for beginners, intermediates, and even running pros because it's fun. This marathon is well organized and a big thank you to all the volunteers. The race starts at the Duke Kahanamoku Statue, heads past the Convention Center, and ends at Kapiolani Park (near the zoo). The course if fairly flat until you get to mile 10, which is uphill towards Diamond Head. I did this race with my wife and her family, which made the race even more special. Because the race was out and back, we're also able to see each other throughout the race. I had a "good for me" pace going until the one of the runners in front of me stopped and I literally ran her over. She was okay and was not injured, but still I felt bad. She wanted to wait for her husband, and I waited with her. I'm not going to lie; this was my excuse to take a breather. After exactly 8 minutes (felt like 20 minutes), we were both back to running. Everything was smooth until miles 10 to 12 when the course is mostly uphill. This was a beast and a lot of people, including me, walked it. I found myself walking majority of miles 11 to 13 and remember that runner I accidentally knocked over? Well, she ran past me on mile 11. Medals are earned and given immediately after the finish line. After the finish line is a cold shower, which I have never seen at a race before. Post race fuel includes malasada, moon pies, bananas, wafers, gels, and water. Huge plus! Overall, great race. I'd do it again.

The turkey trots are usually short races, and i'm glad to find that this one is 10 miles long, in the beautiful and scenic kapiolani park/ diamond head road. Participants are encouraged to arrive at the Kapiolani Park bandstand by 6:30 am to sign a waiver & to register. No you can't register on line. You simply just show up on race day! Sooooo hawaii, right? And even better, it only costs $3 to participate. The winner isn't necessarily the person who finishes the race first, it's the person that comes closest to their predicted time. You get a popsicle stick at the start of the race, where you write you "predicted time" of finishing the race, down to the second. When you cross the finish line, they'll time you, and write down your actual time. The whole purpose of the race is to train for a full marathon. Apparently the first 10 miles of a full marathon really helps set up the pace for the last 6 miles, so it's important to pace yourself so you don't burn out in the final miles. The downside of the race is you're not suppose to wear headphones (prevents cheating, ie the nike + that gives you your average pace, distance, etc & for safety reasons), and of course the hot weather. I mean you start the race at around 7:15ish after everyone is registered, but even so early in the am, the weather in hawaii is a lot warmer than in california, so make sure you stay hydrated and adapt to the weather if you aren't used to running in hotter climates. In addition, the race route is announced on race day, so that it gives everyone a fair chance. Overall, i thought the race was challenging enough. This years race at two steadily rising inclines, on diamond head road. The lack of sleep + hot climate made for a tough 10 miles. Not to mention there were only 3 water stops. So I would recommend to bring your own water unless you don't plan to drink much. The scenic view & lookout points that we ran across during the race was absolutely gorgeous. It was an amazing experience and I'd totally do it again. Congrats to the Marathon clinic for an awesome experience. Mahalo!

If you didn't have a light, it probably was a little more challenging as this was at night, hence the name "Nite Run." Right from the start one of our friends got injured as she didn't see the cattle guard and her foot went through the metal bars making a huge bump on her shin. What was messed up was that the other cattle guards were coned off to avoid them and to go around but not the first one. I felt bad for her but when she said she was going to suck it up and still do it I kicked some dirt on her and said see you at the finish line. I'm joking, I just kicked some dirt on her. Like I said the run was a 5k. It was for the most part on a dirt roadway. There was a pretty steep part that kind of kicked my butt. I thought I was going up Koko Head for a minute. Argh, Kill me now! lol They said there were supposed to be some kind of brain test or something as well as strength test which they had. I believe they went over the question and what the correct answer was supposed to be but what looked like a place they might have had someone asking you a question, there was no one, no one anywhere which was a little disappointing. Maybe next time they will have something. Another thing that was disappointing was that you didn't have to do the strength test and made it optional. One was you had to grab a sandbag (maybe around 10lbs) and carry it and go under a couple of beams. Next one was walking on rope (around 20'). It did get bottle necked as some people took forever to cross and when some fell they ran back and tried again. The wait time was around 12 minutes or so. They had at least 5 different lines. They also had another type of obstacle course... If you remember the movie Pretty Woman when they were on the Polo Field and the announcer says to "avoid the Steaming Divot." That's right, there were horse manure here and there that you had to hopscotch around. As most know Jurassic Park was filmed there and one part of the course you could hear dinosaurs in the background. Just thought that was cool of them. Maybe if one came out I would of ran faster. I heard that they ran out of some headlamps and t-shirts but was able to get more by the time people finished. Water stations were around the course. Free water, gatorade. At the end they brought out some free desserts. Had a couple of food vendors, music, Mc, and acrobatic act. Pretty fun event, especially when doing it with cool people.

Race was also longer than a 5k, didn't expect that either LOL! ;) There were a few cow patties and cattle gates so just trying not to break an ankle kept me really paying attention to where my feet were LOL. The whole set up was great. Great food venders, plenty of potties, easy packet pickup and we parked pretty close to the race area so heading back to the car was easy if you needed to put stuff away. NO FEE for parking. Loved that too. So many races make you park far away, pay for parking, pay to "store" your stuff they give you at the race, etc. I loved that I didn't feel nickel and dimed for this event. I purchased it as a Living Social deal and it was easy-peasy to get my tshirt, headlamp and number. LOVED that we were all chipped, gave me more incentive to run and try to get a decent time. They did run out of headlamps w/batteries (LOL) but we got there early so we got ones w/batteries. I'd definitely do this race again. I can't wait until they plan another one!!

They have a lot going on, but you are on your own to figure out what and when. That is probably my only criticism. They posted nothing online for 2014 (that I could find), so I didn't know what their entertainment lineup was or any other helpful information to plan. We took our chances and arrived around noon on Sunday. They also didn't seem to have any programs or any info onsite - we had to either ask someone or just wander around. That said, we found plenty of interesting things to see and do. One room of the pavilion is dedicated to booths and tables where you can learn more about Scotland, its people, and geography. If you have any Scottish heritage, you can learn a lot about your ancestors. Several clans are represented here, and they can give you loads of information. An inside stage was dedicated to Scottish dancing. We bypassed it to watch the bagpipes and drums on the outdoor stage. Meanwhile, there were vendors selling Celtic jewelry, artisanal preserves, woodcrafts, etc. Food vendors were also scattered around, including bar carts selling Scotch (of course!). By mid-afternoon, a lot of vendors had sold out of their wares. Meanwhile, outside on the lawn, men in kilts were competing in highland games. Caber tosses, throwing of all kinds of heavy things, heaving heavy things over bars - it's actually quite fascinating to watch! After the bagpipers left the stage inside the pavilion, the Housewife Games were announced - and any lady was invited to participate. Three events: frying pan toss and rolling pin toss (distance), and a haggis roll (accuracy). I turned to my festival companions and said "I have to go do that now" and went outside to register. It was free, and I got to fling things! About a dozen ladies joined me in the competition, and some were unexpectedly strong. Everyone was really friendly and chatty and cheered one another on. The gentlemen measuring our throws were really fun and good-natured. I had a blast! And came in as second-runner up, so I won a prize! I can't wait to return next year - I'm going to practice my throwing in the meantime and will be gunning for champion. :)
