My name is Jennifer Kropke and I was a student at Maine West from 2004 to 2008. For those four years I was on Poms and Orchesis. From state dance festivals to shows to representing Maine West as a dancer in Paris, France, I was extremely committed.
Dance was my passion, but it was also my outlet. I had a turbulent home life during my high school years and I didn't always make the best choices. I was looking for attention in a lot of the wrong places because, at the time, I didn't know I was trying to fulfill a lack of attention at home. There were plenty of teachers that are still on your payroll that either ignored the problems, or just wrote me off as a bratty kid. Lisa Jacob's did not.
Not only did she support me through a lot of troubles I had regulating my emotions, but she help me focus on school, my love for dance, and the positives in my life.
I also remember her as being fair. When I didn't show up for practice for one or another reasons I received the same punishment as someone else would have if they didn't show up, I lost spots in dances. She was tough on me when I needed it, but she also gave me kindness and support when I needed it to.
To hear that Lisa Jacobs is losing her position as the head of Orchesis is disturbing to me. Lisa Jacob's is the heart of the program. In my opinion, she is the heart of Maine West.
I am now 33 years old with two children. I went to college and studied Physical Education, Dance and Health. I've been teaching dance for over 10 years, first at various studios, and now own my own dance company. I work full-time as an early childhood educator, and also work full-time for a nonprofit organization called Say Yes To Childcare. I am thriving and truly believe I have Lisa Jacob's to thank for it. She has been my inspiration in becoming the woman I am today.
I implore you to reconsider your decision to release her from her position as head of Orchesis. It would be a disservice to your students to let go one of the best role models I have ever had the pleasure to be taught by. read more
