On my child's first day I encountered unfathomable unprofessionalism by a TopKick staff member. My five year old was also left unattended near the building's primary entry and exit points. I reported these events to management and still have not received acknowledgement of my concerns or an apology. For the record generic platitudes in response to this now public review are grossly insufficient for what I've experienced. I sincerely hope TopKick reevaluates the manner in which it supervises children and communicates with families. My family and I expected care, understanding, and professionalism none of which were present in our interaction.

Lastly, having the ability to utilize positive language, ie. employees lack the use of positive & empathetic language, especially when dealing with difficult situations.

Seriously, this is the real deal - this school is probably the closest opportunity outside Okinawa you'll get to learning authentic traditional karate from a master practitioner as it was originally conceived by Kanbun Uechi back at the beginning of the 20th century. This style of karate is practical for both self defense and physical fitness, and promotes self-discipline and a healthy life style. Progressing through the various ranks is well structured and meaningful, and you absolutely get a sense of accomplishment as you do so. The staff at Okinawa Karate and Cultural Center make learning karate easy and fun, for all ages and abilities, with hands on classes at the Okinawa Karate and Cultural Center and at various Parktakes rec centers throughout Fairfax County. My whole family signed up for karate classes during the pandemic on a whim, but it only took just a few short classes to realize what a gem of an opportunity we have right here in northern Virginia. I cannot recommend it highly enough! Give it a try and join a great karate community!

I'm very pleased to see that he finally was able to open his own independent dojo to celebrate traditional Okinawan Uechi Ryu Karate, as well as the rich cultures that Okinawa brings. The Cultural Center has many artifacts in a museum style in a side room. There's also many people from the community like the DC Okinawan Kai who utilizes the space. It is a safe and welcoming space for not just Okinawan people, but those interested in learning more about the culture and tradition. This spacious dojo has two kicking/punching bags ready for training, many talented instructors, and classes for children and adult alike! I am excited for what's to come for this OKCC! I hope new students can find their new karate home like it's been for me throughout the years!

Coach Jason as well as his coaching staff are excellent at teaching school age children and challenging them to be their best. The class incorporates the right amount of structure, discipline, physical fitness, and fun. There is always a good number of coaches on the mats so that each child can receive additional personalized guidance. Students are evaluated individually and promoted accordingly you won't get an eleven-year black belt here everything is earned not given. In addition to the awesome training environment the coaches are amazing human beings. Battlefield Jiu Jitsu has fundraisers and donates to charitable causes. The annual Christmas party is something that all the students look forward to every year. Battlefield Jiu Jitsu personifies the essence of martial arts and it shows in the coaching staff all the way down to the lowest belt student. My 12-year-old son also trains here and loves it. He's an honors straight A+s student with maximum confidence thanks to our great instructors who mentor him like big brothers/fathers. I'm not a great fighter at all but muay thai is something I truly love. I look forward to it at the end of the day and see it as something that gives and rejuvenates me rather than taking away from me. Anyways, I came to TAG MT during a business trip and had known about this school already from watching TAG MT youtube instructional vids. I came early and got to see the kids class. It's a great balance of technical drills but also having lots of fun as the reward. The coaches are great and the kids look up to them, fully engaged and are adorable in their big Muay Thai shorts :P Head Instructor Kru Chris Aboy has an amazing personality and teaching style. His encyclopedic knowledge and teaching methodology is phenomenal. He can read each student individually while also making adjustments to the class as a whole depending on where everyone is at with the previous drill. You don't feel left behind at all. Coach James is amazing as well leading the partner drills and demos (for both Kids + Adults). In general, Phase 1 covers fundamental techniques including movement, defense, attacks, and counters through progressive partner drills. Coaches will demo technique, then go around reading students and providing helpful corrections and explaining the reasons why. Calistechnics and shadowboxing in-between rounds really push the conditioning. Controlled sparring drills towards the end adds just enough unpredictability yet retaining safety and technique. Phase 2 builds upon Phase 1 and adds in more advanced drills, focusing on more advanced strategies and technical sparring. For seasoned nak muay, TAG offers an in-depth knowledge and well rounded in all aspects. I really love their elbow/knee/clinch game. Nothing is watered down at all. I learned a LOT of new details to improve my technique is just one session. Most importantly, I felt taken care of and safe the entire time. If you live in the DC Metro Area and are interested in learning Muay Thai, whether it's for self-defense or competition, I strongly suggest checking out TAG Muay Thai. You will learn authentic, pure hard-hitting Muay Thai at TAG, along with the humility and respect of Traditional Muay Thai.

I did a ton of research on ways to strengthen my core, and Kung Fu repeatedly came up as a recommendation. Reviews like the ones here helped guide me to the Jow Ga Shaolin Institute. I was hesitant to take on Kung Fu as a middle aged adult. I had always considered martial arts as a younger person's sport and didn't want to be the older new guy in a sea of 12-15 year olds. My experiences at JGSI have totally eliminated that misconception. The classes are diverse in age and experience levels. The instructors are patient and adjust their teachings to the individual they're working with. The other students are warm, welcoming and extremely supportive. The classes themselves are challenging, but rewarding. They focus on concentration, stability, meditation, and strength with styles rooted in both traditional Northern and Southern forms. The school is well rounded and teaches multiple styles and solid technique, as well as real life applications of the forms. They also stay true to the culture of Kung Fu and support the history and tradition that has made this art form so great. It doesn't matter if you are looking for self-defense or exercise, discipline or focus, you can find each of those and more at the Jow Ga Shaolin Institute.
