My family of 22 booked almost $1000 at the Bethel outdoor adventures in campground for a day of tubing down the river. We were greeted with a long snarl of a face in the main office and while still on the river with multiple family, waiting for us to get off the river, they were yelled at and mistreated by Erin. And when I got off, I went to retrieve my keys to leave, and I was treated as if I was a moron when I tried to explain that I just had given her a fob, not a full set of keys. She treated me like I was a two year-old idiot and was very sassy with me and again with her long snarl of a face. This is not how Customers should ever be treated and you should not be the face of this company. I highly recommend another tubing company if you visit Bethel Maine

Black Mountain of Maine is a wonderful anti-corporate answer to the "big" areas. Cozy, friendly, and beautiful runs down the mountain. A place where kids can run around without fear or the need for parental hovering. A kick-butt bar with live music. Simply, what skiing was and should be.... We got here for the first time on the Indy Pass as we have been visiting Indy areas, some of them for several years in a row. Black Mountain is a short drive away from downtown Rumford, a paper mill, quaint town of 6,000 people featuring historic homes and a working downtown. Arriving at Black Mountain, the large lodge is quite welcoming, with just about every conceivable need within the lodge. Once outside, the beginner's Novice Lift provides optimal runs for novices or warmups. The main lift, although a slow fixed triple, allows access to most of the 1,100 vertical terrain and a variety of trails. It should be said that with some effort and uphill hiking, there is another side of the mountain, glades galore, that is accessible from this area. There is yet another T-bar that provides access to even more terrain. Apres-ski, we were treated to a superb pub with great rock music, plenty of beer, and great company. Overall, the vibe in this mountain is what I remember skiing was like from my youth. Unhurried, civil, friendly, and simple. Awesome place.

So when I arrived I explained to the gentleman that I have never been skiing before and wanted to know about taking lessons, renting gear, as well as applying a military discount. Since I have never been skiiing I assumed these were the main things to do. He told me he had nothing to do with the lessons and I would have to go talk to the school, and as far as gear I would go talk to the rental place. He then proceeded to sell me ski lift tickets for each day I would be there. Mind you, knowing I have never skied before, he still chose to sell me the higher priced tickets for "all access lifts." Something I had no idea was even a thing and didn't find this out until later that day. I then proceed to the ski rental place, which was right around the corner from "Guest Services." I picked up gear for a day and a half and then proceeded to the school where they give lessons. Come to find out, if you take a lesson the school provides you with gear and a beginner ski lift pass. I signed up for their next available class which was the following morning. Then, the school said I should talk to "guest services" to see if I could switch my lift pass for the next day since the school was already giving me one. I went to "guest services" to inquire about changing the lift passes that I was sold. The woman at guest services said she could refund me as a credit or switch it to a different day. That's when I found out that I in fact had been sold the "all access" lift passes which apparently is more expensive than if I had bought a beginner pass. When I asked her why the gentleman who sold me the lift tickets didn't explain there was a difference in the lift passes nor say anything about the school possibly providing a lift pass and gear she said it wasn't their job to explain everything. She also stated if she had to explain things like that to customers then the line would be out of the door. So, even though I walked into the first building at the ski resort and went up to the desk that said "Guest Services" that still meant that I needed to get that information somewhere else? For the amount of money this place makes off of everyone that walks in those doors, the last thing they should be doing is not providing customer service when it is needed. Needless to say I didn't need the "all access" lift pass after I took a first time beginner lesson, with the gear I rented and made it on the beginner ski lift 2 times. This has really left a bad impression on me and the friends I attended with. They do have an area to keep your shoes and anything you'd like to not take with you on the snow. It is not locked up so I would keep anything of value in there. Overall, the employees handling the rental gear were all very friendly and patient. The women at the school seemed confused when I showed up with my own gear. I took a first time adult lesson with the school. The lesson was with me and 3 others with an instructor learning the basics. Since I was able to catch on fairly quick I was told to continue practicing going down the small hill by myself. I was fine doing so but after about 45mins of me doing this by myself I started questioning why I was paying for a lesson. I checked in with the instructor and she was finally able to take me on the ski lift and down the mountain. And then of course the lesson was over. In hindsight, I should have taken a private lesson and hopefully would have gotten my moneys worth. This place is pretty kid friendly. They could use more equipment stands as there were quite a few people laying their gear anywhere they could find someplace to put it. I don't plan on going back, I'd rather take my money to Loon where everyone is friendly.

Abram doesn't have the variety of terrain that its neighbor Sunday River has, but it also doesn't have the astronomical prices or crowds either. For someone who just wants to get out a few times a year and do some hot-dogging (jk!) in the crisp Maine air without breaking the bank, this is a great option, with lift tickets a max of $42/day. Note - I was glad we brought lunches because the Loose Boots Lounge was closed. It's only open for lunch Fri. - Sunday. However, looking at the menu and beer prices, I'm sorry it was closed. A Stella Artois for $5 at a ski mountain? Unheard of. So glad to have this option only an hour away :)

We were told that the trip would take 4 hours and we planned the day around that. We are not experienced kayakers but we finished in just under 2 hours.... The trip was uneventful, a leisurely float. We saw a blue heron and some geese. If you are looking to kayak in a wilderness setting, this part of the river is not for you. Nothing against the company but in 2 hours we had to dodge upwards of 100+ people floating on tubes not to mention flotillas of other kayakers and canoers. And the end of the trip we had to wait 40 min to be picked up and be brought back to were we parked and the driver was speeding and had the radio blasting--not very professional. The tandem kayak we were in was in good condition, name brand although the paddles were cheap. The star rating here is due to inconvenient transportation setup and driver professionalism (or lack thereof)

This year I was convinced to join another couple families for their yearly trip to On the Saco Campground and I'm glad I did. It's not a huge place, but it's very well kept and VERY clean. No smelly outhouses or grimy bathrooms, both were maybe a little rustic but in good working order and again, very clean. My site was tree lined giving plenty of privacy, nicely mowed and had a fire ring. I don't know if they employ some kind of mosquito management but for a wooded site about 80ft from water, I didn't get one bite over my 3 night stay. There's a little store with pretty much any essential you may have forgotten for sale, small game room, washer/dryer, and dishwashing area. You can rent tubes and canoes, (I did both) and the staff is super friendly and helpful, (especially when we got caught in the rain and they came to pick us up earlier and at a different location than intended). They had some kind of activity everyday, I saw face painting one afternoon by the office, there was a glow stick parade one night, corn-hole tournament the next, and a movie night the third. A lot of Saco campground are shitshows, (I'm talking about you Fiddlehead!) full of wasted college kids, this place IS NOT THAT. If that's what you want, keep moving. However, if you're looking for a clean, friendly place that is definitely family friendly and a more peaceful but still fun experience I'd recommend On the Saco Family Campground for sure.
